Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

I'm not necessarily trying to defend Smith, but Zwick did NOT impress me either. Some of the above posts seem to indicate Zwick looked awesome, which he did not. He had little to no touch, and almost every pass over 10 yards downfield sailed on him. There were at least two "receptions" that were actually touched by a defender first, and easily could have been interceptions. They both looked bad to me, although I'm really not that worried about it.

Im gonna have to disagree on Zwick looking awful. I do think he needs to work on throwing the fade, but the reciever there was several times that the reciever was being double covered. The only really bad throw I can remember was one that he threw to Gonzo who was on the ground when the pass got there, and was almost picked off.

Then go back and watch the second quarter. Zwick threw three straight passes OUT OF BOUNDS to open receivers. Gonzo would have had twice as many catches and yards if half of the passes to him would have been accurate. The fade pass I remember came in the second quarter (I think), and Zwick threw it 10 yards out of bounds. And no, he wasn't simply throwing it away.

Did anyone else hear JT on Speilman on Sports?

First things first

When Asked about the QB situation he thought of Zwick first, which in my mind means that right now Zwick is the leader in his mind. He liked that he played smart, he said at times he got bored dumping the ball off and he didn't like that, but he said that overall he was very pleased.

Then he talked about Smith he said he was very please with His first drive but after the turnover, he felt that he tried to force things too much, kind of like "we're down 7 I need to make something happen" instead of letting the game come to him.

I will agree that Smith probably has a better arm, and better mobility, but he does not have the calm that CK brought to the offense, and will be more prone to mistakes, or even worse in JT's mind Turnovers. This is the mental part of the game that I keep talking about keeps Zwick rated higher than Smith even though Zwick has not mastered it yet either.

Boekman did not get a mention.

why any self respecting Buckeye wants the 'better athlete' playing QB is beyond me... didn't you get your fill with Bells and Stan Jackson???

i want the best QUARTERBACK playing QB, not the best athlete... and Justin Zwick is the better QB... and i don't care HOW far TS can throw the ball... arm strength means dick if you don't have touch...

don't forget, Steve Bellisari might be a better athlete than CK, but CK took us to 25-2 with two BCS Bowl wins and a National Title, and Bells took us to 20-14 and two Outback Bowl losses... i DO NOT want to go there again...

For the record, I DO NOT think that Troy Smith is nearly as bad of quarterback as those two you mentioned. I think that is history that scares you more than this particular situation. We are not running SB or Stan "the man" out there, this is Troy Smith and to say he is the same thing just because he is a great athlete, is in my opinion ignorant.

Michael Vick was a great athlete, but is a pretty good QB too. the same comments were made about steve young, randall cunningham, Steve McNair, Donavan McNabb, Jim McMahaon (sp?)

Do I think Smith will loose the battle, probably, but it will not be because he is an athletic QB, it will be because he is not as good of QB, game manager, and decesion maker, as Zwick.

agreed killer....i think both qbs potentially are of all-big ten ability......

coach tressel today said he was concerned about the way smith lost focus when his team went down by 7 points.....he said there are going to be many times that the buckeyes trail by seven...

as to zwick....most of the passes that looked ugly were simply thrown away.....if a receiver was not wide open....zwick simply tossed it....like it or not...that is what tressel likes....no stupid throws like dorsey threw in the fiesta bowl that completely turned the tide of the game....

zwick may not have looked great to some....but, i think he looked great in coach t's offense.....

Again I said he needed to work on the fade pass. As I remember it, he had 3 fades in the game all thrown out of bounds, 2 of them i think your are referring to in the second quarter. The first one probably would have been caught, the second one, Underwood was all over the reciever, and would have been a very very tough catch, even if the ball was perfectly thrown. The next time Zwick pass was incomplete to Gonzo again, but Underwood again was all over him, with a saftey coming over to help. Also he was on the run, which makes the throw even harder.

that is EXACTLY what Bells did so many times... intead of taking what the D gave him, he tightened up and tried to force the issue, and make the Big Play... basically, Bells always tried to get it back in one play, and i think that's what happened to TS... it doesn't work... talent or not... cannon arm or not... you can't force the issue or you will get beat... plain and simple...

look, i like Troy. i hope he is a great player, but i think that JZ has it between the ears a little more than Troy, even though, physically, Troy is superior...

I think Zwick looked like the better fit at this point in time in Coach T's offense, I would rather have throw aways (aka Krenzel) then bad throws (aka Bellisorry), when you throw it away worst case is you line up again or you punt, but I know some point in the season Zwick will have to make some plays and I think he is more than capable.:osu: :gobucks3: :gobucks4:
