Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

He didn't pick the worst possible time to do something stupid (assuming he only took money once). He just got turned in at the worst possible time. If he had gotten caught last spring when it happened and had to sit out the first 2 games last season, it probably wouldn't have turned out any differently for him except he would have started the bowl game.
blah! listen to what i mean, not what i say foolish type person :p.

yeah, thats what i ment hehe. the situation as a whole could not have happened at a worse time.

though in retrospect. if it had come out just before MoC's claims. how different might things have turned out? would MoC's claims have been believed outright because they were based upon known fact at the time of release? troy gets busted for taking money. MoC then comes out and says tOSU is dirty... would espin have claimed victory over tOSU by now? hard to measure how differntly things would have turned out had they been different. in some ways we are probably very lucky that MoC was publicly proven to be a waste of oxygen twice before this came out. the timing of troy getting nailed probably helped us more than it hurt. troy however is a different story.

From the time Troy Smith came to tOSU I could not picture him leading the offense. I wanted to see Zwick win the job and stay there for three years.
Now, any complications aside, I can't imagine how this can even be questioned considering Smith's game against Michigan. The kid was simply brilliant. He had a game for the ages and showed the ability to not only run but to be an effective passer.
I truly believe that his game versus scUM was not a fluke but rather a glimpse of things to come.

i just find it shocking to see so many people believe with such conviction that ts will be/should be eligible to play against miami (OH). seems how you play against scum determines what you can and can't do in life in their eyes *shrug*.
You shouldn't. John Cooper got fired because he couldn't beat scUM. TS handled the pressure of the scUM game very well. I think it goes back to the fact that people have better memories overall of the games that TS started in then they do the games that JZ started in. What I like about TS is that he doesn't lose much at all in the face of a pass rush, and he throws great on the run. Maybe Zwick throws better in the pocket, but when you play the really good teams, you wont be able to sit in the pocket all day. Look at Jason White, he was great when he didn't have to move. Make him move and he looks like a high schooler. That is the difference between a National title and Oklahomo.

I think TS can easily win the starting QB job over spring and fall practices. Any QB could. He is allowed to practice with the team, and therefore has just as good a chance as any other QB to win the starting job. If he isn't reinstated by opening day, then he sits opening day....but that's just a glorified scrimmage, anyways. I'm not saying TS will be the starter next year, but I will say he could be. If he is the best QB, and he wins the job, I think JT will say what's past is past, the kid's been punished, so let's put it behind us and play some football...and TS will play.

Troy Smith is a leader. This was shown in the second half of the season when he took a -lets face it- pretty much drowning team and led them to a winning season. He's exciting, also. BUT what about team leadership? How can this team look up to a player that flagrantly broke the rules? He's not starting in '05, and if JZ starts and wins, I can't see the team rallying behind TS for the rest of the season.

I'm a big TS fan, but team leadership could be the difference in a college football rivalry game, as y'all know as well as I do that college football is driven on PRIDE and EMOTION and DRIVE. Team Leadership is the key, and for that reason, I think JZ should start.

Michigan vs Mobile Quarterback

Given the atheletes up north I think it will be years before the maize and blue can defend a mobile quarterback. I think Smith gurantees a win of Michigan. I don't know about the rest of the season but TS will get his Meatchicken hat trick if he plays.

The ubiquitous debate, it seems to invade every third thread. Two questions: i) is there a poll on which player BP posters hope/think will be the long term starter?, and ii) am I wrong to believe that one side of this debate has a much stronger tendency than the other to make harshly derogatory comments about their less preferred QB? Lock and load, fellas.

When you think about it, this is actually a really complicated issue. Some of us want to give Zwick another chance. Some of us felt betrayed by Smith's actions. While others want Smith to get another chance, maybe even give him preferential treatment because of his athletic talent.
.
<r0ck3tm4nn 's="" opinion="" time=""> The bottom line is regardless of who is the starter, I will support him 100%, just like any of us should. We have a good predicament on our hands - both QB's are solid. If I were to use the dichotomy I just came up with in the previous paragraph, I think I fit under the "preferential treatment" catagory, even though I don't really want to admit to giving him special treatment. I was dissapointed with Smith when I heard what he did. But now that its almost spring, it sounds like he really has his act together and should be given a shot at the starting position during the Texas game. Smith is a year older than me, and if I were in his position, I wouldn't even know what to do honestly.

I think a poll would be neat, but like I just said, we're going to support our starting QB regardless, so why even go into it? Besides, competition for the starting QB spot isn't going to hurt the individual players, its just going to make them both better, which will benefit the team.

yeah but the thing is, didn't all of that stuff with Smith and his suspension occur like even before the season started??? if not i know it was definitely some time before things really started going with the 2004 season and even though it was a mistake it did happen a while ago. im pretty convinced with Tressel's guidance this kid will be fine as far as his attitude and off-the-field issues go.
