Any chance that the info the dispatch is getting is wrong or incomplete?

The dispatch linked the actual response Ohio St gave to the NCAA. But I don't have the dispatch link handy at the moment as I got it through Ken Gordon's twitter feed.

the worst part about vacating wins, you just know the media (who i couldn't give two [censored]s for) will go back to saying OSU is 0-9 against the SEC in bowls and never have beaten them (will pretend Arky game never existed)

nah.. they'd rather humiliate OSU and bring up the vacated season as often as possible..

No, it's more of Michigan hasn't beaten OSU since 03.

But only the win for OSU would be wiped out from the 2010 season, correct? That would mean that Michigan still reports a loss for that game. The result isn't wiped away for both teams. I may be misinformed, however, which is entirely possible.

well shit.next question... any chance NCAA said throw out some minor stuff so we can "hammer" (add on a few extras make it seem really harsh but not really) you and make it look like we're doing our jobs?

I made a post in the past few weeks what I expect the punishment would be. If OSU stepped up and said a post season ban of one year, 4 years of probation, and a reduction of 6 scholarships over the next 3 years (2 a year) the NCAA probably would have been fine with that, but no let's show we learned nothing. So stupid. You're now forcing the NCAA to give a proper punishment.

Hell Michigan's self imposed punishment was worse than ours for not filling out compliance forms and improper practicing time limits.

This is what I don't understand. With this line of thinking the NCAA will punish us above and beyond what they think is fair because we "lowballed" on the self inflicted violations. To me the whole self inflicted penalty is meaningless.

Lets say we included a one year bowl ban. If the NCAA wanted a two year bowl ban, they would increase the penalty. They aren't going to say...well since you self imposed 1 year we will stick with that.

We are going to lose the PR battle either way. If we self impose a year bowl ban, the talk will be how we are getting away with it since USC got 2 years. If we self impose two years the talk will be that we were worse than USC so it should be 3. I am ok with us not self imposing a bowl ban and letting the NCAA decide. Hell, everyone with an opinioin said JT should be gone. He resigned, and it just fanned the flames. The fact that JT is no longer the coach here should be taken into account.

I still fear that way more sanctions are coming. USC sanctioned their bball team and still got bowl bans and reduced scholarships. I fear that OSU could be getting a similar punishment. This sucks.

USC had concurrent basketball and football (and women's tennis) issues and generally did not cooperate with the NCAA investigations into them. OSU's violations were mainly committed by individuals who have been sanctioned already, and OSU has been something of a model of self-reporting and responsiveness since January. This is obviously a pretty optimistic/hopeful set of self-imposed penalties being presented to the NCAA, but I do think the comparison to USC's sanctions is more of a media meme than a realistic outcome for OSU.

not sure why since OSU self reported everything, once they knew Tressel lied they sent it to the NCAA
Good point. I just always automatically think the worst in these situations. That way I'm not surprised when it happens and am happy if they get a lighter punishment.

i was like that, but i found out the less I paid attention to the garbage the media was saying and more to who actually knew what was going on, I started feeling a bit better about the situation

Well, my total non-insider thoughts (well, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express)

These penalties seem to ONLY address the Tressel coverup versus any other issues. Technically the NCAA can send another Notice of Allegations for the Cars/TP stuff and then this process starts over again.

A total waste of time... but then again we are talking about Gene Smith.

But I haven't read the whole thing (over 66 pages of shit to wade through)

You at least setup the appearance that you're are taking this issue seriously and want it never to happen again, the NCAA doesn't want to ban OSU football from bowl games, but it also wants the appearance of people following the rules.

Right now we are pinning this all on a rogue coach who didn't know what to do with the information he was given and therefore made a bad judgement. This doesn't fly, we played 5 ineligible players 13 games while our coach repeatedly hid information from the school and the NCAA, including lying when the situation came out in the media before our bowl game. The NCAA gave us a break that time, I don't expect another one. We burned them.

To me Smith is making a gamble but I can see the logic in it.

His play is obviously "Tressel was the lone wolf offender and we fired him/asked him to resign so no need to punish the school."

If the NCAA will take that or not is the gamble but the commendable part, as I see it, is that he's trying to get the most bang for his losing Tressel dollar. What was the point in removing Tressel if you turn around and still voluntarily take Bowl bans and scholarship reductions? You could perceive this as Smith trying to not leave money on the table in his negotiations with the NCAA.

I don't like Smith and I don't necessarily agree with this but its one way of looking at it. He's going all in on how big a deal it really is to lose Jim Tressel.
