Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

His downfall was that he was shaking like a leaf. Chill out Zwicky !

How did you come up with this conclusion? Were you on the side line? In the huddle?
The point is that you actually have no way of knowing that he was "shaking like a leaf".

For a kid that hasn't been in a game time situation for two years I think he did an absolutely outstanding job.
One INT was due to either the ball slipping out of his hand or his hand being hit.
One INT was a tipped ball which was partly due to his own doing because threw the pass a bit too hard.
The fumble was something that happens to all QB's at sometime or another.
The only thing you could possible say on that play is he needs to feel pressure better and react to it accordingly.

You cannot grade Smith on this performance.
He made on nice TD pass and scrambled for Ten yards once.
He simply did not play enough to grade him properly.

I thought this was pretty obvious with all the dropped balls, but he did pretty well overall. He'll calm down -- I'm not too worried.

ashland,

You are determined to make me into a Zwick basher today. Won't happen !

Can we even mention the fact that he made some mistakes ?

You asked me how I know that he was shaking like a leaf... put it this way, I hope he was because if he was not, he's not very good.

The mistakes he made were that of nerves but I seen his potential through the rough spots. I don't know how your taken these statements as attacks on Zwick.

Serious question: Are you a friend or relative of Zwick ? If so then I'm sorry if I said something to harsh, but I feel like I was very fair.

there is simply no way to compare the play of the two quarterbacks today....sure zwick needs to learn to hang onto the ball better...his hands were sweating and he was having real difficulty there...that needs to be addressed....

but...he also led a very nice offensive attack today....not bad for a first start....i dont know what in the hell people were expecting from a first start....it was great....

as to smith...nothing was asked of him and he got to "run the show" when cincitucky was already beaten down and mentally out of the game.....

i think both qb's played better than SHOULD have been expected......

Zwick started out a tad tentative and then played pretty well the next few series. He then gradually went downhill with both his poise and his accuracy. Smith was the exact opposite...he started off shaky and improved as the game progressed.

As I said in another thread, I can deal with a pseudo-2QB system, at least until Zwick gets really comfortable. I like having Smith as a ready replacement for Zwick...my respect for Troy grew greatly today.

more was asked out of zwick today (in terms of throwing the ball) than was ever asked of ck.....

if ck was the qb today he would have pulled it down and ran the ball 15 times for 80 yards and the bucks would have won 13-6....

No ashland !

That is not what I mean. The mistakes Zwick made stand out to people when thinking back on the game. Smith was quiet, did his little job and was done. He looked very relazed while Zwick looks surprised at things the defense did. I'm watching the game again right now and I'm telling you, Zwick's nerves were a wreck. Smith cool head will give people the impression that he had it all together but I attribute that to zero pressure on Smith.

But like I said "it made him (look) better", it didn't actually make him better.

You are reading what you want to read. Your taking me out of context and it seems like your doing it intentionally so we'll just end this conversation.

It didn't even make him look better. My God, Smith threw 3 passes and missed a wide open Roy hall on his ten yard scamper and you say he looked better.
Like I said...You are ridiculous.

People like you may focus on his mistakes. I tend to focus on the things he did well.
It's the same shit as it was with Krenzel. People bitched and moaned about the things he didn't do well and failed to mention all the things he did very well. Not to mention winning all the time.

I agree with a few things others have stated:

Smith looked fine, but given the situations he was in I don't feel I saw anything much to judge. His pass to Holmes showed great touch, but other than that it was a big incomplete. I'll also give the team a pass on those run plays for Smith as it was obvious, I assume, to Cinci that he was running-- not much could be expected.

I also thought Zwick started to look a little shaky later in the game, and I thought that before I read this thread, so unless a bunch of us are crazy there must have been something. The ducks and drop may have been due to grip, which as others said should be correctable. He also made one throw, maybe two, that scared me-- off the back foot and to nobody in particular, lofting through the air. BUT, overall, he made excellent decisions and one bad choice on a throw is certainly nothing to complain about, especially from a new QB. I thought he looked great for his first game; he did much better than I could hope for. Zwick showed me enough command, poise, and skill to make me completely happy with him as our full time QB. (the throw that scared me the most was into the endzone and wasn't one of the interceptions, btw.) Oh, and the ITs were explained away by somebody earlier and I agree with them.

We are blessed with these two QBs. I am itchy and excited to see what Smith can do, but I think I have to agree with Sloopy that we need a distributor to take advantage of our athletes - Zwick certainly looked capable of doing just that.

quotes from my first post on this thread:

"zwick showed a quick release, great field vision and he made good decisions"

"Zwick has the stuff"

I guess those aren't nice enough. What did he show that I didn't mention ?
