Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

if smith cant execute the simple offense that was run today....there is no way that smith will execute tressels offense on a real gameday....

i was at the game and havent watched the tape yet....but in person....zwick was light years ahead of smith....not even close....

i heard that the QBs were not allowed to run? is that true?

Yes. Late in the game they let Smith put on a white practice jersey so he could run but the offense self destructed deep inside Scarlet territory and they came away with no points.

my point is.....if he cant hit a receiver...he made krenzel look more accurate than germaine.....

and he didnt have to worry about getting hit.....in fact, there was one play where smith scrambled and was left wide open to a blow that would have put him out of the game.....if he didnt have the black jersey on...

its one thing to be a double threat....pass and run....but smith showed some real difficulty throwing today.....a team could easily neutralize his running in a game sitution.....

zwick is closer to a double threat than smith is......

Smith was dissapointing to say the least, he had zero touch on his ball, and like as everyone was saying was inaccurate. Z looked well, though he had a couple of deep balls he a) overthrew (nice to see that though its been awhile since the receivers havent had to wait on the ball) b) the receivers gave up on and went to the sideline rather than deep or c) jsut threw away. I was actually impressed with Z though, he changed the game, his ability to throw the ball made the gray adjust to his abilities. This to me made pittman so effective.

You guys tlake about smith not being able to run, but likewise they called Z down a few times as he threw great dump offs. if the training wheels are able to come off, he could be the guy we needed. Boeckman was mediocare and looked out of stride switching teams andd sharing times.

The other interesting thing is the receivers on gray should have dominated, but did not due to their inability to get the ball, and lisko and gonzo looked real well against Y and underwood. That is the most interesting things to me. Well see how it plays out, I look for Z under center for the big 3 home games this year.

IMO

Zwick will start, the competition is now over .....
Smith will be given a shot ..... but Zwick gets the majority of reps
as the #1 QB

For Smith to take the #1 position, he will have to light it up
EVERY CHANCE HE GETS ...which will be limited as the #2 guy.

I am amazed at how true football fans have viewed this qb battle. Without dropped passes, Smith would have had a higher % completed tan Zwick. And they played Zwicks Game. Now trust me, I have nothing bad to say abouyt Zwick, he did great. But if you think he has a better arm than Smith, your nuts. He plays smarter and with more poise. That is what we need and therefor he will get the job, but please don't let the couple passes we seen lead you to believe that Smith is not the real deal.

A players style gives them there rythym. You take away there style and you take there rythym. Smith was forced to play out of rythym. Ya'll couldn't wait for smith to stumble one time so you could go back to your "golden boy" Craze. Those two take turns out playing eachother all the time. If you think Zwick feels safe from that one game "if thats what you want to call it, then your crazy. He knows what Smith can do and thats why he is not going to relax. He will continue to improve and prove my very first point ever made about these two. Which was"Zwick will end up starting but not before Smith pushes him to exellence". Without Smith pushing him, Zwick would not be where he is. He would have been given the job by default. But now he is earning it the hard way.

ant.....your analysis of t.smith is so biased that it is, basically, not worth responding to .....you are sooooooo in favor of smith that you are not seeing as clearly as you normally do.....

i was at the spring game and have watched it on tape several times......you and i have completely different definitions of "dropped" passes.....you seem to think that a ball thrown four yards behind the receiver (who is only 15 yards away to begin with) and the receiver stops, turns and contorts to try to make a cris carter like grab is a dropped pass.....

by your definition....krenzel would be more accurate than peyton manning....

Welcome aboard TallIndian!

I think Zwich is ahead at this point, BUT I believe JT really stresses the personal progress between spring ball and fall practices. I think he highly values players that continue to make progress while away from the structured coaching and practices. If Smith can make so serious progress compared to Zwick I'd believe the race would be "ON". Personally I just like the fact that we've got 2 really good guys (maybe 3) pushing each other to be their best.

I don't think Ant is so far off the mark here. I agree that Smith didn't look so hot, but I personally thought Zwick looked horrible as well. And the other thing, it's not only that the QB's weren't allowed to run, they weren't even allowed to SCRAMBLE. They were allowed little to no movement to avoid a tackle (or "touch"). If you people don't think that would effect Smith's entire game, you're dreaming. And there isn't a team out there that can take away a QB's scrambling ability.

And again, I though Zwick looked awful. He had a lot of time to throw (at least compared to Smith), and I only saw one "excellent" pass. Of course, that followed 2 passes out of bounds, and then he followed up the good pass with three straight balls that were overthrown by a good 10 yards each. The only offensive player to impress me at all was Pittman. The QB's both looked awful to me, the receivers didn't get a chance, and the OL pretty much sucked up the field as well, along with all the RB's but Pittman. Zwick had the better stat's, but I don't think he impressed anybody.

I totally disagree with this, first and foremost I truely like both quarterbacks, but in my opinion Zwick looked like the more polished qb out there. Smith looked out of synch which can be attributed to the "no running" rule but it showed me that he is not progressing as a quarterback because he was unable to adjust his game, I felt at the slightest bit of pressure he was ready to tuck it and run without even looking downfield.

I thought that Zwick stood in the pocket and delivered the ball on time and he did overthrow a few, but lets be honest, those things get worked out as you work with the recievers and get your timing down. I just didnt think Smith looked comfortable out there. I would rather have a qb who makes quick, percise decisions, then one who is looking to run on every play, he still has that runner mentality and I dont think thats what we want at OSU next year, it makes me nervous and I start having flashbacks to Stanley Jackson....

Now with that said, lets be honest, this spring game really is nothing more than a glorified scrimmage and the offensive package is small, third stringers are playing with first teamers and the defense runs mostly a base defense, so its hard to come away with any kind of feeling for what the team will look like, I do believe in the end that Zwick will be the starter and will be just fine next year.
