The Buckeyes will host a Gators commit for The Game.

While Ohio State won’t have an opportunity to host recruits this weekend when it's on the road, the primetime game will still see plenty of eyes taking in the Buckeyes. A chance to continue impressing, it will be a shock to see this squad do anything but try and take it to the Spartans early and often in the conference opener.

Big Ten football is officially here.

2026 Florida DB sets Ohio State visit

The Buckeyes and Tim Walton are looking to put together another impressive haul in the 2026 cycle. An in-state class that boasts two top cornerbacks in Elbert Hill and Victor Singleton, Ohio State will try their best to recreate the 2024 class success by once again keeping those top Ohio native players at home for their college years.

The Buckeyes are also sure to look outside of their own state lines for top players to help reload the defensive secondary. While having Ohio’s home grown talent so high on their list is a major advantage, this coaching staff leaves no stone unturned when it comes to landing top talent to keep the roster atop of the college football landscape. The 2026 class will be no different, even if they are able to land both Hill and Singleton.

Of the many names the Buckeyes will keep in contact with, Ohio State knows they will soon see one prospect they have yet to offer on campus this fall when he makes an unofficial visit to Columbus. It wouldn’t be a major surprise if an offer came shortly after, considering the interest he’s showing by making a trek to the Midwest.

Florida native Jaelen Waters is currently committed to the Gators, but does have plans to see several schools this fall while still keeping his options at least somewhat open. Trips set for Florida State, LSU, Miami, Oregon, and Ohio State, Waters is doing his best to make sure his current pledge is the right one, and rightfully so when you look at the potential for Florida to see coaching and program changes if things aren’t fixed in a hurry this season.

The No. 192 player nationally and 17th best cornerback in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite, Waters will be at Ohio State on Nov. 30 when the Buckeyes play host to their bitter rivals for The Game. By then, he may be a player Ohio State has even more interest in should he decide to renege on his commitment to the Gators.

Either way, the Buckeyes and Walton will look to continue their track record of landing elite level defensive backs in this next recruiting class coming up.

Quick Hits

  • This 2025 class for the Buckeyes has been pretty solid in regard to players keeping true to their commitments, but like any class, there’s a player or two that may have cause for concern.

Not trying to point blame or put any player down, Zahir Mathis falls into the worrisome category as rumblings of him maybe looking at Penn State among other schools has come up over the last few months. Still committed to Ohio State, Mathis has now locked in his official visit with the Buckeyes for the Oct. 25 weekend. That’s obviously a chance for the staff to reassure him that he made the right choice.

The No. 63 player nationally and sixth best edge rusher in the class per the 247Sports Composite, Larry Johnson wants nothing more than to keep Mathis in the class, and his visit can certainly help those chances. Zahir has stayed with his pledge, and with signing day getting closer, the late October visit will hopefully cement that he’s a Buckeye and any worry of him flipping can be put to bed.

Illinois v Nebraska

Illinois is 4-0 heading into a primetime game with Penn State, and you should pay your quarterback!

Welcome to a new episode of Land-Grant Podcast Network’s I-80 Football Show. On this show, we travel down I-80 to talk all things Big Ten Football. After every week of action, we will catch you up on all the conference’s games and look ahead at the matchups, storylines, and players you should be paying attention to for the next week.

My name is Jordan Williams, and I am joined by my co-host Dante Morgan.

Dante and Jordan are back, but before we can get into the Big Ten we have to talk about the drama out west.

Instead of merging with the Mountain West, the Pac-12 is trying to poach teams, but it is not working. After the AAC spurned the Pac-12, they are left with nothing but the remaining Mountain West schools they didn’t want originally, and now they’re suing to try and avoid paying poaching fees.

The West is a mess right now, including UNLV whose starting quarterback just decided to redshirt because they did not meet a verbal NIL commitment. This is why all athletes need to get their NIL commitments in a written contract, but until then we may see more athletes decide to take a redshirt versus playing for free or less than expected.

Back to the Big Ten, we’re set up for a banner weekend starting with Rutgers vs. Washington on Friday night. After outlasting Virginia Tech, Rutgers is hoping to keep their momentum and improve to 4-0.

After defeating Nebraska, Illinois is undefeated before their showdown with Penn State. Penn State is more talented, but they’ve already shown flaws including playing a close game with Bowling Green. Illinois is much better than Bowing Green. Penn State has been inconsistent and should be on upset watch.

After losing to Michigan, USC has to face Wisconsin. USC’s rude welcome may last another week, because Michigan gave the blueprint to beating the Trojans and Wisconsin should be able to run on Lincoln Riley’s defense.

For this week’s Mapquest:

  • Friday: Washington at Rutgers
  • Saturday, noon: Maryland at Indiana
  • Saturday, mid-day: Wisconsin at USC
  • Saturday, primetime: Illinois at Penn State
  • Saturday, Big Ten After Dark: Oregon at UCLA

In their weekly pitstop, Dante can’t believe that WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes won’t just admit she was wrong about Caitlin Clark, instead deciding to minimize her legacy so Caitlin looks less impressive. Jordan is happy for Justin Fields, despite him being a Steeler, and his continued growth. It’s amazing what being a part of a real franchise can do for a player’s confidence and ability. It’s been three games, but Fields already looks like a different player.

If you like the show, please share it with friends and family and leave a five-star review. If you want to keep up with the show you can subscribe to the Land-Grant Podcast Network Feed, where new episodes drop every Thursday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: APR 13 Ohio State Spring Game

Photo by Jason Mowry/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Your (almost) daily dose of good-natured, Ohio State banter.

Everybody knows that one of the best parts of being a sports fan is debating and dissecting the most (and least) important questions in the sporting world with your friends. So, we’re bringing that to the pages of LGHL with our favorite head-to-head column: You’re Nuts.

In You’re Nuts, two LGHL staff members will take differing sides of one question and argue their opinions passionately. Then, in the end, it’s up to you to determine who’s right and who’s nuts.

Today’s Question: What are you hoping to learn about Ohio State before conference play?

Jami’s Take: Brandon Inniss, Wide Receiver

Sophomore wide receiver Brandon Inniss hasn’t gotten to do a whole lot of receiving on offense this season, with a corps that includes veteran star Emeka Egbuka, freshman standout Jeremiah Smith, and steady force Carnell Tate.

Through the first three games, Inniss has had four receptions for 49 yards, averaging 12.3 yards per carry. Instead, Inniss has stepped up on special teams, helping his team in an area where they desperately needed it.

Setting aside a rocky special teams effort against the Marshall Thundering Herd this past weekend, Inniss has looked solid as a punt returner, returning nine punts for 87 yards—an average of 9.7 yards per return—with a long return of 36 yards.

Sure, he has his first muffed punt of the season against Marshall and it almost resulted in a turnover, but you try looking directly into the sun and catching a football. Let me know how that works out for you. The play was admittedly not great, but it happens, and in this case, it’s no sweat because a (lucky and questionable) flag against Marshall forced the Herd to re-kick the ball.

But overall, Inniss has demonstrated his prowess on a special teams unit that was, at this time last year, a major Achilles Heel for Ohio State. In the Buckeyes’ Week 1 game against Akron, Inniss returned four punts for 60 yards. In contrast, the team logged only 75 punt return yards in the entirety of the 2023 season. He singlehandedly exceeded that within three games.

He has marked the beginning of more aggressive special teams play for the Buckeyes with his “get the ball and go” approach, one which has benefitted the team in more ways than one. For starters, it’s proven challenging for opponents to defend, but more importantly, it’s prevented the ball from rolling, which can cost a decent amount of yards per roll and affect the Buckeyes’ field position.

But perhaps more importantly, his fearless and aggressive running style bodes well for how he would perform on offense. He has managed to elude opponents with his speed and excellent route running, and while he hasn’t been perfect, he has shown us enough of his potential that I feel confident he has what it takes to become a star on offense for the team, with just a little more time to mature into the role.

While it would be nice to see Inniss take more snaps on offense, especially as Egbuka, Smith and Tate start to feel the wear and tear of the extended season, I don’t expect him to start any time soon.

Still, he’s proven he can be an impact player, not just on special teams but on offense as well. In only the handful of reps he’s taken this season, he’s looked confident and dangerous, capped off by a beautiful 19-yard reception on 4th-and-8 that Inniss and quarterback Will Howard made look easy.

These flashes have shown his poise and explosiveness on offense, something that leads me to believe we’re going to hear his name a lot more in the future.

Allowing him to take more reps so our three more utilized receivers can rest up could help develop some additional depth for the Buckeyes and give Inniss the chance to gain valuable experience with the offense while keeping the other three healthy.

That same experience could prove vital for the Buckeyes as a whole next season, but it could also give Inniss the exact kind of reps that allow him to come into his own and set him up for a breakout season in 2025.

Matt’s Take: James Peoples

With guys in your position room like Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson, it is difficult to imagine a true freshman even having that many opportunities to shine, but Buckeye rookie James Peoples has done just that in his limited action thus far.

The San Antonio native has only carried the ball 22 times so far this season, but those rushing attempts have resulted in 112 yards and 2 touchdowns. He is averaging a very solid 5.1 yards per carry average which is fairly good for a guy only getting into the game behind the second and third-team offensive line. He’s also had two runs of 10+ yards already.

But his performance can’t be boiled down to just traditional stats, on his 22 carries, he has forced seven missed tackles and has shown a combination of speed and power that make him incredibly fun to watch. While having only played in three collegiate football games, Peoples has proven to be impressively dynamic.

Due to transfers in and out, the former top-115 recruit has already found himself as the Buckeyes’ No. 3 running back. While I would not expect him to push for much more playing time than he’s already getting this season — barring major blowouts or anything unforeseen happening to Q or Trey — he will likely get enough carries to build up a decent level of experience to take the RB1 slot in 2025 after this year’s headliners depart for the NFL.

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament East Regional-Connecticut vs San Diego State

Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images

The former Oakland and San Diego State player brings scoring and versatility to the Buckeyes this season.

Even though it is September and fans are locked into college football, the fall also means that college basketball is right around the corner.

From now until the start of the hoops season in early November, we will be doing player previews and team previews for all the players on the men’s basketball team and the new-look Big Ten Conference.

The Micah Parrish File

Name: Micah Parrish
Position: Forward
Class: Fifth Year
Previous School: River Rouge/Hillcrest Prep High School / Oakland / San Diego State
Hometown: Detroit, Mich.
Weight: 205 lbs
Height: 6-foot-6

Breakdown

Micah Parrish comes to Ohio State as a fifth-year senior. Parrish is a versatile wing defender, a decent scorer, and a capable shooter who will slide in as an immediate starter at the three.

The forward spent his first two seasons of college basketball at Oakland and his third and fourth seasons at San Diego State. He was named to the Continental Tire Main Event All-Tournament Team in 2023, the Horizon League All-Defensive Team in 2022, and the Horizon League All-Freshman Team in 2021.

He has appeared in 135 games over four seasons and has recorded five career double-doubles — four with Oakland and one with San Diego State. In his two seasons at Oakland, he appeared in 59 games with 57 starts, averaging 10.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.3 assists. He transferred to San Diego State in the summer of 2022 and played in 76 games over two seasons, making 37 starts. As an Aztec, he averaged 8.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.

He brings an added layer of experience to the Buckeyes, playing in all nine of San Diego State’s NCAA Tournament games over his two seasons, including the national championship game vs. UConn in 2023.

He started 36 of his 37 games as a senior in 2023-24, averaging 9.3 points and 4.1 rebounds before transferring to Ohio State.

Expected Role

There shouldn’t be much discussion around Parrish. He will be a starter on the 2024-25 Ohio State team and will likely play the third or fourth most minutes behind only Bruce Thornton, Meechie Johnson, and maybe Aaron Bradshaw, but we will discuss the Kentucky transfer next week.

Parrish brings scoring, defense, versatility, and experience to Jake Diebler and the coaching staff. That is why he is so valuable on both ends of the floor and can give 25-30 minutes a game. The guard duo of Johnson and Thornton will handle a lot of the scoring, but Parrish could slide into the third or fourth option on that end as well.

Parrish was a slightly overlooked transfer this offseason with Johnson coming back and former five-star recruits Bradshaw and Sean Stewart coming into the program, but Parrish could very well go down as the most important transfer into Columbus with his value on both sides of the ball and what he brings as a wing defender.
