Ohio State has a rich tradition of great receivers, but one of their best in the NFL today thinks Smith is on another level
There are few college football programs that boast a better lineage of wide receiver talent than Ohio State, but current star receiver Jeremiah Smith has a case to be above them all.
Smith has already set a new school record for all-time receiving yards in 33 games and is rapidly approaching the all-time Big Ten record. Smith doesn't just have the statistical profile worthy of that title, he clears the eye test for anyone that watches him, as the way he moves, his strength and speed and the quality of his route running jumps off the tape.
While it's easy to wonder if the Smith hype is recency bias, all you have to do is ask one of the best Buckeyes in the NFL today about Smith to know it's not just bluster from fans and the media.
Former Ohio State standout Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, joined Kyle Long and Russell Wilson on Set, Hut! this week and said even when factoring in all the great receiving talent that's passed through Columbus, Smith is something the Buckeyes have never seen before -- and compared him to LeBron James.

"We've seen great talents coming through Ohio State — you know the Chris Olaves, the Cris Carters, the Garrett Wilsons — but we really haven't seen a guy like Jeremiah Smith come out of Ohio State," Smith-Njigba said. "The expectation — we're all looking forward to [him coming to the NFL]. He's like the LeBron James so to speak and the pressure's on him, but he seems to respond to it week after week and handle it with class and maturity. I think any team that wants to go forward and build and create something special I definitely think he's your guy to get. He's been putting on for us. He likes to say we're Wide Receiver U and I think he's definitely gonna stamp that."

Last weekend, Colin Simmons and Raleek Brown drew significant attention to themselves and the Texas football program, with the bad press outweighing the good. Athletic director Chris Del Conte is adamant that players only cast the university in a positive light moving forward.In the first half of No. 1 Texas' win over Tennessee, Simmons got to Volunteers quarterback Faizon Brandon for one of the program's record 5.5 sacks before pretending to urinate on the field. Not only did that draw a flag, but it drew plenty of negative press over the next few days.
Later in the game, after his fourth-quarter touchdown run, Brown pretended to wipe his groin before bringing it to his face and falling backward. Fortunately for the Horns, that celebration was not flagged, but it did get noticed by everyone watching at home.
In his weekly Forty Acres Insider newsletter, Del Conte didn't mince words when condemning the vulgar celebrations.
"I'm not happy about that," Del Conte wrote. "I know none of us are, and it was embarrassing to our proud and widely respected football team, athletics program and university. It certainly raised very warranted concerns that many of you shared with me, drew a lot of attention, and I understand why."
Del Conte added that such actions will not be tolerated by the football program or the university, and he also supported Steve Sarkisian's strong stance against them.
"As he said, it is unacceptable and will not be tolerated," Del Conte wrote. "The message is clear -- the players' conduct did not reflect the values of Texas Athletics or our university and cannot happen again."

Ted Ginn Jr.'s Ohio State highlights look amazing in every era.
If you haven't rewatched them recently or are simply too much of a whippersnapper to have been born in time to enjoy his college years, we're talking about a guy with uncommon gait and acceleration. The highlights remain, but the details and context fade with every passing decade.
There was no one like Teddy on the roster before, during or after his arrival. He went on to a 14-year NFL career, but while Ohio State had him, it wasn't uncommon to hear - through gritted teeth - the only person on earth who can stop Ted Ginn Jr. is Jim Tressel.
He debuted during the solitary down year of the Tressel Era, which is where that frustration first manifested. Santonio Holmes and Roy Hall were atop the depth chart with Bam Childress and Anthony Gonzalez trying to work their ways in, while Ginn was a freshman DB/WR trying to get onto the field. By the end of that season he was must-see television.
BACK IN 2004, AT FIRST TED GINN WASN'T ALLOWED TO DO ANYTHIN' - BUT THEN HE DID EVERYTHIN'
The 2004 Buckeyes were resetting themselves, with Craig Krenzel, Michael Jenkins, Will Smith and Darion Scott among the departed legends from Tressel's opening run. Why wasn't a 5-star speed demon getting more opportunities to make an immediate impact for a team that needed an immediate impact?
The familiar answer: He was a freshman who had not yet earned the right to be trusted. Maurice Hall (basically, Master Teague before Master Teague was Master Teague) was returning kickoffs. Tressel trusted him. Holmes was trusted as well, and he returned punts that season - including a 63-yard TD in the Northwestern disaster.
Teddy was electric, and yet he didn't get his first punt return until that fourth game. He took it 12 yards, which is higher than the average from every season of the Ryan Day Era. A week later against Wisconsin, he took the first punt he saw to the house.
Caleb Downs owns the sole punt return touchdown since Urban Meyer's retirement. Ginn, as a true freshman, had four that season. In East Lansing, he scored on a handoff, a reception and a punt ret- you know what, it's all here..........................
This really doesn't have to be a four-quarter game. And if the defense finds any juice, it won't be.
