Looking at the top-tier contenders in the Big Ten including reigning national champion, Michigan.
Every week after the Big Ten games, I will bring you some B1G thoughts on everything that happened! This will include analysis, stats, key players, moments, and more. With the Big Ten expanding from 14 teams to 18 teams in 2024 we will have a bunch of storylines to follow. Ryan Day and Ohio State are all in for the 2024 season.
Is Oregon a national championship contender or will they stumble in their first Big Ten season? How do the former members of the Big Ten West fair in the new division-less format? This article tracks all these storylines and more as the Big Ten hopes to win back-to-back national championships.

Michigan defeated future Big Ten conference mate Washington in the National Championship game last season. Before they could celebrate, they had to manage losing head coach Jim Harbaugh and an overwhelming majority of their staff. After going 15-0 and being the first Big Ten team to win a national championship since Ohio State in 2014, they decided to go with continuity, hiring offense coordinator Sherrone Moore as head coach.
They lost over 10 players to the NFL Draft, but arguably their most talented players are still on the roster in cornerback Will Johnson and defensive tackles Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham. They also maintained running back Donovan Edwards, who is looking to rebound from a disappointing 2023 season. If his performance in the national championship game is a precursor, he will have a bounce-back year in 2024.
Ultimately, this season depends on who they select to be their starting quarterback after JJ McCarthy left for the NFL. Michigan will likely take a step back in 2024, but how big of a step is yet to be seen.
Iowa and Nebraska are the two programs from the Big Ten West most prepared to be successful in 2024.
That’s expected from Iowa, who will enter this season with a new offensive coordinator and a talented defense coached by the best defensive coordinator in the nation. They hope to have better injury luck and that a more successful offense will lead to a legitimate challenge to Oregon and Ohio State and a potential playoff run. Iowa is looking to sneak into the playoffs and spoil someone’s day, but can they stop being an embarrassment on offense?
Nebraska is a much more surprising entrant into the top-tier contenders list, but Matt Rhule has worked wonders at Temple and Baylor in his second year, and he has the best quarterback he’s ever had in five-star Dylan Raiola. Nebraska was a much better team last year than their record suggests, but they could not find a quarterback who wouldn’t commit unforced errors.
If Raiola lives up to half his hype, and Nebraska’s defense is once again a top 50 unit in the nation, expect a tough out in Nebraska. With an easy schedule in 2024, Nebraska has a real chance of being a top-25 team by the end of the year.
We’ve all heard it before, but it’s true - Penn State is one of if not
the biggest beneficiary of the expanded playoff and a divisionless Big Ten. Penn State is a perennial 10-2 team, struggling to beat Ohio State and Michigan every year. While they still play Ohio State, they don’t play Michigan and have a schedule that should end in a playoff run and hosting a first-round playoff game this December.
Former five-star quarterback Drew Allar did not live up to the hype last season, but it was his first season as a starter and he had nobody to throw to. With former Ohio State wide receiver Julian Fleming on the roster and another year to improve, Allar could be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference, which would bode well for the Nittany Lions.
James Franklin has struggled to win big games, and Ohio State and Oregon are loaded, but if Penn State can secure a second or third-place finish they’ll be in the College Football Playoff, and that should be enough for the Penn State faithful.
