Yeah, that's the play. The firing was entirely justified and should be an easy W for the school. The school, however, absolutely doesn't want either discovery or Partridge spilling the truth. He'll get a nice check in exchange for an NDA.
That ending sequence is why I still question Diebler's x's and o's coaching ability. It's been a good run but we have got to get a lot better at these pressure end of game situations.
