Matt Rhule has a chance to bring Nebraska back to competence and James Franklin MUST capitalize on his schedule and returning talent.

Welcome to a new episode of Land-Grant Podcast Network’s I-80 Football Show. On this show, we travel down I-80 to talk all things Big Ten Football. This is the only Big Ten Podcast that’ll cover all 18 teams. After every week of action, we will catch you up on all the conference’s games and look ahead at the matchups, storylines, and players you should be paying attention to for the next week. My name is Jordan Williams, and I am joined by my co-host Dante Morgan.

In his previous two jobs at Temple and Baylor, Matt Rhule went from 2-10 and 1-11 in his first season respectively to 10-3 and 11-3 and winning conference championships at both stops. Nebraska wasn’t as big of a rebuild leading Rhule to go 5-7 in year one while ending the season with four losses three by a field goal and the fourth by a touchdown in overtime. Rhule brings back a top-50 defense and a five-star quarterback who in an ideal world won’t turn the ball over as much as last season which led them to being 129th in turnover margin at -17. Nebraska should be good in 2024 and they have a relatively light schedule. Could we see a nine-win Nebraska or will they continue losing close games and lead to more disappointment?

Iowa is continuing it be the most consistent and therefore most uninteresting program in the country. Tell me if you’ve heard this before, they’re going to have a great defense led by a star secondary but their offense will be bad. Iowa is in a position to play spoiler in the College Football Playoffs though because with their schedule and their defense, they could easily be in contention for a fourth Big Ten spot in the playoffs if they go 9-3 or 10-2. It may be a long shot but no one wants to play Iowa in December in a playoff game.

Despite the lack of attention, Michigan has no quarterback, lost most of its offensive line, and lost its most impactful players on defense. The good news is they have their arguably most talented players on defense still with cornerback Will Johnson and defensive tackles Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham. Michigan already wants to run the ball but without a quarterback who can make big plays when needed Michigan can go anywhere from 7-5 to 9-3. Time to find out how good a coach Sherrone Moore is.

Penn State is going to make the playoffs. If they miss the playoffs it will be because they lose 3-4 games. If they lose 3-4 games it’s time to let James Franklin walk. Penn State may once again play third fiddle to the top of the conference but this year third should be enough for a top-eight seed and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Penn State has lost some talented players and they have to rebuild their secondary but they still are led by Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, and Kayton Allen. They should also have a scary pass rush, again, with Dani Dennis-Sutton and Abdul Carter being moved to the defensive end. With only Ohio State on their schedule escaping Michigan and Oregon, Penn State has a chance to go 11-1. Don’t mess this up, James Franklin.

We all know Oregon is the toughest game this season, but who are some pitfall games on the schedule?

We are officially nine days from the start of college football, and 16 days away from Ohio State’s CBS debut against Akron to kick off the 2024 season on Aug. 31.

As we get closer to the season, we can really dive into previewing the schedule and circling the big games on the calendar. The Buckeyes’ slate is not the most difficult, but it has its fair share of possible pitfalls, tough road matchups, and games that they just have to get through healthy.

Here are all 12 of Ohio State’s regular season games sorted into four tiers.

Game of the Year: At Oregon

This one is very simple and deserves to be on a tier of its own.

No offense to the other top teams in the conference, but Oregon is one of the top teams in the country. Dillon Gabriel is a legitimate Heisman contender, Tez Johnson and Evan Stewart are both elite targets, the offensive line is really solid and the defense is at the top of the conference.

On Oct. 12, Ohio State has to travel to Autzen Stadium in Eugene to face the Ducks, which is one of the hardest places to play in college football. If the Buckeyes come out of that game with a win, that will answer a lot of the questions coming into the season.

The good part is that there is a high chance they will see each other in the Big Ten Championship game, too.

Difficult: at Penn State; vs. Michigan

Per usual, the Buckeyes will have to get through Penn State and Michigan.

Penn State is likely the harder matchup just because it is in Happy Valley, which is always a tough place to play. Drew Allar is a good quarterback who will need to jump into the great tier for the Nittany Lions to take the next step, but no matter what, with the players Penn State has it will be a grind.

Michigan lost a lot, but they are still 3-0 against the Buckeyes over the last three years and have an elite defense. They have some things to work out on offense, but this is three months into the season, and those questions should be answered by then.

Don’t Take Them Lightly: at Michigan State; vs. Iowa; vs. Nebraska

The Jonathan Smith and Aidan Chiles era is here in East Lansing, but they may need more than one year to get rolling.

Iowa has a great defense again, so if they can just get anything on offense, they can win some games against elite opponents.

I think Nebraska will take a huge jump this season, as all college teams do in their second year with Matt Rhule at the helm.

Just Win and Stay Healthy: vs. Akron; vs. Marshall; vs. Western Michigan; vs. Indiana; at. Northwestern; vs. Purdue

These six games are what we call “just stay healthy.”

To be fair, I do think Curt Cignetti and Indiana will be pretty good soon, but in the first season, there will be a lot of room to grow.

The other five are against wildly overmatched teams where the starters will likely only see the field in the first half.

Just win these games and move on.
