WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

That said guys, Okla State did a fine job on punts tonight, excepting the one they sent out of bounds early for 17 yards. They limited that aspect of our game very nicely.

Ginn proved he is a fabulously exciting player, but WangHo was right as well about their punt coverage team. They did a solid job. So let's leave it at everyone being right. :)
i could limit the punt return team if i punted out of bounds too.

Ginn as QB?

With all the talk about the game last night, I haven't seen any substantial discussion about Ginn's use as a QB last night.

Running as a QB, he was obviously devastating. But the thing I found interesting at least a couple of times when they did it was that there were 5 WRs. Think about that. 5 WRs with Ginn as the QB? Interesting possibilities. Why would you do that? Here is what I came up with.

#1) 5 wide spreads out the defense. Spreading out the defense when a run is coming helps make the run more effective, fewer guys to tackle the ballcarrier.

#2) 5 wide means more blockers on the outside. With Ginn, you know that he is going to take it outside. It also spreads out blockers on both sides of the field, which helps out when Ginn reverses direction like he commonly does.

#3) If, or should I say when, Ginn throws the ball, he will have 5 guys in patterns, meaning everyone gets single coverage at best and someone is bound to be open, especially given all the attention Ginn himself will garner.

Do you think we will see this formation again next year with 3 healthy and very good QBs? What if Ginn is playing CB? Do we take this out of the playbook then? Is there any possibility we could see Ginn playing WR, TB, QB, CB, PR and KR next year? Is that possible for any player to legitimately do?

Can Ginn win the Heisman as a CB exclusively? Could he win it exclusively as a WR/PR/RB like he was used second half of this year? I have no doubt that if he is used at WR/RB/QB/PR/KR/CB, he will be a top 3 candidate for sure and may win it going away. If he does all that, it would not surprise me to see score a TD 6 different ways (punt return, kick return, catch, run, interception return, throw).

I wanted to see at least ONE pass... to see if it was the biggest duck ever or a pass to make you wonder "what if"

I'm guessing a few fellas like VG probably saw TG play QB in HS...
what about it fellas? how was he as a passer?

Regarding the punts out of bounds....the first two were bad punts on Farden's part. Our special teams coach asked cole to give the punt a nice angle that would allow our guys a shot at Ginn (good coaching)...Cole shanked the kicks. They were not intentional kicks out of bounds. He's never been asked to do what they asked him to do. It was disappointing to say the least. The third kick out of bounds...any coach with half a brain is going to ask for the punt to go out of bounds at the 3 yard line.

To recap, Ginn had the opportunity to field 3 punts if I recall. The first, he got only 7 yards due to a quality punt and good coverage. The second he conceded to the other guy (the punt was down the middle if I recall). His third opporunity he passed on because our guys were down there in his face already. The guy is not stupid, I don't blame him for not picking up the ball. Consequently, Cole set an Alamo Bowl record with the 67 yard punt.

Thanks to those guys that did recognize what I was saying regarding our punt coverage team. And also to those that recognized I never doubted Ginn's abilities, just saying I didn't think he could get it done. Take care Buckeyes!

Ginn at QB was scary. I still can't believe it took us that long to realize that if #7 is lined up at QB, he's more than likely going to run the ball. One time we finally sniffed that out and tackled him for a loss, which was a minor moral victory.

Just one time I would have loved to see Ginn take the glove off, fake a draw and then put it up. You can't tell me every Okie St. DB and LB on the field wouldn't have bit on that...

Only thing is... that most- not sure if all- but most of the time he was at QB we were already in FG range... so... we know the story on that... Don't fuck up the 3.

To the other OSU folks...I heard Robbie Reid's name mentioned last night. How is he coming along? Does he have a chance to unseat Woods next year? He and Xavier Lee were targets of last year's class as athletic QBs, and from what I remember he also has a very strong arm (or is that Lee, or both?). Obviously spring ball will determin a lot of this, but I was just curious as to how he is coming along...

Ted Ginn did not play QB last night in any traditional sense. We ran a couple of direct snaps to a WR. He was not even trusted to hand the ball off let alone read a defense and put it in the air.

It took JT five weeks to let him play WR. Anybody who thinks he was given serious consideration to run the offense in the week since Smith was suspended is greatly mistaken.

Robbie is coming along fine. Our QB situation may very well have been different this year if he had not gotten hurt. It is a very, very tough call as to who will start next year. Reid may have Woods beat on talent alone, but Woods has a year of experience. I would say its his job to lose. Alot may very well depend on what, if anything, happens in the staff this off season.

ginn can throw it enough to be deadly with glenville type of speed all around him and being as dangerous a runner as teddy is.

didn't have the arm that you would want at an ohio state but he throws a decent ball and was fairly accurate. i really can't believe we didn't have him throw a TD this year. we must be saving that for at michigan or something.

he actually played a decent amount of qb as a junior splitting with hiley and then had the job all to himself his last year.
