WR Torrance Gibson (Green Bay Blizzard)

THE TORRANCE GIBSON BLOG

I want to try and visit Ohio State this summer before my season kicks off. I want to visit UCF too.

The whole recruitment is slowing down now. I'm getting a lot of pressure from the schools wanting me to commit early because other quarterbacks in my class are committing. I just don't want to rush anything and get locked in to a situation that I'm uncomfortable with. I want to make the right decision; that's why I plan to take my time with it.

I'm still thinking that I'm probably going to commit after the season. I'll definitely take all five officials too. Once I make my announcement; that's it. I'm not a traitor. When I commit I'm definitely all in. That's another reason why it's taking so long for me.

Elite 11 2014: For Torrance Gibson, it's all about being a QB
BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Originally, Torrance Gibson wasn't supposed to be here until Tuesday.

The No. 1 athlete in the 247 composite rankings, Gibson was originally set to participate in the Opening, but not the Elite 11, the quarterback camp/competition that started Sunday at the Nike World Headquarters. But there Gibson was Sunday competing with 18 other quarterbacks, the result of a late invitation to make him the 19th quarterback in the competition.

And that, said the senior from American Heritage in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is the way it should be.

"Just quarterback, that's all I came here to do," Gibson said after Sunday's second Elite 11 session. "They talk about me as a quarterback, they talk about me as an athlete. I'm a quarterback, not an athlete."

He said he plans on staying for The Opening, but playing quarterback.

That declaration may come as a surprise to some. He threw for over 1,800 yards and ran for 1,000 more last season as a quarterback. But at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds and with 4.53 speed in the 40-yard dash, many envisioned him as a big wide receiver.

He's not having that.

"I'm a quarterback," he said. "That's what I always wanted to be."

As a quarterback, he's far from a finished product. On Sunday, he struggled at times with mechanics, particularly when it came to throwing touch passes. At one point during drills, while other quarterbacks were getting normal reps in drills, Gibson was pulled aside by camp counselor Jordan Palmer, the former NFL quarterback and Carson Palmer's brother.

The pair worked on the left-handed Gibson's release and footwork, with the counselor urging him to relax when throwing mid-range passes, saying "throw it just like I'm five yards away."

That Gibson is still a bit raw is part of what makes him intriguing as a quarterback prospect. He's effective now, but what if he cleans up his mechanics and becomes more of a pure passer?

There are plenty out there who believe in what Gibson can be as a quarterback and he is rewarding them with his mutual interest.

In May, he named seven front runners: Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Miami, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Central Florida. The common thread is all seven want him to play quarterback.

On Sunday, Gibson said the three SEC schools (Tennessee, Auburn and LSU) and at the top of the seven.

"I'm plan on taking all five my visits," he said. "I'll commit sometime in October or November."

Scout $ - Vols still on top for Gibson

7/7

By Parker.....Not bothered by schools already having a QB commit. Plans on a decision around October or November. Will definitely take officials to Tennessee, Ohio State & Auburn. Article also says he has a tentative visit scheduled to Ohio State in July.

This kid is in a class of his own when it comes to his athletic ability. His arm has some good pop to it as well so the potential is there. He seems like a good kid who wants to be great and someone we should still push like crazy for. We probably have room for 6-8 more in this class and I feel like once he visits he will have some serious thinking to do because if he wants in we can't say no

It's official, Florida four-star QB Torrance Gibson is headed to Ohio State for visit: Buckeyes recruiting
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- If it seems like we write about Torrance Gibson a lot, we do.

The four-star quarterback recruit from Florida is an intriguing prospect as a QB and an overall athlete. He's an interesting test case for the Buckeyes as they chase a top-tier Florida talent that every major school in the South also has interest in. And now the Buckeyes at least are getting him to Ohio. Gibson confirmed that on his Twitter account late Monday night.

As was suspected earlier Monday, when Gibson told cleveland.com he was in the process of finalizing his plans, the 2015 recruit will be in Ohio Stadium for the Buckeyes' biggest recruiting event of the season, Friday Night Lights. That will take place on ... Friday night.

And it will be under the lights. The new permanent lighting at the Shoe was tested this week.

Getting Gibson to campus is just part of the battle. But the Buckeyes always want to introduce out-of-state players to the vibe in their home.

Gibson has been all over the board with his level of interest in Ohio State, listing SEC schools like Tennessee, Auburn and LSU ahead of the Buckeyes. But then Gibson made it clear that he hasn't given up on Ohio State.

And the Buckeyes haven't given up on him.

Ohio State has a quarterback in its 2015 class with in-state prospect Joe Burrow. But if Gibson wants to be a Buckeye, Ohio State will make room for two quarterbacks in this class.

This is recruiting. We're a long way from a decision, and Gibson may change his attitude about the Buckeyes 100 times before he makes that call.

But getting him to Ohio? That needed to happen if this was going to go anywhere.

Interesting embedded video interview.

I happened to look at the message boards at UTenn and Auburn, and their fan bases seem to be similar to ours, in that we all think that our coaching staff has passed on this kid due to mysterious off the field issues, that no one mentions specifically. But in reality I don't think any of the coaches have passed on this kid, even UT who already has 2 commits from QBs, and Auburn also has one but is also very hard after Francois. All of the talk of his supposed ego, seems to be overblown, as the recruits that have met him and befriended him say the complete opposite. And honestly, it'd be kind of difficult not to have somewhat of an ego, when grown men(and women) lose their minds over every tweet and interview he does, if he doesn't name their school as his leader. His twitter page is a creepy view at fan after fan commenting to him about joining their team.
At the end of the day, this kid would be amazing in our offense. A future offensive skill position chart with:
QB Gibson. RB Harris(splitting with Samuel). WR Van Jefferson(or Lawrence Cager) and Jalin Marshall. Slot Dontre Wilson(splitting with EGW)
That lineup would be a wet dream for Buckeye fans. No offense to Burrows, but he doesn't strike fear in Defenses like Gibson would, as Gibson is home run waiting to happen with his arm AND legs! Something that is an incredible asset in this offense. I can't wait to hear how this visit goes, as we can definitely use Gibson's talent in S&G.

I like Gibson and want him to become a Buckeye starting QB if his off-the-field issues are, in fact, minimal or non-existent and he proves that he is the best man for the job. With that said, the ability to "strike fear in defenses" isn't necessarily a requisite quality for a National Championship QB. Braxton Miller most definitely has that ability, but as much as I adore him as football player and human being, the reality is that he doesn't have a ring (hopefully that changes this year). Craig Krenzel didn't exactly strike fear in any defenses. Nor have any of the relatively recent Bama QBs with rings (Barker, McElroy, McCarron). I'm just suggesting that you not sell Burrow, Barrett, Collier, Jones, etc. short, as the one of them may end up being the very best answer for the Buckeyes at QB.
