Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

Zwick and Smith are both better in the spread. Contrary to popular misconception. Zwick was not the problem with our offense early in the year. Develpment of Gonzo, Ginn, and the entire o-line is why our offense suddenly improved. As for this "conversation". There's no fucking way that two Buckeye players felt the need to let you in on their little secret, unless they're a couple of scout team guys that have been catching balls from Boeckman for the last year. It's funny how they gave you insider info on who the starting QB would be next year, but either didn't know what the situation with Troy was, or were suddenly too tight lipped to tell you about it.

It was actually quite surprising how frank the players were about the subject. None of the three of us non players in the vehicle pressed about what Smith did and neither of them seemed to care that much to tell us. Both of the players were in town for autograph signing and we got to take them back to Columbus and I'll leave it at that.

Let me also add that they did not say Boeckman would be the starter just that he had better skills to get the job done.

I could be wrong, but I thought that I heard JT mention during the pregame or postgame interview that "TS was still the guy". Again I could be wrong, or I could have just misunderstood what he said. Why else would him and Geiger be so anxious to get him reinstated so quickly. If he is just going to sit the bench then why not make an example of him? Again I don't know I am just taking something I thought I heard, and something that makes since to me and putting it together.

What the fuck is "infatically"?

You are correct...in that you are wrong. Tressel never has said Smith is still the man. The only thing close to that is he did say in a sound byte during the Alamo Bowl that as of Dec 30th part of his punishment is behind him.

Zwick will be the starter for the opener, and barring injury or an abhorrent performance therein, will be the starter for the Texas game.

Infatically = emphatically .... if we were to do this for every thread on the Planet (or message boards, in general), we would never have time to write anything worth reading..."g-buck" also said "very unique," which is redundant. Nothing can be a greater degree of "unique" than something that is, technically, unique.

I don't know if "g-buck" is full of it or not, but players are not coaches, and I am pretty sure that Boekman has the skills and size to impress not a few players. Obviously, Smith was picked in the spring game over Zwick by one segment of players, so it is not unfathomable that someone thinks Boekman is the man. He has never shown himself to be inferior to either QB from every report we have heard.

I would be excited if Boekman showed himself to be a star in the making. Should be interesting this spring, for sure. I agree with Mili, though, in that it is Zwick's position based on what we know right now.

The only thing I can think of that would give this credibility is if Boeckman were picked over Zwick in the Spring Game.

The coaches, including JT, have repeatedly praised how well TB is coming along, so it wouldn't be a huge shock if he were to compete with Zwick for the starting job, but after the great effort he gave in the Alamo Bowl, I'd have to think that it's Zwick's spot to lose. I"d also have to think that the respect he's earned from his teammates for playing hurt would count for something.

Spelling has never been a strong suit if mine as you can tell. The guys that we got to talk to looked at Boeckman as a darkhorse for sure. They were both at OSU when Zwick was being recruited and still couldn't believe the way he was about getting #12. Some of their feelings may go way back. The purpose of my thread was to find out if anyone other than a couple of players felt that Boeckman may be the man.

Has Smith been re-instated to the team? If not, and he isn't before then, will he even be allowed to participate in spring ball?

I would think missing this time would hurt his chances of being the starter on opening weekend, or for Texas, if his suspension includes Miami, as some have speculated.

I have heard Boeckman has done some impressive things on the scout team. I have no idea who the starter will be on opening day, but I just thought I would throw it out there. I do see this as a 3 person race for starter.
how do you guys see this as a 3 person race for starter????? we have the following qb's eligible:

zwick
boeckman

who is this magical 3rd guy? smith? not bloody likely. how can he be in a race to play in a game he is ineligible to play in??? guys seriously here, we are not going to play 2 qb's against texas!!!

expectations are going to be high this year, tressel knows this. he knows game #2 will be in the top 3 biggest games of the year list counting whatever bowl game we may/may not end up in. there is no way in hell we walk into game 2 with a qb controversy. there is no way in hell a guy who hasn't seen game time this year will start in game 2. so much can change in the course of a year. new faces, new offensive schemes, new plays, new... my god everything can change. so while smith will likely be able to practice with the team. he will have 0 game experience on the year going into texas. the whole point of playing a creme puff your first game is to get your guys jelling for the real competition. smith isn't gonig to have that going into texas.

this isn't the nfl, you can't just take a game or 2 off and be ok continueing on the season. one game IS your season. there is no margin for error here. the only chance smith has to get on the field is for zwick to suicide himself. the qb spot is zwick's to loose. boeckman has a shot to take it from him but thats it. smith, barring something horrific, has 0 shot till mid season at the earliest.

the only qb controversy that will exist at tOSU going into game 2, barring something horrible happening with zwick, will be in the media and the minds of some fans. but it flat out isn't going to exist anywhere else. it can't, there simply isn't room for that type of foolishness.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I wont debate the merits of who SHOULD start, and why one guy is better than the other, because I'm tired of beating that dead horse, but if Smith is eligible for spring practice I just don't see JT punishing him for a mistake he made almost a year ago. I think we will see Zwick play only until Smith is eligible to start again. Again who knows, its all speculation.

I have heard all of the rumblings that TB has impressed. Hell even Herbie mentioned him when they were talking about the QB controversy durring the OKSate game.

I expect to see his name thrown around as a potential starter more than we might think.
