XBox 360, PS3 or Wii? ( ESPN on 360 for TWC)

If you are ok paying retail, Costco offers a lifetime warranty. If anything happens to my console, I walk in and get a refund for every dime I spent, then can rebuy the console right then or go buy 300 bucks worth of peanut butter and toilet paper.

Do you really like TP and PB sammys? Sounds like an interesting combination...

I have a few questions about the PS3 vs XBOX 360. My buddy and I are both wanting to get a system where we can play online together mainly for sports game purposes(ncaa football, fifa) and have been debating which one to get. Any input on any of my questions from people who've experienced both systems would be greatly appreciated.

1.) I've read the entire thread and the consensus seems to be XBox Live is vastly superior to PS3's online play. I've never played either so I don't understand what exactly the differences are. Could I get a short explanation with a few details as to exactly why XBox Live is better(I do know you have to pay for xbox live and ps3 is free)?

2.) XBox seems to have a reputation of not being entirely reliable(RROD, disk scratching, overheating, etc.) warrented or not I don't know. If I were to get an XBox I would get the new 360 slim. Can anyone tell me how real this problem really would be with the slim? Are there any hardware problems with the PS3?

3.) With respect to sports games and in general, which system has the better graphics, gameplay and overall gaming experience?

4.) Any distinct difference in games available for both systems?

5.) I know PS3 has blue-ray, is there anything else I haven't covered that anybody feels one system as a marked advantage over the other with things available online, etc.?

Personally I'm leaning towards the 360, but I think my buddy is leaning PS3 because I think he's concerned about the reliability of the 360 and he likes the blue-ray and likes that online play is free. Any help/advice would be greatly apprecitated and repped accordingly!

Hands down Xbox has the much better online system. PS3 is ramping up their online play, but it still no where near Xbox. There alot of features with Xbox live as well like Netflix, downloading tons of game demos, and much more. Microsoft is also beefing up Xbox live to support more online features, like Hulu. Sure you have to pay for Xbox live, but it truly is not that much for a year subscription and the service is alot better.

The Xbox has gotten a reputation of not being reliable, but honestly i have no had many problems. I got my original 360 the day they came out...and it just RROD on my about 3 months ago, which i replaced for pretty cheap. Now the brand new 360s fix alot of the problems the 1st/2 gen 360s had. PS3 i'm sure has problems are well, they just are not as public.

For sports games, personally i like Xbox better, but that is all personal choice. You can basically get the same big name titles on both platforms so it doesn't make that big of a difference.

The game differences between the systems seem to be slimming down now. Most major titles you can get on both, except a few here and there. I love the Halo series, so that would be +1 in my book for Xbox...but PS3 also has specific games that are very good as well.

The Blu-ray is a very nice addition, but how much will use the player? If you plan on getting, or have alot, of Blue-ray movies and need another player then that is a huge plus.

I don't have a PS3, just Xbox 360 so i may be alittle bias, but people with PS3 may chime in as well.

I had an Xbox 360 and now have a PS3, so I'm pretty qualified for an answer.

The 360 I had was built in 2009 and had HDMI so it wasn't an older model.

360:
The Good:
Comes with a Mic headset, can buy wireless headphones with mic attached.
Online play is solid, as more people have headsets.
More Demos available.

The Bad:
Reliability. I had 3 light RROD, sent it in, and within a month it happened again. Had it fixed locally (didn't want the 3 week turnaround time again). Broke again. Fixed again (much better fix) and am now selling it. The heatsinks are poorly attached and needed a better method then the weak X-clamps they had in place. Absolute crappy built system internally.
DVD reader was loud, so were the fans.
The system I had you had to purchase a $100 WIFI attena in addition to the online service if you didn't want to hook it directly up to your router.

The new elite systems have WIFI attached and a good size hard drive for the same price as a PS3 system, but I'm not sure if they fixed the reliability issue. About everyone I knew who had a 360 has had the RROD. It's common.

The PS3:
The good:
Blu-Ray rocks, I use it all the time.
Online play is still really good, but not as good as 360.
You can use any blu-tooth headset for online play.
Games more geared for adults gamers.
Runs quieter, seems more solidly built.
Free online play.

The bad:
Not nearly as many demos. But I don't play a ton of demos, so no big deal.
Menu system is a little cumbersome, but is serviceable.
Installing updates and demos takes more time. They download quickly, but then you need to install them which can take 10 minutes or so.
There is no good wireless headset with a mic as you need a blutooth connection. I always play with a headset so my wife and kid can sleep. There is a wired version, but I don't want to string a wire across my room when I play.

Where they are equal:
They both have online netflix capabilities, which is worth the money. The 360s is internal, the PS3 you need to put in a Netflx DVD to access the online service. (DVD is free).
The games seem identical in how they look and play. They both have proprietary games that are good.

Overall I prefer the PS3 because it runs quieter and I haven't had any problems with it. The Blu-Ray addition is a real nice + and when I bought my PS3 the XBox 360 didn't have an internal WIFI. The new 360 closes the gap, but Blu-Ray wins. I think the 360 will be obsolete before the PS3 technology-wise.

From what i've heard and seen, they have fixed the RROD problem. The new Xbox has a built-in sensor that will alert you when the Xbox is getting too hot and needs to be shut down. The middle of the logo becomes red, and a pop-up will show on your screen asking if you want to shut down. Press B, and it will shut down for you.

I have a PS3 and wouldn't consider buying an XBox anymore, I bought an XBox when they first came out because of price. Having said that, there really isn't much difference that hasn't already been discussed. The buying decision to me came down to the Blu-Ray player (though you can get those for $150 and less now) and what system do the people you know have? If everyone you know has an XBox and you buy a PS3, the online experience won't be as fun, or vice-a-versa.

First of all, why don't you play online?

Secondly, no seriously, you don't play online? Does the PS3 offer that sort of capability? Astonishing.

I think I have the 60GB version and don't think I have used 2GB? Will you keep songs, pictures, etc on there?

If you don't have a problem with buying refurbished(used) ps3's you can get the ones with smaller HDD's for quite a bit less at gamestop or eb games. We have both systems at my parents house, but I really don't see an advantage to either. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Do you have wireless or ethernet for internet where your ps3 is? Even if you don't play online you can download all kinds of stuff (updates, themes, demos, NCAA ROSTERS, etc) for your games. Do all generations of the ps3 have wireless built in?

Wow, hard to believe no one has mentioned one of the key things for me....the XBox controller is better then the PS3. The left thumb position should be an analog stick, not the d pad. I even had a PS1 and PS2, and the XBox layout is far superior.

Outside of that the PS3 is better, but if I had to play the exact same game on an Xbox360 or PS3, I would always play on the Xbox360 simply for the controller. Although if I didn't have a system today and wanted to buy one it would be the PS3, yet the controller is the one this that really helps the Xbox IMO.

and hey, the controller works on my computer too. I don't use it often, but for Batman Arkham Asylum it worked great. A controller is great for a beat em up/stealth game. The graphics are better on PC, plus is adds physics not on consoles. Probably a minor plus for some, but a nice plus for me.

The only reason I use my hard drive is to install games to the hard drive. The disc still has to be in the drive (otherwise everyone would pirate the games), but the load screens finish faster and the disc does not need to spin, which means quieter use and no wear and tear on the disc.
Other than numbers that I dont know shit about, is there a big difference between the PS3 250GB, and the 120GB. I am a casual gamer, who does not play online. thanks.
Simply put, no. You could download music, movies, etc to it, but really, 99% of users will never need much space on their hard drive.

Yup. Neither are bad (like the original big Xbox controller), but the Xbox controller is a lot better for long gaming sessions. The ergonomic curves & positioning of the analog sticks (joysticks) are a lot more comfortable.

Good point. I do prefer the 360 controller, but not by much. Is your controller wireless? If so how did you get it to work with your pc? I know the wired one's you just need to download drivers. I know there is a little adapter for the wireless controllers to work on a pc as well.
