What happens if the "unnamed source" is an Arkansas fan that was pissed and decided to call in after the Sugar Bowl rather than driving all the way up to Ohio State to poison some shrubbery. Two months of "investigation" later and two more people saying "yeah, I suppose that is a possibility" and Yahoo decides to run with it.

Again, this is Yahoo, not a blog. Their unnamed sources are probably very legitimate sources who just don't want their names involved with such a negative story.

Its the unamed source part I have the biggest problem with if you are a whistleblower ..come forward with your evidence ..don't hide behind reporters and freedom of the press..you are basically calling JT a liar that is a big charge..

Agreed. Don't be pissed at Yahoo, they're reporting a story. Be pissed at whoever gets in trouble and everyone who broke rules, or the source who didn't want to be associated with the story.

I can tell you I'm pissed at the players for breaking the rules.. and I know they're "kids."

I just find the timing to be coincidental... two months of investigation puts the initiation exactly at the Sugar Bowl. Weird that the unnamed source didn't feel compelled to come forward earlier in December when the story initially came out if they decided to come forward at all.

Either way, this blows and seems like something that will either blow up or linger with endless speculation and will be hard to squash.

Ryan Hamby got death threats for dropping a pass in the end zone. Regardless of the veracity of the claim, can you imagine the living hell somebody would go through if the essentially tried to get Jim Tressel fired?

The person has very good reason to remain anonymous.

What's the end game then? Eventually won't the source have to be named if this leads to an investigation? Or is it the source's attempt to simply smear if they want to remain anonymous?

I'm with you, I don't think the timing is random at all. I also think if you're going to make such a big claim that you should put your name with it. But, I don't blame Yahoo/the reporter. I'm an aspiring journalist, and I've had the "unnamed source" talk before.. it's a bitch and nobody wins, except the source.

You'd think the name would come out eventually if there's meat to the story. Unless the source just handed all the evidence to Yahoo and GTFO.

I agree, the tension of breaking a huge story versus making sure it is absolutely true is a difficult one to balance in the information age. Wait just a few minutes too long and you are just linking to a source rather than breaking the news.

That story is probably getting tens of thousands of hits an hour right now and it will only get bigger as the week goes on. It is probably the most popular article the writer has ever written.

If this story goes further then they have to name a source and they have to prove how it was communicated.

I have very little faith in many journalists anymore....I do respect Wetzel but he has to be sitting on a source.

This will be interesting to see....

Tressel is so damn calculated from what book the team will read each year, to personal appearances, helping those in need etc.

I can't believe that he is the one that screwed up.

Thankfully the Auburn, USC and Oregon things are taking place in the same time and place.
