What a bitch.Daniels sends cease and desist to LSU after Pickett given No. 5
An attorney representing Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has informed LSU that it can no longer use his name, image and likeness, according to an Aug. 5 letter sent to Tigers athletic director Verge Ausberry, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN on Wednesday.
At the center of the dispute, according to a statement from Daniels' spokesperson to ESPN, is that the Tigers are allowing sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett to wear the No. 5 jersey that Daniels wore when he became LSU's third Heisman Trophy winner in 2023.
While Daniels' jersey hasn't been retired by the Tigers, it's the first time a player has worn No. 5 since he left the program for the NFL.
"The Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected by LSU's decision to give Jayden's number to another player," the statement from Daniels' spokesperson said. "Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honored and protected in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university."
Pickett was wearing the No. 5 jersey when the Tigers opened preseason practice last week, leading to questions about why first-year LSU coach Lane Kiffin had allowed the jersey swap to happen.
"Jayden made it clear that he did not want his number given to another player, and he believed his wishes would be respected," the statement said. "His Heisman Trophy-winning season and everything he accomplished on and off the field cemented his place in LSU history. To see his number given to another player is incredibly disappointing and feels like a failure to honor the significance of what Jayden accomplished at LSU."

Kiffin told reporters on Aug. 5 that Pickett had been promised he could wear No. 5 when he signed with the Tigers in December 2024. Pickett had worn that number as a high school star in Zephyrhills, Florida, where he was the No. 2 cornerback in the Class of 2025 by ESPN Recruiting.

However, LSU's current policy regarding jerseys being retired, which is published on its athletic department website, states that any number retired after Jan. 1, 2007, "does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach."

Brian Hartline did Ohio State one last big favor before leaving, and that was bringing in the class of 2026 to Columbus, headlined by 5-star wide receiver Chris Henry Jr. Henry isn’t the only freshman catching attention during fall camp, though. Back in the spring, it was Brock Boyd, the former 3-star recruit from Texas, who was the most talked-about freshman because of how quickly he hit the ground running in Columbus, andit’s still the caseSenior cornerback Jermaine Mathews Jr. was asked about Boyd on Thursday, and he didn’t hold back.
“Brock is just, shi*, Brock is different,” Mathews stated on Thursday. “I don’t know, It’s something about Brock. He’s different, I love Brock.
When it comes to the freshman class as a whole, Mathews is very high on them.
“I really like all the receivers. The freshmen, they’re probably the best freshman players I’ve ever seen. Freshman, they are nice. Receivers are always going to be receivers here. I’ve done seen a lot of them coming through here. I think they just give us work every day. They’re just special,” Mathews added.
Brock Boyd’s role could be there Day 1
Boyd is a 6-foot-1, 196-pound receiver who is going to play for the Buckeyes this year, likely out of the slot. Even if it starts as a depth role, he’s going to get on the field. He’s made that much clear already early in his Ohio State tenure. Despite not being a coveted recruit, Hartline pushed to flip him from his commitment to TCU, and we’re seeing why now.Henry, Boyd, and fellow freshman Jerquaeden Guilford are all going to be a huge part of Ohio State’s receiver room going forward. If it’s not this year, then next year. Hartline went out with a strong final class in Columbus, and Boyd wasn’t a headliner name coming in. His teammates are speaking out about him now, though, and that’s worth paying attention to.

"Consistency is one of the six criteria, and it's proving to become more and more important because injuries are having some sort of a force multiplier effect in the era of the NIL and the portal. We can't fully put our fingers on them, but we are watching that when one player goes down, it's a 2x reduction in production for a week or two longer than it's been historically.
"So the dip is further, faster, and it takes longer to climb out of it, and I think we saw that a season ago with Ohio State, maybe even the last couple seasons, but certainly with Texas, Ohio State, Oregon, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, all of them. All of those units had a single player go down that, when they had to shuffle the deck, was problematic. Indiana, for a couple of games, had that situation happen last year, so, as having challenges and question marks, I think Ohio State's way ahead of the pack compared to some of the other national contenders."
Padilla, who could play all along the interior, guard Gabe VanSickle, and even true freshman tackle Sam Greer could see snaps in the rotation behind, from left to right: Moore, Luke Montgomery, Carson Hinzman, Siereveld, and Phillip Daniels. Taylor's confidence in the entire group is notable, since chemistry up front defines any offense's ceiling.
With the margins so thin at the top of the sport, it's music to Buckeye fans' ears that a trenches expert like Taylor believes the offensive line is in such good shape relative to the other teams in the CFP mix.
