Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

Football: It looks like the debate really isn't one.

Buckeye fans have been debating who OSU's probable starter at QB might be in the Texas game, given that Troy Smith will not be eligible for the season-opener with Miami of Ohio. According to quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels, if things simply go the way they have been going, Smith would probably get the starting nod at quarterback against the Longhorns.

More to follow later this evening.

Whoah, Nelly! I may be missing something here, but if true, this could be one of the stupidest coaching comments I've ever heard. Let's hope JT clarifies "what Coach Daniels actually meant to say" in a big hurry.

How would you feel if you were Justin Zwick today -- four days into Spring ball? Thanks for the vote of confidence, Coach! It's only Spring -- not too late to transfer.

Or those ESPN hacks, Trev Albert and Markie May? They must be licking each other's chops. They'll have a field day with Troy's return as a starter 'after a two-game slap on the wrist.'

Or the ABC crew? The Buckeyes' share of the pre-game show will now be devoted to last year's scandals. With Zwick as the announced starter (even if he only plays the first series) at least there would have been some footage of him playing through pain to beat Ok St. Now, the entire pre-game, 12 solid minutes before a huge national audience, will be divided equally between Vince Young's Heisman candidacy and Troy Smith's willful, blatant violation of the most basic rule in college sports. Nice contrast.

I'll defer to the coaches on whether this makes football sense, but as a PR move for the team and for the university, it's absolutely absurd. Start him? Fine! But announce it five months ahead of time? Ridiculous!

This sounds to me like a comment from Coach Daniels that wouldn't get the seal of approval from JT. It will be interesting to hear his reaction, which should come out by tomorrow.

There's a BN premium article about it, but I suppose we can wait a few hours till the O-Zone gets their story up. Nothing like eliminating one of the hot topics to discuss...
The BN Premium article really doesn't say anything, there's a lot of good quotes by Smith showing his character but it really doesn't shed any light on when he'll see the field.

Daniels could also be looking to motivate Zwick to work harder to lock up the starting spot.

In the news interview today Daniels said:
1) Zwick has emerged as a leader
2) There are more plays designed for TGII at QB
3) He said Boeckman wasn't far behind... the D said he had one heck of an arm

Seriously?? That's a joke, right?

That's like being the older brother in a 4 person family. Your younger brother misbehaves and is put on timeout. Your parents then proceed to tell EVERYONE that they think your younger brother is more promising than you.

That is demeaning in every sense of the word.
