I'm not defending illegal actions but on a side thought...

Is there another hometown newspaper that tries to smear its flagship program as much as The Dispatch?

no surprise this non-story is on the front page of eSp1n.com

This is far from a non-story. When car dealers are getting passes to the title game, the dealership has a bunch of autographed memorabilia, and players and their families are all shopping at the same two dealerships with the same salesman at both... something isn't right.

I'd be surprised if nothing came of this. Too many coincidences for there to be nothing, and this hasn't exactly been a quietly run operation. My roommate told me the story and I knew it was Maxton before he got to that part of the story.

Your statement makes it sound as if Archie and tOSU compliance are looking at the car sales for the first time.
Meh. Potato/potato. Archie and tOSU compliance are looking at the car sales for the first time as it relates to relatives, and he started a review (ok, re-review?) of athlete sales that is not yet complete. As the article said he only had spot checked previously, one would assume that he is doing a sale by sale review now, given the attention. I think that the language you quoted is significantly different than what Max said.
See this:
Archie said that he was aware of all the transactions involving the athletes that The Dispatch found, but he was unaware of purchases made by their relatives.
That quote confirms why this:

The compliance people have responded that they vetted all the car deals, and that they saw no NCAA issues relative to them. This is sounding more and more like a big noise over very little.

was not 100% accurate, unless "all the car deals" means athletes. No biggie. I see where he was talking about the first spot checked review of players. But saying what Max said is as true as saying the sky is falling. Neither statement is accurate. I understand Max's position trusting in the compliance staff. I feel that they likely have a good feel for the player's sales. I'm sure that USC knew all about where Reggie Bush lived and how much he paid in rent. Players are not the worry. Family and relatives of players is a subject that scares the Hell out of me, as those are almost impossible to control.

As fun as it is speculating and such, might I remind you that The Ohio State men's volleyball team is currently 1 set away from winning the national championship on ESPN2.

If you have it, why don't you take a break from this bullshit and watch! :oh:

As long as the players don't know where their parents got the 180 thousa...er...new car, it's cool, right?
To be accurate, the fact that dad asked Wisky for a new car will not make tOSU or the Buckeye signing kid an NCAA violator unless you can prove tOSU either agreed to, or gave him, a car.

But enough about football. How many service aces did tOSU men have tonight? :banger:

Re-review is OK with me.

And as far as spot checking, I read the article to mean that Archie reviewed all of the transactions, but that the compliance department only spot-checked some of the prices against Blue Book/other indicators of market value.

I do more than just spot check your posts - so potato:tater-tots to you. :wink2:

But screw this stuff for now - I need to get the NCAA Volleyball Champs on the BP front page.

Unfortunately, they didn't have many (1, maybe 2, I think), but a lot of service errors. They did, however, have a lot of kills. Sangrey had a career-high 30. Duck over to the volleyball thread to join in the celebration! :osu:

I think there's a recent precedent that gives me less reason to worry if there is some kind of violation regarding players' families without the players' tacit involvement.

It's only a story if the sales prices to the players/families are significantly different from the sales to the public.

Penn Station on High Street has a hundred cards with OSU autographs on them hanging in the store. Did they get them in exchange for free cheesesteak, or do they just like the subs better than Subway?

I'm done being naive. This is a story whether we want it to be or not, and especially because of all the other shit that's happened.
