2025-2026 Ohio State Men's Basketball

Close the books and throw it away. Officially on to next year…

Let’s start on the roster turnover now.

If all 3 or even 2 of our best 3 players are hitting the portal, then I’d say we need to move on from Jake. He can’t reasonably turn it around next year if our talent isn’t better than it was this Year. And by turning the Crown Tourney down I’d say Jake knows that a critical mass of our current starters aren’t going to be here in 2 weeks.

Hopefully they stay and we can give Jake another year to figure it out and win next year.

From the players perspective I can see why they wouldn't want to stay. The lack of care for the program from the Athletic Department surely trickles down to them.

I'd say Thornton and Mobley are walking for sure. I could see Royal sticking around but would not be shocked if he left as well.

Just sayin': Well, for starters Micah Parrish (Senior), Ques Glover (Senior), and Meechie Johnson (quit team) definitely won't be back. I'll also say Kalen Etzler (who has been here 4 years; but redshirted one) won't be back either.

Can Ohio State return the "core players", i.e. Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal, Evan Mahaffey, and John Mobley? I'll say that they also want to keep Ivan Njegovan, Colin White, Taison Chatman, and Austin Parks all who have potential to develop and be significant contributors.

Just the fact that they finished 2024/2025 2-5 and declined the Las Vegas tournament leads me to believe that there was some unhappiness/disenstion on the team. Does Bruce thornton go pro? Do any of the above transfer out?

The other big questions are:

1) What about Aaron Bradshaw and Sean Stewart. They were major disappointments considering the amount of NIL money they probably received, etc. I'm guessing that they just hit the transfer portial again this year.

2) Can Diebler get some impact players for 2025/2026 out of the portial?

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament - Seattle Regional

Compete against fellow Buckeyes and LGHL writers in the women’s basketball tournament challenge.

It’s that time of year again. A time when multiple screens is not a luxury but a necessity. When paid time off at work is used liberally, or no work is done at all. That’s right, it’s NCAA Tournament time and Land-Grant Holy Land wants to add to the fun.

For the third season in a row, the site has a women’s basketball bracket challenge for you to join, for free (minus how much you pay to get on the internet and all that). Join the bracket challenge, fill out a bracket, and see if you can beat other Ohio State fans and non-Buckeye fans who just follow great basketball coverage.

The winner of the tournament challenge receives the all-important bragging rights for one year. You can tell everyone online and in person that you are the best basketball prognosticator in the world and no one will be able to argue against you otherwise.

Each person who enters gets one bracket to enter. Go with all of the higher seeds, pick the most ferocious animal mascot (sorry, Brutus), or follow your heart. No matter which way you go, it’s the time of the year when completing a bracket is not only fun but required.

Brackets must be filled out and accepted by 11:30 a.m. ET on March 21, which is when the field of 64 teams begins play.

Thank you for playing and good luck!

NCAA Womens Basketball: Big Ten Conference Tournament Championship- UCLA vs USC

With Selection Sunday in the rearview mirror, we also discuss our dream women’s basketball tournament matchups

Welcome to a new episode of Land-Grant Podcast Network’s Power Two Podcast. On this show, we talk about Big Ten and SEC football…and everyone else. This show is for the die-hard fans and the casual college football fans.

In this episode, Jordan and DJ discuss the small things that bring them joy. DJ got a new cup that she’s really excited about and Jordan loves to ride the subway alone. The sun has come out and it has raised both of their spirits as well!

In the news, DJ and Jordan react to Steph Curry getting the Assistant General Manager Role at Davidson. DJ thinks it’s an indication of his impending retirement and Jordan thinks it’s just a glamor title. DJ also shares her excitement for the announcement of “The Real SC” series that will occur between the University of South Carolina and the University of Southern California women’s basketball. They are slated for the next two years, which means we get to see Juju Watkins and Milaysia Fulwiley head to head for two years! To wrap up the news, Jordan sounds off on Justin Field’s new NFL contract.

In the two-minute drill, DJ kicks off a conversation about women’s college basketball bracketology. Her dream Elite 8 would be South Carolina, UConn, USC, Notre Dame, Duke, NC State, LSU, and UCLA. Jordan shares that his dream championship game would be either South Carolina and UConn or South Carolina and USC. They discuss the potential changes in the rankings with Selection Sunday fast approaching. DJ believes that South Carolina will take the number one seed even with UCLA currently holding it. DJ and Jordan agreed that they would be happy with either UConn or South Carolina hoisting up the trophy in the end.

For the pregame power sweep, we discuss Big 12 Football. DJ and Jordan share the sentiment that this may be the conference that they watch the least but there is a small group of teams to watch. Kansas State, BYU, Arizona State, and Iowa State were mentioned as the teams to keep an eye on throughout the season. DJ picks for games to watch were: Arizona State - Utah, BYU-Colorado, BYU - Iowa State, Kansas - Kansas State, and Kansas - Iowa State. Jordan’s picks were: Iowa State - Kansas State, ASU-Colorado, ASU - ISU, Utah - BYU, and WVU - Kansas.

In the two-minute warning, DJ shares information about the upcoming WNBA Draft on April 14. Jordan expresses his concerns about the recent news about Southwest Airlines eliminating free checked baggage.

2026 Ohio Sate OL commit Maxwell Riley | Dan Harker, 247Sports

The Buckeyes return to the practice field in front of a number of top prospects.

Ohio State will return to the (practice) field for the first time since securing a national championship with the start of spring practice on Monday. The Buckeyes will feature a ton of new faces this year, but Ryan Day and his staff still have a loaded roster at their disposal as they try to go back-to-back in the 12-team College Football Playoff era.

While the on-field happenings are sure to bring their fair share of news and updates, there is equally as much happening off the field as Ohio State will host a ton of top prospects on Monday during its first of 15 practice sessions, which will culminate in the “Spring Showcase” on April 12 as a replacement for the traditional Spring Game.

Here are some of the big names who will be in attendance at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center this afternoon. All rankings are via the 247Sports Composite unless otherwise noted.

Maxwell Riley (2026, four-star)

No. 7 OT, No. 2 OH, No. 87 Natl. (247Sports) - Ohio State commit

Riley will be making his first trip to Columbus as a member of the Buckeyes’ 2026 class, having been to Ohio State several times in the past year including for the team’s national title celebration back in January. The Avon Lake native will get a chance to do some peer recruiting as one of five OSU commits in the current class and the first offensive lineman.

Sam Greer (2026, four-star)

No. 17 OT, No. 7 OH, No. 188 Natl.

Speaking of peer recruiting, fellow in-state offensive lineman Sam Greer will also be in attendance on Monday as part of a busy few weeks of visits for the 6-foot-6.5, 310-pound tackle. Of note, this will be the first time that Greer and new Ohio State position coach Tyler Bowen will get to meet in person.

Four-star Akron (Ohio) Hoban offensive tackle Sam Greer has set his spring practice visit schedule he tells @Rivals

Jake Kruel (2026, four-star)

No. 5 EDGE, No. 3 FL, No. 37 Natl.

Having last visited Ohio State for the Michigan game, Kruel will make a return visit to Columbus on Monday. The IMG Academy standout included the Buckeyes among his top 12 schools a few weeks ago, having cut his offer sheet down from a whopping 50 schools.

A teammate of incoming Ohio State freshman wide receiver Quincy Porter at Bergen Catholic in New Jersey, Thomas will make the trip to Columbus on Monday having last visited for the Buckeyes’ 45-0 beatdown of Purdue in November. With over 40 offers to his name, the 6-foot-1 defensive back will use his spring visits to trim down his list of suitors.

Micah Smith (2026, four-star)

No. 9 IOL, No. 18 FL, No. 134 Natl.

Smith has already been to Ohio State on a number of occasions, but will once again make the trek to campus on Monday to, like Greer, meet face-to-face with Bowen for the first time. The women’s team hosts St. Lawrence in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game.

Ohio State hockey had a mixed bag of results last weekend. The women’s hockey team was tripped up 6-2 by Minnesota in a WCHA Final Faceoff semifinal. Things looked good early on for the Buckeyes, with Jocelyn Amos and Joy Dunne netting goals in the first 9:23 of the game.

Unfortunately, those two goals would be the only tallies Ohio State was able to record in the game. The Golden Gophers scored six unanswered goals to clinch their spot in the conference tournament final. The loss marked the first time since 2019 that the Buckeyes weren’t able to reach the WCHA Final Faceoff Championship Game.

Despite the loss, Ohio State comfortably made the NCAA Tournament field with an at-large bid, earning the second-best overall seed. As one of the top three seeds, the Buckeyes earned a first-round bye.

Nadine Muzerall didn’t find out who her team would play until Thursday night when St. Lawrence and Penn State battled at OSU Ice Rink. The Saints beat the Nittany Lions 4-1 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals behind two goals from Abby Hustler and 32 saves from goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström.

The two schools met early in the season in October in New York, with Ohio State sweeping both games. The first matchup ended in a 3-2 win in overtime for the Buckeyes. The open game of the series was a back-and-forth affair.

After St. Lawrence took a lead at the 11:59 mark of the first period, Jenna Buglioni leveled the score just over four minutes later. Abby Hustler regained the lead for the Saints in the second period before Jocelyn Amos tied the game nearly halfway through the third period. Buglioni netted the game-winning goal just seven seconds into overtime to give the Buckeyes the win.

The second game of the series was another thrilling contest. This time, Ohio State jumped out to a lead after Riley Brengman scored a goal at 3:20 in the game. Taylor Lum would tie the score later in the first period before Kiara Zanon and Joy Dunne scored just over a minute apart to send the Buckeyes into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead. The Saints would regroup in the second with goals from Aly McLeod and Sarah Marchand to tie the score. Buglioni would again record the game-winning goal, followed by Amos adding an empty net insurance goal with 36 seconds left.

While Ohio State has a powerful offense to go along with veteran goaltending from Amanda Thiele, St. Lawrence hangs their hat on goaltending from Emma-Sofie Nordström, who has six shutouts and a 1.68 goals against average in 35 starts this year. Abby Hustler is the biggest offensive threat for the Saints, scoring 19 goals and 39 points this year. The only other St. Lawrence player who has scored at least 10 goals is Anna Segedi. Sarah Marchand, Aly McLeod, Kennedy Wilson, and Taylor Lum each have nine goals each.

St. Lawrence is making its second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Saints have made five trips to the Frozen Four, all of which occurred between 2001 and 2007. Despite being so close to a title, St. Lawrence is still looking to win its first national championship. The closest they came was in 2001, when they made the final.

The puck drop for tonight’s game between Ohio State and St. Lawrence is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN+. The winner of tonight’s contest will advance to the Frozen Four to face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Clarkson and Minnesota Duluth.

Men’s hockey

Last weekend didn’t start off too hot for Ohio State’s men’s hockey team. Playing at Nationwide Arena, the Buckeyes dropped the first game of a best-of-three series against Wisconsin 4-1. Midway through the second period the Badgers had already built a 3-0 lead. The only goal scored by Ohio State came from the stick of Brent Johnson at the 4:19 mark of the third period. Wisconsin goalie Tommy Scarfone made 28 saves to put the Buckeyes in an early hole.

Things looked bleak for Ohio State in the first half of game two, as Wisconsin jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes finally got on the board when Jake Rozzi scored with just over three minutes left in the second period. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine would tie the game with 1:29 left in the third period to send the game to overtime.

Riley Thompson would ensure there would be a game three between the schools with his game-winning goal at 7:50 of the first overtime, marking the fourth straight year Ohio State has gone to a game three in their first round series of the Big Ten Tournament.

Rozzi would again score first for the Buckeyes on Sunday, but Wisconsin tied the game up just over a minute later when they netted a power play goal. The score would remain tied until Davis Burnside’s power play goal midway through the third period would put Ohio State in the lead. Max Montes scored an unassisted three minutes later, putting a little breathing room on Wisconsin, who would score with less than three minutes left but weren’t able to find a goal to tie the game. With the wins, the Buckeyes ran their record against the Badgers to 6-1 this season.

NCAA Hockey: Penn State at Michigan
Brian Bradshaw Sevald-Imagn Images

Next up for Ohio State is Penn State, who easily handled Michigan last week in Ann Arbor, beating the Wolverines 6-5 in overtime on Friday, followed by a 5-2 win on Saturday. With the two victories, the Nittany Lions have a record of 20-12-4 on the season. J.J Wiebusch was the star of the series opener, with his overtime goal not only winning the game for Penn State, it also capped off a hat trick. Wiebusch would add a goal in Saturday’s game, pushing his season total to 11 goals.

Pacing the Penn State offense is Aiden Fink, who has 23 goals and 28 assists this season. Charlie Cerrato and Reese Laubach each have scored 15 goals, Matt DiMarsico has netted 13 goals, followed by Danny Dzhaniyev’s 12 goals. Simon Mack has set up numerous goals for the Nittany Lions, recording 24 assists. Arsenii Sergeev has 17 wins, four shutouts, and posted a 2.63 goals against average between the pipes for Penn State.

The conference foes met four times during the regular season, with each school recording two wins. Ohio State swept the two games in Columbus in early December, beating the Nittany Lions 4-0 and 4-2. Penn State responded with a win in a shootout after a 6-6 game in late January, followed by a 3-2 win in overtime in State College.

Kristoffer Eberly started three of the four games at goalie for Ohio State, with Logan Terness only starting the finale between the teams. Expect to see Terness between the pipes for the Buckeyes on Saturday night since he has been getting the bulk of the starts at goaltender down the stretch.

Tonight’s game is slated to start at 8:30 p.m. ET at Value City Arena and can be seen on Big Ten Network. The winner will go on to meet the winner of the other semifinal between Michigan State and Notre Dame in the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game next Saturday. The winner of the conference tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament - Second Round - Columbus

Photo by Ron Schwane/NCAA Photos via Getty Images

The Buckeyes are home for the first two rounds of March Madness after making it into the tournament as a No. 4 seed

It’s been nearly a year since Ohio State women’s basketball crashed out of the NCAA Tournament in the Second Round. After going up 16 points in the first half against the Duke Blue Devils, the ACC side stormed back to knock the Buckeyes out of March Madness. Now, the Scarlet and Gray know their road to make up for that defeat and try to make their first NCAA National Championship game since 1993. It all begins against the Montana State Bobcats, who won the Big Sky Tournament.

The Buckeyes have not faced Montana State. The Bobcats made the tournament after defeating Montana in a nail biting 58-57 win over in-state rivals Montana on Wednesday, March 12.

Ohio State will also host for the third consecutive season, and enter as a four seed, after narrowly making one of the top-16 spots in the field of 68 teams. With it, the Buckeyes welcome Montana State, the University of South Florida Bulls and Tennessee Volunteers to Columbus for the first two rounds of the tournament.

If the two highest seeded teams prevail in the first round in Columbus, the Buckeyes will face the Vols, a side that Ohio State played twice in the past two seasons, winning both games. However, that’s before head coach Kim Caldwell took over the Tennessee side in the offseason.

USF and Ohio State also have history, playing each other in December of 2022 when the Buckeyes battled back from a late deficit to beat the Bulls by two points.

In the Big Ten, three other programs host in this year’s March Madness. The UCLA Bruins, USC Trojans and Maryland Terrapins each made a top-four seed. UCLA and USC each earned a No. 1 seed. Also, the Bruins earned the No. 1 overall seed in the country for the first time in program history, dethroning the South Carolina Gamecocks.

This is the 29th time Ohio State made the annual tournament and fourth consecutive season, following sanctions leaving the Buckeyes out of the 2021 edition, the 2020 tournament cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and failing to earn an at-large bid in the 2019 season.

The 2025 edition of March Madness means the final games for four Buckeye upperclassmen. Guard Madison Greene and forwards Taylor Thierry, Eboni Walker and Ajae Petty are all in their final year of eligibility at Ohio State. From here on, every game is potentially their last and each matchup is the difference between moving on in the tournament or heading into the long, nearly eight-month, offseason.

Since head coach Kevin McGuff joined Ohio State in April of 2013, the Buckeyes have not lost a first round game in eight appearances but have three losses in the second round.

2025 tOSU Special Teams Discussion

All well and good, but what he did in the CFP is the minimum that he's supposed to do. The only reason it's being recognized is because of how he crapped the bed in The Game. Surely, we're planning to bring in some competition when the portal is open.

Currently the back up to Jayden Fielding is Casey Magyar. He attended high school in Dublin OH and came to Ohio State as a preferred walk on transfer from Kent State. In 2021 he made 1 of 2 extra point kicks for Kent State. His Ohio State bio is as follows:

Ohio State Overview
• Casey was a preferred walk-on to the team in the spring of 2023 and is in his second season with the program after transferring from Kent State
• He is an OSU Scholar-Athlete who is majoring in mathematics

Honors & Awards
2023:
OSU Scholar-Athlete

More on Casey
• Casey spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons playing for Kent State
• Made his collegiate debut in the 2021 home opener against VMI, making one PAT
• Also saw time against Western Michigan attempting one PAT
• Was a second-team All-Ohio and first-team All-District kicker for Coffman

Just sayin': Yeah, we definitely need another placekicker.
