2025 tOSU Defense Discussion

Ohio State Buckeyes DC Matt Patricia planning on replicating key Jim Knowles decision

Ohio State Buckeyes defensive coordinator Matt Patricia may be taking a page out of his predecessor's playbook this season as it pertains to unleashing his linebackers.

Cleveland.com's Stefan Krajisnik predicts Patricia will unleash Payton Pierce next to Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese in a way reminiscent of what Jim Knowles deployed during the Buckeyes' run to the College Football Playoff National Championship.

"While their statures are different, Pierce could be the key to unlocking what Reese and Styles do as Ohio State’s starting linebackers this season," Krajisnik wrote.

"The Buckeyes unleashed their linebackers last year following a troublesome performance in a mid-October loss at Oregon. Ohio State started using Cody Simon and Styles to create havoc in the backfield, made evident by their four combined sacks in the College Football Playoff.

"Patricia might do the same with Styles and Reese this season. Having Pierce on the roster as a trusted third linebacker — who might be the surest tackler of the bunch — helps make it possible."

Patricia may as well borrow as much from Knowles as he could. He'll be under Knowles' shadow after the championship-caliber defensive coordinator took his talents to State College to coach the Penn State Nittany Lions, anyway.

2026 AZ OL Aaron Thomas is a Buckeye!!!

Ohio State football commit shoots down rumors he might flip to the ACC

Thankfully, it looks like the Buckeyes are going to hang on.

Oh, how quickly things can change when it comes to recruiting. Earlier this week, the word around Ohio State football circles was that it was time to start worrying about offensive tackle commit Aaron Thomas. Could he have one foot out the door?

A report surfaced stating that Thomas was planning to visit Florida State, where his father played, for the home game against Miami. As soon as that update arrived, the belief was that maybe, just maybe Thomas would decide to flip from the Buckeyes to FSU in order to play for his dad's old squad.

Nope, that's not going to happen. Shortly after people were losing their minds on Twitter, Thomas posted on social media to let the Ohio State faithful know there's nothing to see here. He's fully locked in with Ohio State and he'll be making things official with the program during the Early Signing Period:

Ohio State OT commit Aaron Thomas is 100 percent locked in with Ryan Day

That's a relief. For a second there, it truly did seem like Thomas was going to give Mike Norvell and the Seminoles a closer look. Again, though, that won't be the case. Thomas committed to Ohio State back on June 25, doing so over more than 20 other programs. He's picked up 29 tenders this cycle.

2025 Fall Camp and Other Tidbits

Watched the B10 show at tOSU for spring practice last evening. Saw the usual platitudes from Dinardo etc, and watched Jake Butts, he of Pickerington and Xichigan fame (?). Impressed by the young man, as he threw out some positive things about the Buckeyes, and not once did he toss any grenades about recent Xichigan success. The big take-away, to me at least, was that the three OL position coaches are having a very positive impact on the OL play this year. Happy to hear that. Though was sad to see the camera was focused on Sayin and Keinholtz, and nary a shot of Tavian....Also liked to hear the B10 announcers that noticed the intensity of practice this early in the year. Go Bucks!
I reluctantly also agree about Jake. And, my reluctance is based entirely on a bad decision he made with his choice of college. He seems to take his new career seriously and wants to do a good job as an analyst, vs. simply stoking flames or whatever the hell it is they prefer their "talent" do over at ESPN.

He followed that touchdown up with an 18-yard run as well as three catches for 12 yards later in the first quarter.

Cleveland Browns (Factory of Sadness)

He gave a nice interview too, sounded nothing like his overly brash dad. I think if there wasn’t the history and his name wasn’t Sanders, he’d be easier to root for, but he seems to have the right attitude out there. He earned more opportunities tonight, I hope he at least gets what he’s earned.
