WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

you guys (oksu) have punted 51 times this year in 11 games for 4.64 per game. 28 punts have been returned, thats 2.55 per game. The average return was 10.39 yards with a long of 50 and given up one td.

ohio state has been punted to 73 times, 6.64 per game, returned 34 punts (3.09 per game) for 585 yards for 17.9 per return, five for touchdowns. heres osu states for santonio theodore and bam.

PUNT RETURNS No. Yds Avg TD Long
---------------------------------------
Holmes,S 19 206 10.8 1 63
Ginn Jr.,Ted 14 377 26.9 4 82
Childress,Bam 1 2 2.0 0 2
Total.......... 34 585 17.2 5 82
theodore goes for a touchdown statistically 29% of the time. so in theory if he touches it 3 times he should be gonefor one. keep iin mind he has a total of 46 touches this year (runs, catches, pr, kr) and has 7 touchdowns or he scores 15.22% of the time he touches the ball.

numbers are numbers but many of us have seen some expolsive players here in columbus, few if any can match ginn, he is lighting in a bottle.

based on stats the under/over for oklahoma states punts should be between 4.64 and 6.64. Split that in half you get 5.64, so if you want the vbookie to get a bet going on something like this talk to o8ch. i bet he would be willing to throw down on vbet on whether or not theodore ginn jr takes one/two/more to the house.

But they don't play defense in the Big 12.

I have a question for the Ho on this matter. How does your team score 9 offensive points in its last game, have no turnovers, only go for 2 fourth downs (unsuccessfully), and still only punt the ball 4 times all game?

Does your team drain the clock that much?

ps. over/under stands at 7. We did it to a hot K State team last year.

WangHo: You sure talk a lot of shit for a guy with a moniker that sounds like it's Chinese for "penis prostitute", or what a gay sailor says when he sights an island full of homos. :roll1:

Ginn not only leads the NCAA in punt return average, he leads every other returner, save one, by over nine yards per return...and the guy that's runner-up and is "close" is 4.5 yards per return behind. Ginn also has 4 TDs on only 14 returns. Hawaii's Chad Owens had his 4 TDs (prior to his 5th TD in today's bowl game) on 31 returns (over twice as many). I can all but guarantee you that if Ginn fields 5-6 punts against you guys, he'll take at least one back.

WangHo- Last year when we played K-State and we had to deal with Daron Sproles I believe most of us buckeyes were very worried about him.

This year you guys must have someone to worry about just like I think most of us worry bout Morency? If not Ginn then who? I'd put money its ginn, but you won't admitt that our Kick Return game is very very good. Its just not ginn, but its the whole system. For instance try kicking to Maurice Hall on kick offs if you really wanna start things up.

Bottom line is our special teams is probably the best in the nation. This includes. Punting,Punt Return, Kick off, Kick Return, and field Goals. if you look at the numbers we have to be near the top, and if not the numbers are probably scewed or things like that. Seeing as our special teams is probably the best I think any team should be worried about us in that phase. I know that I still hold my breath when we punt and kick the ball off, even though no one has returned one on us. So your reaction to Ginn is kind of confusing?

Now I'm not too full of our buckeyes because I know we will have problems on offense, and maybe on defense. So I'm just not a dihard fan, but I also know a good special teams, offense, or defense when I see one.

I just want to know if these Okie State guys have actually seen TGII play? I've seen a lot of college football players, and TGII is definitely the most dangerous guy with the ball in his hands that i've ever seen. Not just for freshmen, but for everybody. You say your punt defense is 79th in the country? Last I checked that's pretty crappy. We should put an over/under on how many TDs Ginn scores. I'd go with 2.5. (To break up the ties :))

Stats per NCAA

Note that both punters are good for about 43 yards... and the net punting difference is about 2 yards in Ohio State's favor... and the team return stats also differ by about 2 yards. Well that's fine until you look at the individual stats...Ohio State has about a 5-6 yard advantage in Kickoff returns, and about a 19 yard advantage in Punt returns--translation, our top guys are more likely to bust a big return (and remember that our team return stats are skewed a bit by several weeks of searching for the right personnel).

Does this mean it will be a special teams blowout? Hell, no. But the potential is there. Really, what I take from this is that we'll gain maybe 5-7 yards of field each time we exchange punts. The reality is, however, that with morency on your side, more often than not you bunch will more the sticks at least once, so OSU can't necessarily rely on that... but I'd expect if not a TGII TD, then at least one close call.

Come on...we have the best return man and the best PK in the country. Not to mention every other aspect of our special teams has been really solid. So I'm gonna go on a limb and say it will be a special teams blowout.

I'm trying to be pessimistic, cynical, and play devil's advocate until the game.

In other words, I'm preparing for the worst, so I can really enjoy it when the best happens :)

That and it's just a gloomy sort of day around here.

More than once this season, an Ohio State coach called the Buckeyes’ return game "electrifying."

Using that analogy, by the end of the year Ted Ginn Jr., Santonio Holmes, Maurice Hall and the rest of the high-voltage return crews were staggering around emitting a steady crackle, with lightning bolts shooting from their ears.

They certainly helped shock Ohio State to life. After finding themselves at 3-3, the Buckeyes finished the regular season 7-4 and are ranked 24 th in the nation.

While the often-moribund offense finished the season ranked 100 th in the nation and the defense slipped a bit from its dominance of 2002 and 2003, OSU’s return games provided spark after spark.

In the last seven games, the Buckeyes returned five punts for touchdowns. Ginn is tops in the nation, averaging 26.9 yards, and tied an NCAA record with four TDs.

The punt-return team ranks second nationally, and the kickoff team ranks 12 th. It proved to be the rising tide that floated all Buckeyes boats.

"There’s an overwhelming, infectious energy about it that spreads," said receivers coach Darrell Hazell, who helped coach the returns. "When you feel that every time you take the field you have a chance to score, that’s a nice feeling to have.

"It’s definitely something that gets fans jacked up, and you can only imagine how much it gets players jacked up."

Branden Joe concurred. A key blocker on the return units, he acknowledged the boost that big returns provided.

"It’s huge," Joe said. "When you get big plays on special teams, it lifts a lot of weight off both sides of the ball. We work hard at it, and we really enjoy it when big plays happen."

After OSU had rebounded from a threegame losing streak to record two straight wins, coach Jim Tressel was asked what positive factors he thought had turned the season around.

The first thing out of his mouth was not quarterback Troy Smith, improved offensive-line play or stingier defense.

"The thing that would jump into my mind that we’ve done better this year than any year I can remember since I’ve been here is our return game," Tressel said. "I remember discussions (in 2003) about how come we’re last in the league, and I think our return games have made a huge impact for us, given us a chance.

"They’ve given us some energy and electricity."

Tressel credited Hazell for part of the resurgence. Last season, OSU ranked 105 th nationally in both punt and kick returns.

Hazell had coached returns at Rutgers before coming to OSU this season, and Tressel gave him much of the responsibility for overseeing the new emphasis on that area.

"Darrell has done a great job with our return units with the passion he brings to it," Tressel said. "He has a lot of confidence in the system, that great ability to teach and the ability to get you to believe what he’s trying to teach by showing evidence that, ‘If you do this, good things will happen.’ "

Hazell was not the only assistant involved. Mark Snyder, Joe Daniels, Mel Tucker, Dick Tressel and Luke Fickell all have responsibilities in the return-game effort.

Some of the more important return moments of the year include:

• Sept. 4 vs. Cincinnati: After Cincinnati kicked a field goal to cut OSU’s lead to 10-6, Hall returned the kickoff 43 yards. The Buckeyes drove for a touchdown and never looked back in a 27-6 season-opening win.

• Oct. 30 vs. Penn State: The Nittany Lions scored to cut OSU’s lead to 14-7. Hall ran back the kickoff 62 yards, setting up a momentum-seizing TD in an eventual 21-10 win.

• Nov. 20 vs. Michigan: The Buckeyes had dominated the second quarter but still led just 20-14 in the third when Ginn turned in an eye-popping 82-yard punt return for a TD. Energized, OSU was not seriously threatened again and went on to a 37-21 win.

Talking about Ginn’s play afterward, the normally understated Jim Tressel said things like, "he’s special," and "I was shocked."

That can happen when you mess with electricity.
