Wednesday was a jam-packed day for Ohio State’s staff on the recruiting trail.

Ohio State is a little behind on the recruiting front when it comes to making their rounds as a result of winning a national title and playing into late January. Focused for the last two months on game prep, the Buckeyes had their staffers doing their part in making visits and dishing out new offers. The coaches obviously had bigger priorities to take care of, and a job well done allowed them to hoist college football’s ultimate prize.

The offseason now under way, Ryan Day has no shortage of moves to make when it comes to rounding out his coaching staff, but this week has seen the current coaches all over the country making up for lost time on the recruiting trail.

Ohio State dishes out a trio of new offers

It’s never been that hard to sell Ohio State’s brand when it comes to recruiting, but the stock is at an all-time high right now, and that should pay off for the Buckeyes in terms of reloading with top talent. Whether it be the up and coming 2026 class or even in the transfer portal, Ohio State should be able to have their way more times than not.

With multiple offers going out on Wednesday, it’s time to see how much more clout Ohio State has with their ninth championship under their belt.

All over the state of Georgia, the ball gets rolling with three-star prospect Brayden Rouse. A 6-foot-3, 210 pound athlete, Rouse is currently the No. 378 player nationally and the 30th best linebacker in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite.

With offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas, and a ton of others already in the fold, it’s no shock to see Ohio State also throw their name into the mix now. A class that is sure to take at least two and likely three linebackers in total, the Buckeyes have in-state targets Cincere Johnson and Storm Miller very much atop of the priority list, but having other options doesn’t hurt.

AG2G!! Thank you to my teammates, coaches, and family for helping me earn an offer from THE Ohio State University!@JLaurinaitis55 @jchorba16 pic.twitter.com/Tj0GMP7pM3

The Buckeyes also took time on Wednesday to reach out to Illinois product Brock Williams by way of an offer being extended. Now his nearly 20th offer to his name, Ohio State joins the likes of Arizona State, Auburn, Michigan, Missouri, Penn State, and Wisconsin among others for what looks to be another one of the better tight end targets out of the Midwest region.

A class of 2027 athlete, Williams is not yet ranked by 247Sports, but his impressive offer list and a 6-foot-5, 210 pound frame certainly bodes well for his status moving forward and should only bring more attention to his recruitment.

Ohio State has one of the deeper tight end rooms in the country for the upcoming 2025 campaign, and continued development by position coach Keenan Bailey will only keep getting better. Recruits are taking notice of Ohio State’s tight end room, and the Buckeyes are always looking for who could be next to continue the track record of successful play.

One more for good measure, Ohio State’s offer to a Texas five-star receiver target seems right on brand. Extending the good news to Ethan Feaster, the Buckeyes aren’t exactly late to the party, with Feaster being a 2027 prospect, but now have officially entered the recruitment for the No. t player nationally and top overall receiver in the class per the 247Sports Composite.

A 6-foot-1, 175 pound athlete with every major offer already under his belt, the Buckeyes don’t need to do much more than tout Brian Hartline and his incredible track record of developing his players. The success of freshman phenom Jeremiah Smith doesn’t hurt either, as his example of early playing time is likely what Feaster has goals of as the top-ranked player at his position.

Ohio State for some time was landing the top receiver in the country seemingly in every recruiting class, and would love to continue that trend in 2027 as well, knowing in 2026 they’re on track yet again thanks to Chris Henry Jr.

Hartline tends to get who he wants, and this name is definitely one worth watching for the long haul now that the offer has been extended.

Buckeye coaches checking in with many of their top targets

Making their rounds in droves on Wednesday, it’s not possible to be any more busy that Ryan Day is, but it seems to be working out just fine as the Buckeyes are the talk of college football. Making stops to see the top guys on their recruiting boards, yesterday alone saw several visits worth mentioning as priority recruits.

  • Tyler Atkinson — The No. 10 player nationally and top ranked linebacker in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite, there’s not a player Laurinaitis would love more than Atkinson in addition to the in-state linebacker targets. Seeing three coaches on Ohio State’s staff making the trek to see him, it’s clear to see how highly they think of the Georgia native, and surely their presence shows Atkinson how high on their list he is.
  • Jared Curtis — The No. 4 player nationally and second best quarterback in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite, Ohio State made sure to check in with Curtis as they continue their search to land the quarterback leader of their 2026 class. Already set in 2025 and in 2027, the in-between cycle has options, but Curtis is the top-ranked player left on the board at his position.

A one-time Georgia commit, the Bulldogs may be the leader still, but Ohio State is hanging around and has the best QB developer in the country thanks to Day. In other words, never count out Ohio State when it comes to the quarterback position.

  • Bryce Perry-Wright — The No. 45 player nationally and second best defensive lineman per the 247Sports Composite in the 2026 class, Ohio State once again sent multiple coaches on this assignment knowing full well how major of an addition Perry-Wright would bring to Ohio State’s current cycle. Coach Day, Larry Johnson, and Tim Walton all in to see the coveted four-star, the Buckeyes weren’t the only program to come along, as other major suitors such as Miami were also in attendance.

The Buckeyes had the most dominant defensive line down the stretch, and it wouldn’t take long for Bryce to see another fellow Georgia product in Eddrick Houston playing a major role in just his first season at Ohio State. That alone has to stand out in favor of the Buckeyes.

Looking to get back to .500 in conference play after two consecutive wins, the Buckeyes head to Penn State to face the Nittany Lions.

Looking to continue their recent momentum and get back to .500 in Big Ten play, Ohio State (12-8, 4-5 B1G) kicks off a two-game road trip tonight against Penn State (13-8, 3-7 B1G). The Buckeyes are on a two-game win streak as they head into Thursday’s matchup.

The Nittany Lions, for their part, are hoping to snap a two-game skid. Still, both games were close losses (76-75 against Iowa, 76-72 against Michigan) in a narrative that should sound familiar to Buckeye fans, who watched their own team drop three consecutive games by two points or fewer earlier this month.

Last season, the teams split their meetings, with the Nittany Lions erasing an 18-point deficit to win, 83-80, in the first game. The two teams last met on Jan. 20, 2024, in a 12-point win for the Buckeyes — one of the team’s two wins in a rough January. It was also one of the team’s final victories under head coach Chris Holtman before his midseason firing, making way for current head coach Jake Diebler to step into the role late last season.

The game marks a bit of a homecoming for Ohio State assistant coach Talor Battle, who played for Penn State from 2007-11 and is the Nittany Lions’ all-time leading scorer. OSU junior guard Evan Mahaffey is also a transfer out of Penn State, who put up a career-high six assists in the first game against his former team last season, and a career-high 16 points in the second meeting, helping propel the Buckeyes to victory.

After losing three consecutive games by a combined total of just five points, Ohio State managed to turn things around with a 73-70 road win over then-No. 11 Purdue, an exciting upset for a Buckeye team that had fallen just short against then-No. 15 Oregon and then-No. 24 Wisconsin.

Ohio State followed that road win at Purdue — their first in West Lafayette since 2018 — with an 82-65 win over Iowa earlier this week in Columbus, snapping the Buckeyes’ three-game home skid.

Against the Hawkeyes, the Buckeyes managed to contain Iowa’s typically explosive offense, holding them to just 39.3 percent shooting and a season-low 65 points in OSU’s first comfortable win since they played Indiana State at the end of December. Heading into the game, Iowa had the highest-scoring offense in the Big Ten — the fourth-best in the country — averaging 86.8 points per game.

Both teams struggled to knock down shots in the first half. They shot a combined 37.5 percent overall before the break, though the Buckeyes took a 30-26 advantage into halftime. OSU found its fire during the break though, opening the second half with an 11-1 run and extending their lead to as much as 20 points.

Micah Parrish led for the Buckeyes with 18 points, 11 of which came in the Buckeyes’ dominant second half, along with six rebounds. Bruce Thornton added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. were each good for 12 points, plus eight rebounds for Royal and eight assists for Mobley.

In addition to Thornton’s team-leading 17 points per game, Royal, Mobley and Parrish all have scoring averages in double-digits (13.8 ppg, 12.3 ppg, and 11.5 ppg respectively). Royal leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game.

On the other side, the Nittany Lions started the season hot, carrying a 12-2 record into the first week of January. But they followed a tough loss to Indiana with three consecutive games against ranked opponents, and they’ve dropped six of their last seven. Their lone win since Jan. 5 came against a 10-10 Rutgers team.

In their last outing on the road in Ann Arbor, Penn State led Michigan, 70-67, with under four minutes remaining in the game, but the Nittany Lions missed their last four shots, while the Wolverines went on a 9-0 run to edge Penn State, 76-72.

The Nittany Lions now sit near the bottom of the Big Ten standings. They return home, hoping the friendly environment will help them snap their current two-game losing streak.

Six players for the Nittany Lions are averaging in double-digit scoring this season. They are led by guard Ace Baldwin Jr., with 14.3 points. Baldwin’s team-leading 7.9 assists per game puts him at fourth in the nation. He is followed by Nick Kern Jr. with 13.0 points per game and forward Yanic Konan Niederhauser with 12.3 ppg and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game.

Zach Hicks, Puff Johnson and Freddie Dilione V are averaging 11.7, 10.2 and 10.1 points per game, respectively.

Penn State has the 20th-best scoring offense in the country, averaging 83.2 points per game and scoring 80-or-more in 14 games this season.

NCAA Basketball: Penn State at Michigan
Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

OSU and Penn State match up fairly evenly this year, though one intangible the Buckeyes should be aware of is that the Nits have been overdue for a win in much the same way Ohio State had been, heading into their victory at Purdue.

Still, while Penn State’s offense is steady and consistent, the Buckeyes got it done against an even better Iowa offense, albeit in a more friendly environment. The Nittany Lions won’t make it easy, though — they’re 11-1 at home. Ohio State will have to continue its recent momentum and shut down Penn State’s offense if they want to secure this win.

The Buckeyes will also need to hold onto the ball. Royal in particular has struggled with turnovers of late (he had two quick ones in the first half against Iowa, among other recent slip-ups), and the Nits are quick to capitalize, turning these defensive opportunities into offensive success. They are forcing 15.5 turnovers per game, putting them in the top 25 in the nation.

If Ohio State can prevent sloppy errors and shut down Penn State’s defense, it bodes well for the Buckeyes, though this will likely be a tight one that plays out in the final few minutes.

At this point in the season, every game is a must-win if you want to dance in March. For the Buckeyes in particular, this game is followed by a tough road game at No. 18 Illinois, making the stakes even higher in State College.

But truthfully, both of these teams have a lot riding on this matchup as Selection Sunday continues to creep closer and they attempt to course-correct after some setbacks, so don’t expect either of them to go down without a fight. All signs point to a thriller in State College.

A plane crash

Horrible news tonight with an American Airlines regional jet colliding with a helicopter just before landing. The jet lands in the river and likely many fatalities. I don't know how to fly but I've always been curious about airplanes and the reasons they crash. I've watched about every video on YouTube from Flight Channel detailing every crash. I remember in the 1980s there would be 4-5 crashes per year in the USA alone. Since 9/11, there have only been 3 major airline crashes until tonight.

A month after 9/11, a large airliner from NYC heading to the Caribbean crashed, raising fears of a terrorist attack. Nope, the co-pilot was poorly trained and made aggressive maneuvers to get out of wake turbulence, causing the rudder to snap off.

Then in Lexington KY, the crew took off from the wrong runway which was much shorter. It wasn't even lit causing the pilot to comment seconds before his death, "This is weird with no lights." He didn't abort, and every passenger died.

Then the final crash until tonight, in Buffalo NY, a poorly trained pilot and tired co-pilot crashed a Comair jet short of the runway when they were not watching the speed and it stalled and went out of control.

And now tonight. For the last few years, the FAA has mentioned near misses due to airport congestion and I always thought it was alarmist. But I guess I was wrong. This crash is the result of a collision between an airliner and a military helicopter close to a major airport. Who will be to blame?
