Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

“That happened Tuesday afternoon,” he said. “He was just out in the open field and he was blocking and someone fell in behind him and (he broke) one of the small bones in his lower leg. That’s a shame. I thought he was really coming along. I thought he made a couple plays (in the scrimmage) and was starting to feel comfortable. It’s disappointing when that happens. He’ll be out for the year.

Question for everyone.. it comes later.

I was just listening to Spielman on 1460.

He made (more or less) the following comment:

[Justin Zwick] "will be the starter and I'm hearing rumors out of practice that Todd Boeckman is making a push to be the #2" (That's mor or less what he said).

Now he really didn't give a reason, or source... but let's assume there is a certain amount of truth to the statement.

Let's also assume that what this means is that Boeckman is just getting that good that fast, not an indictment of Troy Smith. (Greg Frey was on a little later and said he really like the look of all 3).

So I guess my question is:

If Zwick is #1, and Boeckman is a very close #3, Do you use that depth luxury to try to get Troy Smith on the field at other positions in addition to some reps at QB?

Thoughts?

Tressel has said that Zwick will start, but Smith will see a lot of action as well (at QB). I have never heard JT mention playing Boeckman. The only reason not to redshirt Boeckman this year is if Zwick or Smith (more likely both) get injured.

Having said that, I don't know where you would fit Smith in. We have a myriad of WR's, two (hopefully) stellar frosh RB's, and I certainly don't see him playing D. I can see him catching a TD from Ginn, maybe....trick play? To answer your question, nope, I think he'll stay at QB.

I have never heard JT mention playing Boeckman.

Then you missed some of his comments yesterday... He didnt' say that he would play... more that he isn't ruling out the possibility.. that may be just to keep him focused.

BUT... let me rephrase the question then:

If Zwick is #1, and Boeckman is a very close #3, Do you use that depth luxury to try to get Troy Smith on the field at other positions [if he's one of the best athletes to put out there] in addition to some reps at QB, both as the backup, and more 'creative'/mismatch situations?

Edit... Too quick on the trigger.

Zwick vs. Smith

Zwick displayed a very quick release, great field vision and good decision making. His arm strength was average but his handle on the ball is horrible. Ducks and Fumbles. Fixable faults though. His downfall was that he was shaking like a leaf. Chill out Zwicky !

Smith wasn't asked to do as much so he had less pressure and it showed. He looked like he was playing flag football in the park. Very cool and collected. And he is showing some touch to go along with his high powered arm.

Zwick has the stuff but today the cooler head made Smith look better. Zwick is still the man, he just needs to work on his grip, spiral and nerves.

I agree.....

One thing, another game like this and (i hate to say it) there is going to be a QB controversy.

However, we are blessed twiced. It looks like both these guys are capable of being very, very good.......

The TD pass that Smith threw was a great one. However, I don't want a running QB under Center. This is Ohio State. There's playmakers all over the field. The WR combo of Holmes, Childress, Hall, and Ginn look to be like big time playmakers. I want someone who will get the ball to them and out-athlete the opposing team.

If Smith has a tendency to tuck and run, the game becomes Troy Smith vs. Cincinnati, as opposed to OSU vs. Cincy. Whoever is the better pocket QB should play a large percentage of the time.

On a side note, I was VERY impressed with the depth of our talent level on offense. The line, QBs, Pittman, and Recievers all look like special talents. (I also liked Mo Hall's two kick returns very VERY much! ~ great job, Mo! We needed that!). The only thing that can hold this group back is experience. They've got as much talent as any team in the country, if not more.

It was nice to see Smith finally be given a chance to pass the ball. The early competition between Zwick and Smith will push these young men to get better and better.

Pittman was also very impressive...but I hope Tress gets on him about ducking out of bounds early and stopping the clock with the game winding down.
