Zach Smith (Official Thread)

It seems to me like her credibility is more crucial to whether or not you believe the Powell PD properly did their jobs.

Meyer and everyone else at OSU relied on the police and planned to take additional action pending charges being filed.

Charges were never filed and additional action was not taken by OSU.

Putting yourself in the officer’s shoes the night of the 2015 incident, the claim was that Zach Smith pushed Courtney Smith into a wall the previous day, and she showed the officer a picture of a tiny cut on her thumb and a bruise on her elbow as proof of two past instances of alleged abuse.

The tiny cut on the thumb being used as proof of a past “attack” with a tin can (which people cut themselves on independently all the time) in particular seems flimsy.

The choking allegation is and has always been the most serious charge, but there was apparently no picture at the time to share with the officer, and she reported to the police that it only happened once the previous year, which she changed to include the allegation in multiple incidents during the Stadium interview, including adding it to her recollection that she did not originally include in the police report.

She also apparently erroneously claimed that Ohio State sent a lawyer to pressure her to drop previous charges, which she seems to have confused with the 2009 incident that had nothing to do with Ohio State.

Throw on top of it all that Zach Smith apparently had to return from a recruiting trip to answer questions about this, which makes the accusation that he forcefully took his child from her the day before strange at best, and it’s pretty easy to see why there was a lack of evidence at the time to move forward with charges.

Finally, Courtney herself said in the Stadium interview that 2015 was the last time Zach Smith touched her. So the police report at the time that the Dispatch just published is the extent of the allegations she made to police (outside of the additional 911 calls that all add to questions about her credibility).

Again, she added more incidents of choking in the Stadium interview to her recollection that she for some reason did not include in her report to police during the last time that she herself says that Zach Smith allegedly physically harmed her.

If I’m left to parse out the entirety of Courtney’s accusations, I’m most inclined to believe the choking part because the texts give the appearance of Zach admitting that. At this point, even I am willing to concede Courtney is the kind of person who would doctor texts, though Zach still hasn’t denied sending them, which is strange since he’s been getting attacked for the texts on Twitter.

Not really all that inclined to believe the cutting part because, well, who cuts someone with a can on their hand intentionally? Zach’s explanation of that incident makes the most sense - though I’m sure he’s downplaying his own fault in the altercation.

And the accusation Powell was actually investigating (the pushing) probably had no objective support so of course there were no charges.

There’s not much there there to support the assertion that Zach Smith was anything other than a terrible husband and an immature coach who got his job because of his grandfather. In some ways, I kind of feel bad for him because he’s been branded a woman beater. But I also blame him for the way he treated this woman (emotionally abusive seems like a fair characterization to me), even if she’s gone to extremes to get back at him for it.

Depends on the agency, but the ones I worked for, and the rest in my area, the complainant/victim always signed the report.
Thats what has me confused. Obviously it's if she signed it, but if she signed a statement that reads as what was reported last night, her inly defense is "I didn't take the situation seriously enough to review my statement before signing." Which is pretty unbelievable. But as stated, a big "if she signed it."

:eye roll:

It’s like they can’t even remember headlines from three weeks ago that say the exact opposite and think, “hey, maybe we should double check this before running with it since it directly contradicts something we ran with less than a month ago.”

Also, does anyone remember Ohio State getting heat for not contacting her when that initial “no contact” story ran?

I don’t think anyone would care if said person were a manager at Skyline Chili. But as a position coach at a prestigious football program, you have to have your personal life in order or it can, AS WE SO CLEARLY SEE, become a problem.
Going to a strip club doesn’t mean you don’t have your life in order. Shit that’s the least egregious thing that Zach’s guilty of.

When you thought a thread involving all of Zach Smith's shennanigans + an overly emotional defense of ZS couldn't be filled with any more shit......you have people liking Skyline.

You shut your damn mouth.

I assure you this - you give ANY institution a half million bucks to comb through coaches' personal lives, they're gonna find this sort of stuff.

It only becomes a problem, in my IMO, is because some people have this absurdly romantic view that coaches need to be these altruistic deities - infallible in every way.... as was said; see PSU. (Edit: To be clear, there's a chasm between looking the other way to kids being raped in your facilities and an Asst. coach having an affair with another adult and running up a tab at a strip club.. I'm not saying there isn't a line.. I'm saying strip clubs and mistresses doesn't cross it, in my IMO)

I dont even know how its fair to characterize him as emotionally abusive. What evidence supports that? I keep seeing red flags of her being verbally, emotionally, and financially abusive towards him. Yes, he cheated on her but wouldnt it be just as big a leap to say he was driven away from her by her forcing altercations on him as to assume she only turned on him after he cheated? Your tone has improved dramatically from the stuff you said a few weeks ago but it still feels like you are trying too hard to hold on to any shred of credibility she may have to justify blaming him for this.
