Zwick vs. Smith (official thread)

look everyone is on one side or the other and as i see it our spread runs about 10 plays. The problem is an OC sets plays up for later whether the same drive or the next series. I haven't seen much of this, plus with an aggressive defense such a UT and PENN ST, you have to put them on their heels early and often again not much of this done (imo). Defenses just have to stop TS from scrambling because 10-1 he want beat you with his arm. Yeah maybe a homerun here or there but he's not consistant.

On JZ if you give me 3.5 yds a play I'll beat you every day and twice on tuesdays, with our defense. As far as facing tough defenses troy didn't really play against much last half of the year. Iam not a coach anymore but if it was me, the qb postion is open for all 4 of my qb's period.

that was probably a designed play unless something broke wide open. We sort of had a better chance to move the ball from an onsides kick than from our own endzone.
are you serious?

the odds of getting an onsides kick AND scoring a field goal or touchdown are certainly worse than driving to score a field goal or touchdown nearly starting from one's own endzone.

sure, jwinslow, you jest.

I dont post much here simply because most already know what is best for the Buckeyes...

Anyways, figure Id throw my .02 cents in...

Im not positve...but Has TS won a road game yet?

I think if JZ woulda had 3 quarters like TS did against Penn St he would gotten yanked pretty quick.

JZ has done nothing but do what is expected of him, been a team player threw the 2 benchings in favor of TS, who has broken numerous rules..

I guess if TS is ithe answer I think were asking the wrong question...

BTW tOSU did win a National Championship without a running QB or the spread Offense. A QB has to throw the ball first, mobility is a plus, a big plus these days, but a good defense will limit that aspect as Penn St did against us and as the Bucks did against UT and Vince Young. Bad thing is we found out Young can throw pretty good also. Maybe he can steal the Heisman from Leinart so Ole 45 can remain the only 2 time winner

is that so? You really can't scramble when you are in your own endzone, therefore you can't throw the ball away. Many possessions that start on the 1 yard line result in punts.

How well did we move the ball that game? I'd say we had more of a chance to get the onsides kick and make one play to get in FG range (Huston has 60 yd distance)... than move the ball 60 yards when starting in a really difficult location.

I'm not the only one who wondered if that was intentional. I don't know that we trotted out there and went for the safety, but I think Troy may have been told to take a safety if it breaks down rather than an INT.

No way that was designed...
I often misuse words, I think we ran a play intending to pick up yardage, but were willing to take a safety instead of throwing an errant pass. Had he somehow gotten rid of the ball, there would have been no more than 15-16 seconds left (he got sacked at 0:19), leaving an impossible situation.

i can't but wholeheartedly agree. smith did not go down as if he was conceding a safety. i just can't see tressel wanting smith to think in the back of his mind that it is okay to take the safety.

the odds of going 65 yards, even being backed up against your own endzone, and making a field goal/scoring a touchdown have to better than recovering an onside kick and kicking a field goal/scoring a touchdown.

i mean, what are you saying to your quarterback if you don't feel that they can move the ball down the field and that a safety is a good idea?

I guess, but with 15-18 seconds left, is it even possible to get in FG range when they know that's what you are trying to do? I can see it had the first play been completed, but after that... I think an onsides kick and a 15 yard pass is much more probable than a bomb, another 15 yard pass, not lettting any time run off (probably requires getting out of bounds, to get teh linemen downfield on the bomb, and to set up the kick team on the other).

i think we're straying a bit here. a previous poster intended to place some blame on smith for the safety. of course, smith was responsible for the safety, as was the line, but smith had practically no room to run and was placed in a dire situation. by no means am i going to blame smith and the safety for the loss to texas. between smith's safety and zwick's fumble, clearly the worse mistake was zwick's fumble. i'm sure that we would have no debate about that.

I guess that's the question. You hate to take the ball out of the hands of your QB, but do you see more hail mary's or onsides kicks recovered? You also have to factor in getting out of bounds on that hail mary, which makes it even less probable.

Looking for insight. I agree it would seem like an asanine call. I don't know that i would call for a safety as a coach.

It was player in desperation time looking to desperate measures...just like JZ, he was trying to make a play.

I have a hard time blaming either one in those situations (Texas or PSU) but I do know the reaction has been unfairly biased IMHO.
