I think we need to evaluate JZ more fairly, on both the positive and negative end. He has a lot of talent and showed some toughness and touch while injured in the Alamo Bowl. Also, he had no running game to freeze the pass rush, and the OL looked like they were fresh out of high school when he was still the starter.
However I also think we need to remember the leadership Smith brought to this team. Yes he was blessed by the emergence of Ginn & Gonzo, an improved OL, and a couple of easier games (IU, PSU) to allow those factors and himself to gel and make progress. But he did turn around a team that was dead in the water. We should not have lost to NW, could not support our defense against Wisconsin, and I don't even need to mention what happened in Iowa.
TS revitalized a slumping team with his enthusiasm and drive to win, and players seemed to rally around that. He was willing to sacrifice his body and scramble for the tough yards, and then lower his helmet against the defenders. He managed to get the ball to Ginn more than JZ could (again, partially due to Ginn's route improvement), and made a number of timely passes to make us list Gonzo as the third threat thru the air.
I really think that all three QBs are talented. TB has received rave reviews, but JZ was popular with coaches last year IIRC. Until his incident, TS was far and away the leader of this team.
I really don't think any of us know for sure what is going to happen. Hopefully the addition of Boone to an already vastly improved OL will be enough for our rushing attack. Hopefully MWells will be ready to go, Pittman's success will continue, and Haw will live up to at least some of his billing and be able to handle the "big back" carries. But realize that our rushing attack might not be as good as we want it to be (at least not right away), and at first we still might need a more mobile QB.
These are all things we can't understand. We also don't know the dynamics of which QB the players rally around the most (I'm sure each has their followers, but which has the most overall support). We don't know whether Smith has looked impressive in practices in addition to playing good in games (there was no comparison, Zwick was hurt and TB was RS-ing).
But by all means, we have very little to discuss earnestly. So enjoy reading this post, and still consider there to be clear favorites for the QB job so that we can all disagree with you. :)

Interesting question... I was being sarcastic earlier when I made fun of the newer posters with this inside info about TB (no hard feelings guys, and I didn't ding you, fyi) and I said Ted Ginn would play QB.
But if he were doing an end around, and then right as a defender closed on him, he threw the ball up and over the defender's head (a 7-10 yard lob) and run and get it himself? Basically he would go from running, to throwing a lob pass, and then being the receiver that catches up to the ball. Technically, if he timed it right wouldn't the defender be prevented from hitting him (roughing the passer) or impeding his path to the ball (pass interference?).
I realize this is an absurd play, I'm just imagining it could work if there was one linebacker who was somewhat stationary... plus it would make a dang cool highlight for his heisman campaign.
