Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

Yertle said:
I think Daniel's comments are a good thing. If Zwick truly needs to continue to step up his game, he needs to be told honestly. Furthermore, I don't see any reason to keep that stuff private. He didn't ridicule Zwick, he praised Smith.

Will someone please post what Daniels actually said? All we've got so far is some vague allusion to what he said from O-Zone. I'm not ready to leap to any conclusions based on that.

We don't know what he said. They're gonna post it later on The O-Zone. They've done a good job marketing tho, as we're all chomping at the bit wondering.

The things he has been quoted as saying are (paraphrased):
a) "Zwick has shown himself to be a leader"
b) "Boeckman isn't far behind those two"

I read this as simply a statement that TS is a little ahead in the competition right now. It's no indication that he has the job locked up. There was a purpose in those comments, what that purpose is I don't know. Whether its to motivate JZ, reassure TS, or give UT something to think about, we'll never know. Regardless of what is said today, I am quite certain that all 3 QB's are getting a fair shake.

Something that needs to be pointed out is that Zwick needs to be reminded that he still has to earn that starting spot. Smith was the leader of the team and his last performance was one of the greatest ever in a buckeye uniform. So regardless of what us obsessed buckeye posters think, Zwick still has a lot to prove.

He showed a lot of grit against OkState, but anyone would have won that game with the way our D performed. And while his injury isn't his fault, a lot of the drives ended in FGs against a meager D. And yes, he had a lot of things working against him earlier in the season, but that still is the best we've seen from him.

He was a talented recruit, and JT and others saw something in him that earned him the starting spot. He had a rough beginning, and was hardly tested in the Alamo Bowl. He has shown leadership, and spurts of skill. So I think a little bit of a challenge will only be a good thing for JZ. This is a good way for him to learn to make the QB position his rather than always looking over his shoulder at smith.

That's like being the older brother in a 4 person family. Your younger brother misbehaves and is put on timeout. Your parents then proceed to tell EVERYONE that they think your younger brother is more promising than you.

So, Oneshot, you are saying that if a kid is punished with a five minute time out after it is over his parents should contiue to punish him is subtle ways? Any psychotics in your family - because that is how I would go about producing one.

If Daniels comment was - as originally suggested - simply that Smith is the better QB right now why on earth would he not start if that were still the case once his punishment is OVER. Of course, things can change during the spring, the fall, and the Miami game.

Thus the motivation.

I'm the psychotic in MY family.

But no, I wasn't focusing on the punishment point, I was focusing on the well... strangeness of praising the punished son. I think THATS how you raise a psycho. :)

(No, I'm not saying TS is the punished son, I was using more of a comparison to the #1 spot vs. the #2 spot).

I dunno about you guys but I'm glad to hear that Boeckman is coming on! I like his potential! As for the Texas game I think Zwick will most likely start, but if Smith gets in and makes plays I doubt we see Zwick again that year.... Which ever one makes plays will be the starter (obviously).. On the other note I have tickets to this game, and it will be by far the biggest game I've gone to! 2nd game in 2 years! Only been to Two....

It's all premature speculation. Quite frankly I don't care anymore, the only thing I want is for our best QB to see the field. If it's Smith play him, if its TB or JZ, play them. If JT feels that Smith has served his suspension to his satisfaction, that is good enough for me. I know that I was one calling for Smith off the team, but I was wrong. I trust the coaching staff more than my own deviated fixations. :tongue2:

most punishments in life go far beyond the initial consequence. would you have a problem with a convicted sex offender moving in next door? they served their time right? therefor they should be viewed the exact same way they were before they were charged with anything. so you'd be willing to let this person babysit your children or work the late shift with your wife? im sure you would have been willing to trust that person before you knew of their crimes... so why would that have any impact after they have served their punishment?

no, smith's actions hardly compair. but the example isn't a compairson, simply to prove a point. everything you do in life alters the way others deal with/perceive you. which includes levels of trust. if im your boss, my level of trust in you often is directly proportional to the level of responsibility i am willing to give you. if you loose or damage that trust not only could there be immediate consequences. demotion, termination, write ups, etc... but more often than not, your initial punishment will bleed into how your boss deals with you and the roles you are permitted to play in the future. right wrong or indifferent, thats just the way life works.

the football world works the same way. all players bring a list of potential rewards and potential risks. be they injury, attitude, off the field problems, etc.. as well as positive attributes. its all risk vrs. reward. do the rewards smith brings to the table outweigh the risks? thats a question for the coaching staff and i have 100% confidence they will make the right call.

If I were the coaching staff, I'd stay vauge on the whole QB situation until September 10th. We don't want Zwick transfering out. He was only a Sophomore last year, showed a lot of promise in the bowl game, and has a good chance at developing into a great QB. If Smith can't play for whatever reason, it will be a huge bonus to know you have Zwick there. It'll also be interesting to see what happens in the Miami game. If Boeckman plays or maybe even starts, or what Zwick does.

Even if Zwick does transfer, am I right in the understanding that he would only get to play one year at the school he transfered to. If this is the case, it may not be worth it to him, he may have a better shot at playing at tOSU.
