Ohio State’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in three years is within reach with five weeks to go.

Ohio State’s NCAA Tournament hopes were on the operating table two weeks ago, in need of emergency resuscitation after a 77-76 home loss to Indiana dropped them to 10-8 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten. With Mackey Arena staring them in the face, things looked grim.

Since then, the Buckeyes have won three in a row and are back to an even 5-5 in Big Ten play. They’ll head to Illinois next, where they’ll try to improve their 3-3 road record this season and pick up their fifth Quad-1 win of the season. Regardless of the result on Sunday, KenPom currently gives Ohio State better than a 50% chance to win eight of their final 10 games.

Most websites and NCAA Tournament models are projecting Ohio State to be either a 10 or 11-seed at the moment, often times slotting them into the First Four in Dayton. If that happened, it would be the first time that Ohio State started the NCAA Tournament in Dayton since the field expanded from 64 to 68 teams in 2011.

Ohio State’s resume is heavily weighted by wins over Kentucky and Purdue, and benefits from the fact that it has no bad losses so far. The Buckeyes’ two Quad-2 losses to Pittsburgh and Indiana have come by a combined two points. The loss to Pitt was a Quad-1 loss in November, but the Panthers have gone 7-5 since then and have slid to 34 in the NET.

Jake Diebler’s team is currently 28 in the NET. Ohio State is the only team in the top-40 with more than seven losses.

Here’s what 15 bracketologists have the Buckeyes sitting as of January 30th. Many of these sites have not updated their predictions since last night’s 83-64 win over Penn State, so some may move Ohio State up a line when they release updates.

NCAA Football: CFP National Championship-Ohio State at Notre Dame

The Buckeyes spent time offering both a 2026 and 2028 quarterback on Thursday.

With a recruiting dead period on the horizon, the Ohio State coaching staff has made up for lost time this week, and Thursday proved to be the same story. From new offers going out to visiting top targets in the 2026 class and beyond, the Buckeyes have been cashing in on the momentum fresh off a national championship.

Offers dished out to new names

Searching for their guy to hold the quarterback reins in the 2026 class, the Buckeyes are keeping their eyes open still in evaluation mode. With several of the top players at the position already off the board, Ohio State’s options may be somewhat limited, but it’s hard to count Ryan Day out at the most important position on the field considering his track record.

The Buckeyes have an elite player signed in 2025 and another top player in 2027 already committed, but the 2026 class is a bit of puzzle that needs sorting out. On Thursday, Ohio State at least brought another potential player to the table when they offered their latest at the position courtesy of 2026 Texas native, Bowe Bentley.

The No. 291 player nationally and the 18th best signal caller per the 247Sports Composite, Bentley currently owns nearly 30 offers to his name, with Ohio State being the latest to join the mix for the 6-foot-2, 200 pound athlete.

Schools such as Arizona, Florida State, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin stick out as some of the bigger programs with interest, but it’s not out of the cards to say the Buckeyes are the most impressive offer now to date for Bentley. Not to diminish his resume thus far, Ohio State clearly thinks highly enough to pull the trigger.

Additional new names could follow in the coming weeks as Ohio State continues its search, but for now Bentley is the newest name worth watching as far as quarterback efforts go.

#AGTG After a great conversation with @CoachFess, I am blessed to receive an offer from Ohio State!! @Nathaneelliott1 @DamianDevon @RecruitCelinaFB @dctf @247recruiting @Rivals @On3Recruits @OhioStateFB pic.twitter.com/iLAVZkmtLc

— Bowe Bentley (@bowebentley) January 30, 2025

Sticking with the position, but looking down the road, Ohio State continued its quarterback recruiting on Thursday by offering a quickly rising prospect in the 2028 class. Not wanting to waste time, the Buckeyes aren’t the first to offer Florida native, Wonderful Monds, but once again may be arguably the most impressive offer he’s earned to date very early on in his recruitment.

A 6-foot-2, 225 pound athlete, Monds is only a high school freshman, but holds offers from the likes of Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and several others with the Buckeye also getting involved.

A Vero Beach product, Ohio State was just able to land Tarvos Alford in their 2025 class from the same prep power, and it looks like they’re trying to do nothing more than stay present in a school that is producing some top talent each year.

There’s plenty of time before Monds is even ranked via his 247Sports profile, and even more time before a decision is even close to coming, but Ohio State getting involved this early on is a great chance for them to be a player for the long haul.

WOW! Blessed and honored to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University! #AGTG #gobuckeyes @ryandaytime @CoachFess @OhioStateFB @VBFootball @TomLoy247 @ChadSimmons_@adamgorney @Andy_Villamarzo @QwikCutSports @JonSantucci pic.twitter.com/7rHF75Fnuv

Quick Hits

  • In addition to the new offers thrown out, the visit agenda was fast and furious with Ohio State’s position coaches all over the map. Taking his time in Florida, Brian Hartline made a stop to see four-star receiver target Jabari Brady, showing how important he is on the recruiting board for the Buckeyes.

The No. 62 player nationally and the 11th best receiver per the 247Sports Composite, Brady holds nearly 40 offers to his name, and has made it clear Ohio State is one of the top schools on his list.

  • Coach Day also making his rounds as he has all week. The Vero Beach stop wasn’t just to offer their 2028 QB, but also to see offensive line target, Micah Smith.

A 6-foot-5, 305 pound four-star, Smith is the No. 73 player nationally and the sixth best at his position for the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite. A priority in the next cycle, offensive line needs to continue adding elite depth and numbers, and Ohio State is showing Smith they want him very much to be part of that recipe.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 31 ReliaQuest Bowl - Alabama vs Michigan

Photo by Joe Robbins/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Dante and Jordan are back to react to Michigan fighting the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations. Plus, tampering in college football and the 2024 season review!

Welcome to a new episode of Land-Grant Podcast Network’s I-80 Football Show. On this show, we travel down I-80 to talk all things Big Ten Football. After every week of action, we will catch you up on all the conference’s games and look ahead at the matchups, storylines, and players you should be paying attention to for the next week. My name is Jordan Williams, and I am joined by my co-host Dante Morgan.

The guys are back for the first show of the offseason, and the Big Ten never fails to give us news.

In an Ohio State themed Traffic Update, Dante and Jordan get into Penn State’s hiring of Jim Knowles. We may never know the reason for Knowles leaving the Buckeyes. Whether it was money, drama amongst the coaching staff, or a desire to coach at the school he was a fan of as a child, Knowles has moved on to State College. This ratchets up the pressure on Penn State to win a national championship in 2025.

In other Ohio State news, programs across the country unsuccessfully tried to tamper with OSU’s roster.

In a saga that has lasted over a year, Michigan is fighting back against the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations. According to the Wolverines, there was a little in-person scouting, but since the NCAA didn’t do enough to prove the scouting affected the play on the field, they believe the violations should be dropped from Level One to Level Two and a slap on the wrist.

There’s no way that the NCAA is going to go easy on Michigan unless they believe that Sherrone Moore, the former offensive coordinator and current head coach, deleted his text with Connor Stallions because he was angry with Stallions for hurting the players. We’ll be on the lookout, as the sanctions should be coming in a couple of months.

While the college football season has ended, the NFL is still playing games, including the conference championship games last weekend. Despite the social media criticism, Josh Allen did not get a first down and the refs made the right call. After all his success in the NFL, has Patrick Mahomes officially become the boogeyman? He seems unbeatable in his quest for the first three-peat in the Super Bowl era.

While the Commanders ultimately fell to the Eagles, they’re going to be a contender for years to come.

In his weekly pitstop, Jordan asks for everyone to read a book. Often as adults, we talk about how much we used to love reading, so in 2025 let’s all start reading again.

If you like the show, please share it with friends and family and leave a five-star review. To keep up with the show, you can subscribe to the Land-Grant Podcast Network Feed, where new episodes drop every Thursday.

NCAA Basketball: Ohio State at Penn State

The Buckeyes defeated the Nittany Lions 83-64 to extend their winning streak to three games and get back to .500 in conference play.

The Ohio State Buckeyes (13-8, 5-5) defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions (13-9, 3-8) 83-64 Thursday night in Happy Valley to extend its winning streak to three games and get back to .500 in conference play.

This game was notably played at Rec Hall, which is the current home of Penn State’s men’s and women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s gymnastics and wrestling teams. It was also the longtime home of the men’s and women’s basketball teams until a 1996 move to the Bryce Jordan Center.

Penn State was 3-1 heading into this game at Rec Hall, having won by one point last season over No. 12 Illinois.

Freshman guard John Mobley Jr. was the catalyst to start the game, recording an assist and five points on the Buckeye’s first seven points of the game. The Buckeyes took an early 7-4 lead and were able to push that out to a 16-11 lead at the under-12 timeout.

The Buckeyes then did a great job of complementary offense and defense, pushing the lead out to double digits halfway through the first half and not allowing Penn State to go on a run and cut back into the lead.

With 2:10 seconds left in the first half, Nick Kern of Penn State received a technical foul, which resulted in two free throws for Mobley and gave Ohio State a 39-26 lead.

Devin Royal recorded four straight points after two Penn State free throws to make the score 43-28. Penn State closed the half strong, going on a 5-0 run in the final minute to cut the Buckeye lead to 43-33 at halftime.

Micah Parrish and Bruce Thornton each played 18 minutes during first half, with Mobley leading the team in scoring with 13 points on 4-for-10 shooting and 3-for-8 from three-point range.

Royal added ten points and six rebounds on 4-for-7 shooting during the opening stanza. Parrish had eight first-half points, and Thornton added six points, two assists, and two steals. Mobley also had four assists.

For Penn State, Konan-Niederhauser had ten points and a couple of highlight dunks. Zach Hicks added seven points, and Ace Baldwin had six points.

Ohio State shot 16-for-36 (44 percent) from the field and 5-for-14 from three-point range in the opening half. They also shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, while Penn State shot 12-for-25 (48 percent) from the field, 4-for-12 from three-point range and 5-for-9 from the free-throw line.

The big difference in the first half was the rebounding disparity, with Ohio State collecting 23 rebounds and Penn State collecting 12. The Buckeyes also had nine offensive rebounds to the Nittany Lions' two.

To start the second half, Hicks knocked down two three-pointers to cut the Ohio State lead to 45-39, but a free throw from Sean Stewart, a Royal dunk, and a Ques Glover jumper saw Ohio State push the lead back out to 11.

After a long timeout for an issue with the scoreboard at Rec Hall with 14 minutes left in the game, Penn State entered the bonus in just six minutes, so free throws were given out generously over the final 14 minutes of this game. Ohio State joined PSU in the double bonus just a few minutes later, with both teams shooting two on every foul for basically the entire final 10 minutes of the game.

Once the Buckeyes got into the double bonus, Bruce Thornton knocked down back-to-back three pointers, and Mobley and Parrish were also both fouled shooting three-pointers. Ohio State led 67-53 at the under-8 timeout thanks to those crucial Penn State mistakes.

Two more Royal free-throws gave the Buckeyes a 71-54 led with seven minutes left in the game. In the first 13 minutes of the second half, 24 fouls were called and there was no more than 1:10 of game time without a foul being called.

Thornton knocked down a step-back three-pointer to give the Buckeyes an 18-point lead at 74-56 with six minutes remaining in the game. A floater from Mobley pushed the Ohio State lead to 20, its largest lead of the game. The Buckeyes took a 78-60 lead into the final media timeout with four minutes left in the game.

The Buckeyes controlled possession for the rest of the game and never opened the door back up for Penn State, winning the game 83-64. This was a guard heavy performance from the Buckeyes, with Mobley recording 19 points and Thornton recording 17. Royal added 15 points and eight rebounds. Konan-Niederhauser led Penn State with 21 points.
