In just a few years, the pair has reversed the reputation of the conference.

“Urban and I had a pretty good conversation about this at the Big Ten meetings in Arizona. It was about how the league has changed from when he first got here to now. It’s interesting, but that’s what has made it so exciting. That’s why people are so prideful in the Big Ten and what the Big Ten is doing.”

-Penn State head coach James Franklin, via Mike Poorman, StateCollege.com

In 2011, the state of affairs in the Big Ten didn’t look so good. Ohio State was in its interim year under Luke Fickell, ultimately resulting in its first losing season since 1988. The program was recovering from scandal and working to find its way toward a long-term solution. Fortunately, that’s where Urban Meyer stepped in. In six seasons in Columbus, Meyer is 73-8 and has brought home a national championship.

Also in the Big Ten East, Penn State is experiencing a similar resurgence under James Franklin. In 2012, Penn State, deservedly, was at its lowest point as the NCAA announced some of the most severe sanctions in history against the program amid the Jerry Sandusky abuse scandal. In just three seasons, the Nittany Lions were coached by Joe Paterno, Tom Bradley and Bill O’Brien. Instability reigned. Then, James Franklin arrived from Vanderbilt.

Both Meyer and Franklin brought a higher standard to their respective programs. Franklin had built Vanderbilt, once the doormat of the SEC, into a respectable program, earning a 24-15 record in three seasons. Meyer, obviously, brought two national championships to Florida after putting Utah on the map as a contender in the west. Since Meyer joined the conference, there have been 38 different head coaches in the Big Ten. Only Iowa, Northwestern and Michigan State have been more stable over that same period.

Now, both Meyer and Franklin’s teams finished in the top-10 of the final 2017 AP Poll, and both boast top-five recruiting classes. While the Big Ten might be imbalanced in favor of the East, the pairing of the two teams gives a major boost to each’s strength of schedule. Combined with matchups against Michigan and Michigan State, a team that goes undefeated in the East (and wins the conference title game) should have a virtual lock on a College Football Playoff bid... 2017 notwithstanding.

“Once he finally found his comfort zone--after a failed experiment that had Campbell exclusively playing on the outside--he flourished last year.”

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Far and above one of the most athletic players on the Ohio State roster this year, Parris Campbell looks to be a major weapon on offense heading into 2018. After a breakout season last year, in which Campbell recorded 40 catches (including three touchdowns), Campbell is poised to be the top target of Dwayne Haskins this fall. The rising senior, widely considered the fastest player on the team, led the Buckeyes in receiving yards last year with 584. A team captain last year, Campbell also brings significant leadership to an offense which lost its on-field general in J.T. Barrett. This veteran ability will be crucial as the team works to break in a new quarterback.

Campbell’s ability to make plays stems from his pure athleticism. He is not a true receiver—which has posed problems in the past in terms of both his route running ability and his hands—but he has proven an able receiver in the slot. More than capable of making the short reception, Campbell’s legs are what truly differentiate him as he is able to escape even the most fleet-footed defenders—something which also differentiated Campbell when it came to special teams, an area where he will likely sit out this coming season.

With so many downfield options for Haskins, including Johnnie Dixon, Austin Mack and Terry McLaurin to name a few, that slot position enables the offense to further spread the field and open up the long ball. Campbell’s strength is not so much in downfield route-running as it is in finding open space from the line of scrimmage, which further opens up the field for his teammates.

Like the rest of Zone 6, Campbell opted to return for his final year of eligibility in Columbus. This decision was more significant for Campbell, who would have assuredly been a draft pick.

“Sullinger was one of the most sought-after recruits in the country, but thankfully for the Buckeyes, he went to school less than 10 miles from Ohio State’s campus and Thad Matta was able to keep him home.”

-Kevin Harrish, Eleven Warriors

Ohio State basketball recruiting has certainly taken a leap this summer as Chris Holtmann prepares to enter his second season as head coach in Columbus. With the addition of D.J. Carton, a five-star point guard from Bettendorf, Iowa, to the class of 2019, Ohio State suddenly has a top-five recruiting class nationally. Carton, the 21st-ranked player in the country, is joined by Alonzo Faggney, a forward who is listed as the No. 30 recruit in his class nationally and the best player in Ohio. The pair will provide the basis for a class that comes on the heels of a 2018 recruiting class which featured two four-star prospects.

This recruiting legacy is nothing new, however. Despite his final two, less-than-impressive seasons in Columbus, Thad Matta managed to bring in a number of the nation’s top recruits over the past decade. At the top of the list is Jared Sullinger, who came to Columbus as part of the 2010 recruiting class. Sullinger was one of two five-star recruits in his five-man class, which happened to include DeShaun Thomas and Aaron Craft. The No.4-overall player in the country, Sullinger was a McDonald’s All-American, Naismith Prep Player of the Year and the top power forward nationally. In two seasons with the Buckeyes, Sullinger earned national freshman of the year honors and was a two-time All-American before being taken with the 21st-overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics.

D’Angelo Russell, the first one-and-done player for the Buckeyes since Greg Oden and Mike Conley, came to Ohio State as the No. 16-overall player nationally in 2014. Thomas, Sullinger’s teammate, was not far behind as the nation’s 19th-ranked player in 2010. Keita Bates-Diop, who came to Ohio State with Russell in 2014, was considered the 29th-best player in the country. Finally, in between these two powerful recruiting classes, Shannon Scott emerged as the nation’s No. 35-overall player in 2011.

MotS&G Expectations VS Reality

Expectations VS Reality
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

With the 2018-2019 quickly approaching, the excitement steadily builds within the fanbase as we inch closer to opening day. As the excitement builds, the expectations become unrealistic and it could potentially depart from reality quicker than someone could conjure it up in their head.

Dreams of an undefeated season en-route to another championship is surely attainable, but it will not be an easy road. Then there is the possibility of securing the top ranking in the recruiting game. It is surely doable, but it would also be difficult to achieve. Then there is the worst kept secret with our coaching staff, namely with Coach Schiano returning after being forced out by the Tennessee fanbase.

These are all juicy subjects but let us look at the potential for the Buckeyes to go undefeated this season.

Are We Going Undefeated?

With the season coming up, we all would LOVE to see our Buckeyes go undefeated throughout the season and win the entire CFB Playoff, but as I previously stated, it will not be that easy. When going over this seasons schedule, the Buckeyes will be tested early and often right from the get-go.

First, in week 3, Ohio State will travel to Arlington, Texas to face a nasty TCU defense that will bless have a new quarterback leading the offense that will give the Silver Bullets an early test. TCU has recently come on as of late, and I am willing to bet that they are still angry at the fact that they were left out of the first CFB Playoff. This will be a measuring stick game for the Buckeyes (Haskins and offense) and for TCU as they attempt to get their signature win over a CFB Blueblood program. All eyes will be looking at this early season matchup between Top 10 teams, will the Buckeyes sink or swim out the gates?

During week 5, the Buckeyes will travel to Happy Valley for another hostile “whiteout” situation where the last time they arrived in these conditions, they fell to the home team via blocked FG that resulted in a TD. It will be another dogfight minus, Barkley and Gesicki, but Trace McSorley is a magician and he will give the defense fits with his ability to pass and run. Add the fact that this is an East Division and a rivalry game and that former Buckeye target Micah Parsons is there?! It’ll be tough sledding for sure, but hopefully, the Buckeyes can do enough to silence the crowd.

Then you have a couple of trap games lined up in consecutive weeks that could lead to trouble for the Buckeyes playoff hopes. In week 10, a home game against a Nebraska team that is now led by the former head coach of the undefeated UCF “National Championship” team.

The Buckeyes have demolished the previous two Cornhusker teams, but this year might bring a different kind of energy and focus to the game. With a seemingly rejuvenated team, with a bright young mind leading the charge, this game might be harder this year. And if some of you forgot, there was also the Tate Martell versus Tyjon Lindsey beef that might resurface.

In week 11, the Buckeyes will travel to East Lansing to face Sparty and this has the potential for another air guitar letdown for the Buckeyes. It still haunts me and hurts my soul, but it’ll be a slugfest between two Eastern Division rivals vying for a berth in the Conference Championship Game. This game will be intense.

Brian Lewerke returns as the starter, but you cannot discount the potential impact of the Spartan back-ups because they have had some success against the Buckeyes. They used DeWeaver as a runner, and I could see the same issue this year.

Then there is something called The Game, that will pit Ohio State against Michigan. I do not have to put effort into how important this game is, especially for the Buckeyes. There have been many times when either team was undefeated up until this game, then poof–dream is gone. If the Buckeyes take care of business up until this game, this game will have a lot at stake.

If they remain undefeated during the regular season and they secure the East Division berth in the Conference Championship Game, there is another obstacle in the way, the West Division representative. It will be either Wisconsin or Iowa, two teams that always remain in the way of Ohio State related goals. Last year it was Iowa’s demolishing of the Buckeyes at home that ousted the Buckeyes playoff hopes and Wisconsin always finds a way to do the same in the postseason.

So, to be clear, I am not assuming that they will remain undefeated and that they will breeze by opponents because what’s not to say that another Iowa game happens. It won’t be an easy season, but I have enough faith in the team that they will not disappoint.

Injury-after-injury has kept the former second-round pick from finding his spot on the NFL roster.

Expectations were high for wideout Devin Smith in 2015 when he was drafted to the New York Jets out of Ohio State, but the Buckeyes’ go-to deep-threat couldn’t stay healthy enough to contribute at the next level. Just as teams are getting ready for training camp, the Jets decided to release their former second-round pick, according to Adam Schefter.

Jets are releasing former 2015 second-round pick Devin Smith, per source. Smith suffered two torn ACLs and has struggled to recover from them.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 16, 2018

Smith was taken at No. 37 overall by the Jets after winning the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship with the Buckeyes. He earned playing time in 10 games during his rookie season, starting three, and nabbing nine receptions on 28 targets for 115 yards and one score.

The wide receiver’s NFL career started off rocky, with a rib injury just ahead of the regular season causing some concern. He didn’t let it slow him down for the first four weeks of the season, but in Week 8 Smith suffered an ankle injury, followed by a foot injury in Weeks 9 and 12. In Week 15 he was down for good with an torn ACL.

Smith would go on to spend the majority of the 2016 season on the Physically Unable to Perform List as he recovered from his various injuries. He was activated in November, but only saw three targets in the final four games of the season.

Things didn’t go any smoother for the Buckeye as he prepared for the offseason, with Smith suffering his second torn ACL in April 2017, knocking him out for his entire third NFL season.

This marks the first time in Smith’s young career that he’s been a free agent and will get a sense of whether or not teams are willing to take a chance on him given his injury history.

With teams heading into training camp this week through the end of the month, there isn’t a ton of time left to find a team willing to take the gamble and do enough during camp to solidify a spot on the final 53-man roster.

Here’s hoping the Buckeye hasn’t seen his last NFL snap at such a young age.

The Buckeyes basketball program got a whole lot stronger over the weekend.

While you were out enjoying the weekend, you might’ve missed out on your Ohio State recruiting fix.

OSU lands 5-star point guard

As you may know, Ohio State isn’t just a football school.

Already holding a verbal commitment from four-star Cleveland Heights forward Alonzo Gaffney, Chris Holtmann and the basketball Buckeyes were off to a decent start to their 2019 recruiting class. Now thanks to the weekend commitment of five-star point guard DJ Carton, Ohio State is mentioned among some of the best in the country.

B U C K E Y E N A T I O N⚪pic.twitter.com/A8T26fA7W1

— DJ Carton (@DJCarton) July 14, 2018

With at least one scholarship on the table and Carton, a Bettendorf, Iowa native now in the fold, the Buckeyes are sitting as the fourth rated 2019 recruiting class at the moment.

A top 25 recruit, Carton should add a lot to the Buckeyes on offense and defense once he arrives in Columbus. A scoring threat, and a decent facilitator of the ball, he also isn’t afraid to guard other top notch players when he isn’t trying to lead his team to points.

Averaging 23 points, five rebounds, and three assists a contest, Ohio State isn’t the only program to take a look at Carton, who reportedly sports a near 40-inch vertical. locking in well over a dozen offers, the Buckeyes beat out the likes of Big Ten foes Indiana and Michigan for his services.

Want to know more about the newest Buckeye basketball pledge DJ Carton and what he’ll add to Holtmann’s squad? Land-Grant Holy Land’s Patrick Mayhorn has you covered.

Washington drops top 10

When a highly sought after high school prospect releases his top college list chances are Ohio State might make the cut.

In what is now becoming a near everyday event for the Buckeyes, four-star safety Bryson Washington took to his Twitter page on Saturday to let the world know that he’s taking a good hard look at 10 programs.

Although things could change in the coming months, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU, Georgia, Florida State, Oregon, and UCLA are currently on top for the 6-foot-2, 196-pound class of 2020 standout.

Truly Thankful For The Opportunity ‼️ pic.twitter.com/Aytcvy7Bij

— Bryson Washington (@ChasingDream8) July 13, 2018

As a sophomore at C.E. King in Houston, Washington, the second safety, and 87th overall junior prospect in the country, per the 247Sports Composite, showed on the field why so many college coaches are trying to add him to their future rosters.

An All-State selection, he finished his season off with 56 total tackles, and five interceptions for the Panthers.
