Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

You're Definatly right Cornerback6.... Texas has a huge problem to deal with right now!! Two different Qb's to worry about. Either way I think we win tho! haha

What Troy did WAS wrong, but he didn't lose his position like Daniels said. I watched the Alamo bowl last night and Zwick looked good, but man I don't know what Smith would've done to them? Because we all know Okie St. had troubles with the Vince Young. I hope Smith does start against Texas, because I think that would make the crowd that much more crazy. Especially since his last game in the horse shoe was a memerable one.

IF I was Zwick I'd get my but in gear, but by no means is this QB situation over. I really think either way our offense will be explosive but with Smith he just adds another demension. Also I always knew when I was in High School when someone gave me praise I always wanted to TRY so much harder to really impress them so don't be surprised if Smith takes this as modivation also and really knocks their socks off...

The best to Troy and Justin this Spring.....

As proven by last year, the #2 guy is one play away from being the starter! Before this coming season is over, we will need all 3 QBs! All the QBs and the team know this. This mind set is important!

Okie State had real troubles with VY, but only after they took a 35-7 lead late in the first half in Austin. Final score was 56-35 Texas. I saw the game on TV, it was quite a turnaround, to say the least.

Even if Troy Smith does start the game, I would expect Ohio State to rotate Zwick in and out as well, giving Texas a hard time with two seperate and very different QB's in there.
If Smith starts, we'll never see Zwick unless TS is struggling. Zwick hasn't proven himself to be a whole lot more reliable than Smith anyway. In 2003, McMullen was clearly a better passer than Krenzel, yet JT stuck by his starter. JT will do the same if Smith is in fact the leader of this team as Daniels has implied.

I don't know how much there is to analyze here. If Zwick comes out against Miami and lights it up, I would bet you see him start against Texas and stay in as long as he does well. If he plays average or poor, then Smith will probably start and stay in as long as he does well. IMO it's as simple as that.

I guess it depends on how Zwick does against Miami, if he does have a good game, I can see him getting the nod as a starter, and even if Troy Smith starts, I can see Zwick getting some playing time...unless Smith is having a great game out there.

Troy is the starter, he did not lose his job for performance, I like Zwick also, but unless Zwick comes out that first game and looks like John Elway.......Smith will be the starter in game 2.

Tress will not rotate quarterbacks unless performance dictates it.

well either way though this is one hell of a problem to have. I hope Zwick can get fired up over this and come out guns a' blazing but also as we all know I'm a Smith Fan so I also would hope that Smith does indeed get his shot.

Ummm.. not to be an ass here... but I think you "If Zwick lights it up against Miami, he'll start" people need to check out the "Joint a day" thread.

Let's forget all this "other stuff" for a minute. Do you think for a nanosecond that if Smith was out for the Miami game because of an injury, but completely healed by the time Texas rolled around that Zwick would start? No freaking way.

Now.. there's plenty of practice between now and then, and Zwick could step up and change the coaches' mind.. but... To use a Tresselism "If the game were tomorrow and Smith was available...."

Bottom line is... the coaches are going to use the best players because they owe it to the other players.... if you want to get into further discourse on disciplinary stuff regarding Smith, fine... BUT... if Tress feels Troy has "done his time" by the Texas Game... he's playing.

I know this has likely been said before in other threads, but we must all remember that Smith is looking great to us all now in part b/c of two reasons: (1) his best performance was at the end of last year and (2) his best performance was against scUM. I am fully willing to admit that he was phenomenal in the Michigan game--I was there and some of the scrambling he did to get himself out of possible sacks and turning the plays into positive yardage were unbelievable (and I'm sure that watching the game on TV didn't allow the viewer to fully appreciate what he did, considering you cannot see the whole field at once). That being said, we must all remember that he made some mistakes as well, particularly in the red zone at Purdue. I'm not saying that Smith's better than Zwick or Zwick's better than Smith. I just think that we should put Smith's performance last year in its proper perspective, notwithstanding his great performance against scUM.

Zwick has two games to hang his hat on, Marshall (in which he was great in the first half, poor in the 2nd half) and the Alamo Bowl (he was gutsy, but he didn't have a great day passing the ball). Smith's Purdue performance was somewhat comparable to Zwick's marshall performance in that both made big plays but made big mistakes too. The Alamo Bowl showed a lot of leadership by Zwick but he still had an average game against an awful D. I don't think anyone needs to explain how the UM game compares to the Alamo Bowl.

Smith's two best performances were against much tougher defenses. Yes UM can't stop a mobile QB, but they do a decent job shutting down the pass. Their DL got into the backfield a number of times in the first half and Smith scrambled for yardage or bought time to find Ginn for first down after first down. And he passed the ball beautifully time after time to receivers that were pretty well covered.

Zwick has plenty of excuses for why he didn't do very well at the beginning of the season, and they are legitimate ones. However he doesn't have as many compelling reasons for why he should be the starter.

Smith was finally allowed to create plays against purdue and he played well but made mistakes. In the game right after that (which I'm sure the week of practice focused on turnovers) he had zero turnovers and arguably the greatest UM performance of all time.

Couldn't of said it better- Smith IMO played great in alot of games last year but we mainly remember him for his last game. Smith IMO is a good QB and has made mistakes most recent were off the field problems. The thing about the Michigan game that made me know for sure he was our guy was when he was in trouble he just threw the ball away outta bounds instead of forcing it down field or making a mistake. Smith has shown that he can learn from his mistakes, and while I'm sure Zwick can also I don't know if he can at Smiths rate.

I remember last year coming into the opener the talk was that Smith wasn't as good at reading the defense and making changes? What was that about? because to me it seems to be the opposite?
