College Baseball/Softball News, Notes, Awards (Official Thread)

Texas Tech was leading Texas 1-0 in the 6th inning yesterday in Game 1 of the Women’s Softball Final Series.

Texas had runners on first and third with 2 outs and Atwood, their best hitter up. Tech’s pitcher Canady, an All-American, is told to walk the batter after the runner on first stole second. She throws intentional balls above the strike zone instead of outside the batter’s box. On the 3-0 pitch, it wasn’t high enough (shoulder high at most) and Atwood stroked a line drive into left field to make it 2-1 Texas, which was the final score.

Tech manager, should you maybe have instructed that intentional walk to be outside the batter’s box? It might cost you a Natty.

People to Punch, Pet Peeves, and General Vexations (mega-merge)

Here's another one that is probably unreasonable: people who think they're being smart by scheduling something to be at "3:00 EST". The EST stands for Eastern Standard Time, as opposed to Eastern Daylight Saving Time (EDT). If you schedule something for 3:00 EST in June, I have to do the whole "spring forward / fall back" thing and figure out if you're talking about 2:00 EDT or 4:00 EDT. (Spoiler alert: 3:00 EST = 4:00 EDT). Then I need to try to guess if you're a doofus and didn't know that we're in daylight saving time now, or not. Then I need to figure out if I'm zurping this way out of proportion. Then after a couple minutes of wondering if I need to make a post on Buckeyeplanet about it, I usually just forget it and write it down as me being a big nerd and say it's for 3:00 EDT.
I often edit thread titles from ‘EST’ to ‘ET’ in an attempt to avoid confusion.

2025 scUM Shenanigans, Arguments - NCAA: no wins taken away, no postseason ban

Perhaps this will increase everyone's thirst for Maize and Blue blood:

From the SI article:
”Any vacation of records from Michigan’s undefeated 2023 national championship season. In the future, NCAA record books may not say the Wolverines went 15–0.”

Folks, the records from 2021 and 2022 should also be changed to forfeits, vacations, or no contests.

Acting like only 2023 is involved shows a total lack of understanding by Pat Forde. Why am I not surprised?

2025 CFP National Championship Presented by AT&T- Ohio State v Notre Dame

The Buckeyes will once again be deep at wide receiver this season.

Ohio State has a long history of developing great wide receiver talent. Buckeyes offensive coordinator Brian Hartline is one of those receivers.

In recent years, the Buckeyes have recruited and developed receivers that include Curtis Samuel, Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka, among others.

Heading into the 2025 campaign, Jeremiah Smith is the Buckeyes’ headliner at wide receiver. All of the attention from opposing cornerbacks will be focused on him, and that will open the door for Carnell Tate to take another huge leap this season.

Tate is an easy player to root for. He’s got a good head on his shoulders and works hard at his craft. After catching just 18 passes in his first season with the Buckeyes in 2023, Tate nearly tripled that number in 2024 with 52 receptions for 733 yards and four touchdowns.

With Egbuka now in the NFL, drafted 19th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tate is poised to have a larger role in the Buckeyes’ receiver room and passing game.

A former four-star prospect from Chicago, Tate was Ohio State’s leading receiver in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic with eight receptions for 87 yards. He added two catches for 35 yards against Notre Dame in the CFP National Championship. Not to mention, Tate had his first multi-touchdown game against Northwestern at Wrigley Field last season, a homecoming game for the two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.

Tate has shown he’s not afraid of the moment in big games. That will help Julian Sayin develop into the Buckeyes offense the same way that Will Howard and Kyle McCord did in each of the last two seasons.

Even though the 2026 NFL Draft is still nearly 11 months away, it’s worth mentioning that Pro Football Focus has Tate at No. 41 on their 2026 Big Board. Tate is the No. 6 receiver on the board according to PFF for next year’s draft.

Tate is going to be Ohio State’s WR2 this season, and the Buckeyes should once again be a prolific passing offense in 2025. His numbers could take a huge uptick again this season, which could shoot his draft stock way up and put Tate potentially in the conversation for some yearly awards nationally.

This is an emerging star at wide receiver for the Buckeyes. Tate is well positioned to take another step, another leap this season. Smith will garner most of the attention, but that will give Tate plenty of opportunities to make plays. A 1,000-yard season is not out of the question, and his stats beyond that could stack up among the best in the country.

Tate will be a really fun player to watch on the Buckeyes in 2025.

Better Know A Buckeye is our look at every member of Ohio State’s 2025 recruiting class and how they became Buckeyes as they prepare to begin their OSU careers this fall.
DePaul Catholic High School (Wayne, New Jersey) safety Deshawn Stewart had long been familiar with the prestige of the Ohio State football program, dating back to when he watched the Buckeyes win the 2014 national championship, to be exact.
While he wasn't necessarily a lifelong OSU fan, the four-star prospect in the 2025 class always had plenty of praise for Ohio State, especially considering former Buckeye safety Ronnie Hickman went to the same high school as Stewart.

How He Became a Buckeye

Once Stewart received an OSU offer on Jan. 19, 2024, the Buckeyes instantly became one of his top schools. The safety included Ohio State in his top three 10 days after that offer.
“It means everything to me,” Stewart told Eleven Warriors of receiving the offer. “Watching them growing up, you see all the great players come out of there. The offer means a whole lot.”
Two of the biggest reasons for that were the Brotherhood and Buckeye Nation.
“Playing in front of all their fans,” Stewart said when talking about the most appealing thing about potentially playing for OSU. “Coach Day showed me they have the best fanbase in college football. The second college next to them is like (five million fans) behind. So that’s pretty crazy to play in front of all those people. And the brotherhood that they share.”
After a visit to Columbus on March 31, 2024, Stewart fell in love with the campus and coaching staff at Ohio State. Eight days later and six weeks after receiving that coveted offer, Stewart committed to Ohio State, one day after high school teammate De'zie Jones did the same, a weekend that included four 2025 prospects committing to the Buckeyes.
“When he did it, I knew there was no other place we could be,” Stewart said. “This is the place."
Stewart was the 11th overall commitment in the cycle and the first safety to pledge to OSU in the 2025 class.

'25 OH SG Dorian Jones (Rutgers Verbal)

Well it seems like this ship has sailed. I doubt Jones will ever enroll at OSU now that he has reopened his recruitment due to academics. Some have said it could be a 1-year prep school thing & he could try and come back to OSU, but college teams generally aren't gonna just hold a scholarship open for a kid in the hopes that he will academically qualify eventually.

QB1 Will Howard (National Champion, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Caught a quick listen to a snip from Zach Smith who said that it’s sounding like Will is balling out in OTAs. Stoked to hear that. Hope he keeps it going like that.
As a Browns fan, this pisses me off. Those fuckers find a way to win with Kenny Pickett. They find a way to make Russell Wilson look good, again. They find a way to turn a blocked field goal into a made field goal (that one goes back to 2002).
The Browns get Johnny Manziel. They find a way to get rid of Baker Mayfield and turn an all-pro quarterback into a Browns quarterback. I've got to look forward to Deion Jr and Dillon Gabriel.
Seriously, though, I'll probably always like Howard. I hope he does well, but finds a way to win with another team, somehow.
