WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Of course, two 49ers turnovers on special teams will long be remembered as critical plays in their exit from the playoffs. Veteran Ted Ginn, who did not fumble last season while handling 56 punts and 29 kickoffs, was out with a knee injury. And Kyle Williams took his place.

Ginn tested the free-agent market but could not find a team that envisioned him as a major contributor on offense. He returned to the 49ers on a one-year contract. Ginn did not participate in any 49ers practices during the offseason as he nursed a right knee injury. Toward the end of the offseason program, Ginn looked to be nearing 100-percent speed during his workouts.

Williams is in line to be back as Ginn's backup in the return game. Williams was at the front of the line in handling kickoffs and punts during the offseason program.

Healthy, stronger Ginn reports with 49ers rookies
July 23, 2012

SANTA CLARA -- Rookies and selected veterans took to the 49ers practice field as a prelude to training camp that begins with the first full-squad workout on Friday.

The selected veterans include all quarterbacks -- Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, Josh Johnson and Scott Tolzien -- as well as all players who rehabbed injuries in the offseason.

Receiver Ted Ginn and tight end Delanie Walker, both of whom nursed knee injuries during the offseason program, reported to training camp early. Also, newly signed defensive back Darcel McBath was on the field because he recovered this offseason from a broken arm.

Ginn was still slowed during the offseason by the same injury that kept him out of the NFC championship game. He had knee and ankle problems late in the season. But he reported to camp and passed his physical.

"This was the test, come in early and get with these young guys, run around, fly around, do certain things to see where I'm at," Ginn said on Monday. "As it's been going, I give myself an A-plus right now."

Ginn is noticeably bigger as camp opens. He said took advantage of his inability to practice during the offseason program by spending more time in the weight room. He gained about 10 pounds from last season and now weighs 185 pounds, he said.

"(I) had some time to really hit the weight room and work on upper body and get stronger," Ginn said.

After he was sidelined during the 49ers' offseason workout program because of an injury in last season's playoffs, wide receiver Ted Ginn declared himself healthy Monday and ready for the start of training camp.

Following a pre-training-camp practice with mostly rookies, Ginn gave himself high marks. The 49ers listed Ginn with a knee injury after he was injured in a divisional playoff win against the Saints. On Monday, Ginn said he was dealing with a "couple of injuries" in the offseason, but didn't offer specifics.

"This right here really was the test," Ginn said. To "get here early and get with these young guys, run around ... do certain things out there to see where I'm at. As I've been going, I can give myself an A-plus right now."

Ginn passes first test in return to practice field
Posted by Cam Inman on July 23rd, 2012

Ted Ginn Jr. gave himself an A+ upon his long-awaited return to the 49ers practice field Monday.

?This right here was really the test,? said Ginn, who missed the team?s offseason workouts because of lingering leg injuries that also sidelined him in the NFC Championship Game.

Monday marked the first time rookies, all four quarterbacks and selected veterans could practice in advance of Friday?s first full team practice of training camp. All veterans must report Thursday (and they can?t practice any earlier unless they were on last year?s practice squad or are coming off an injury).

Ginn?s objective: ?Come in early with the young guys, fly around and do certain things out there to see where I?m at. I give myself an A+ right now.?

Needless to say, Ginn?s sure-handed approach on punt returns was sorely missed in the NFC final, where replacement Kyle Williams botched two returns in the 20-17 defeat to the New York Giants.

Aside from individual conditioning, Ginn spent the offseason workouts observing practices and tutoring younger receivers and potential returns.

A.J. Jenkins, this year?s first-round draft pick, said he?s been sought advice from Ginn on how to catch punts, a task Jenkins never did atIllinois. Ginn?s message: Learn the flights of the ball, don?t shy away from it, get under it fast and learn how to cope with the Bay Area wind.

?It?s a lot more comfortable knowing you have Ted Ginn back there trying to coach you up, and you have one of the best punters in the league kicking it to you,? Jenkins said.

Ginn is entering his sixth season, and third with the 49ers. His two returns for touchdowns in last season?s opener keyed a win over the Seattle Seahawks. But his availability late in the season was jeopardized by a Dec. 19 injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ginn used the time away from the practice field to strengthen his upper body in the weight room. He estimated that he tacked on 10 pounds to his now 185-pound frame.

Where Ginn stands
August, 10, 2012
By Mike Sando | ESPN.com

Ted Ginn Jr. impressed at San Francisco 49ers training camp when I visited there in 2010.

The speedy receiver suffered an injury in Week 1 that year. He caught only 12 passes all season.

Ginn will start opposite Michael Crabtree in the 49ers' exhibition opener against Minnesota on Friday night. He has, by all accounts, enjoyed a strong camp. But with six receiving touchdowns in five NFL seasons, it's tough to project a significant role for him. He has three starts over the past two seasons, all in 2011.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com passes along Jim Harbaugh's thoughts on Ginn: "Ted's had a great camp -- really pleased with Ted. He's catching the ball, he's blocking, he's playing all the positions -- the X, the Z, the slot. He's doing it all. He's running good, getting in and out of his cuts."

San Francisco 49ers' Ted Ginn Jr. thrilled with NFL's new jersey rule
By Cam Inman
[email protected]
Updated: 08/18/2012

HOUSTON -- Rookies aren't the only ones thrilled to see their names on an NFL jersey this exhibition season.

Sixth-year veteran Ted Ginn Jr. loves the new look of his 49ers uniform, which he'll pull on for Saturday's exhibition at Houston.

That's right, "Ginn Jr.," just as it reads on his back, at last.

"It's something I've been trying to do for a long time," Ginn said, "but wasn't able to do until RG3 came into the league."

RG3 would be Robert Griffin III, last year's Heisman Trophy winner who was drafted second overall by the Washington Redskins. Sharing initials with the league's commissioner, Roger Goodell, perhaps carries clout.

This season, the NFL is allowing players to wear generational titles on their uniforms. Some call it the "RG3 Rule." Ginn calls it great.

"When you think about the pros, it should be like that," Ginn said. "I never understood why they didn't put 'Jr.' or 'III' on the backs of jerseys. Every day I get to see 'Jr.' on my jersey."

The first day he saw it, he took a picture on his phone and sent it to his father, an accomplished coach at Glenville High in Cleveland.

Ted Ginn Sr. not only loved the picture, he nearly became a member of the 49ers this summer, too. Coach Jim Harbaugh invited the elder Ginn to intern on his staff as part of the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship, which Walsh set up 25 years ago in his penultimate season as the 49ers coach.

"It was hard for him to get up and walk away from the (Glenville) program," Ginn Jr. said. "He's more dedicated to the kids than the actual coaching."

Ginn still among 49ers' starting receiver options
August 23, 2012

863267.jpg

Ted Ginn caught 19 passes for 220 yards last season.

SANTA CLARA -- While Michael Crabtree is all alone on the 49ers' depth chart at one wide receiver spot, there's been an either/or scenario on the other side.

All the attention this training camp has been on additions Randy Moss and Mario Manningham. Quietly, Ted Ginn is listed first among the three receivers that coach Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers consider "starters."

And that's exactly the way Ginn views himself, too.

Ginn will earn a 49ers roster spot based primarily on his irreplaceable skills fielding punts and returning kickoffs. But he said he considers himself a wide receiver, first and foremost.

After sitting out the offseason program with the same knee injury that kept him out of the NFC Championship, Ginn said he believes he has been given a fair chance during training camp to contribute as a wideout.

"Yeah, especially coming off the injury and not being able to be in OTAs and the different little spotlights that you'd be able to showcase yourself," Ginn said. "And come in as an older guy in camp, and everybody has been able to show what they have, and still be considered as a starter or in that elite group is a blessing."

Ginn Still Wants to Make an Impact as a Wide Receiver
Niners' fine kick and punt returner has had a fine camp this summer as a pass catcher
By Doug Williams
Friday, Aug 24, 2012

Ted Ginn Jr. looks at himself in the mirror and sees an NFL wide receiver.

He sees one of the fastest players on the 49ers roster and a guy who once caught 58 passes for Miami in 2008, just two years after leaving Ohio State where he was an All-American.

When others look at Ginn, however, they see kick returner first, wide receiver second.

It?s a perception the third-year 49er is constantly working to change.

Ginn, 27, who started San Francisco?s first exhibition game against Minnesota, is definitely in the 49ers? mix at the wide receiver position, along with Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, top draft pick A.J. Jenkins and Kyle Williams. The 49ers, after all, re-signed Ginn as a free agent this offseason after he played 2011 and 2010 in San Francisco.

That re-signing, however, widely was viewed as a way to ensure the 49ers? kick- and punt-return teams remained dangerous.

Ginn, one of the best in the league at both, last season averaged a career-best 27.6 yards on 29 kickoff returns and 12.3 yards on 38 punt returns ? and had touchdowns in both categories.

As a receiver last season, he had just 19 receptions for 220 yards and no touchdowns. In two seasons with San Francisco, he?s had just 31 total catches after making 128 in three seasons with the Dolphins.

This training camp, Ginn has tried to reassert himself as a wide receiver.

?That?s how I?ve been trying to showcase myself as an NFL player,? he told Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.

Ted Ginn Jr. injures ankle
Eric Branch
Sunday, August 26, 2012

DENVER --

After finishing the 2011 season on the sideline, it's possible 49ers wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. will begin 2012 in the same spot.

Ginn limped off the field after he was tackled around the right ankle by Broncos linebacker Steven Johnson on a 9-yard reverse in the third quarter of San Francisco's 29-24 preseason win Sunday.

Ginn was taken to the locker room, and X-rays were negative, head coach Jim Harbaugh said. Ginn missed the final two games of the 2011 regular season with a sprained ankle. He then returned for the NFC divisional playoffs, but sustained a knee injury that kept him out of offseason workouts.

Jacobs, Ginn look doubtful for opener
September 6, 2012

SANTA CLARA -- Running back Brandon Jacobs and wide receiver Ted Ginn look doubtful for the 49ers' season opener Sunday at Green Bay after sitting out Thursday's practice.

Jacobs has not practiced since sustaining a left knee sprain Aug. 18 against the Houston Texans. Ginn has been out since sustaining a right ankle sprain Aug. 26 at Denver.

Ginn, Jacobs unlikely to play against Lions

Ted Ginn and Brandon Jacobs were not on hand for the start of 49ers practice, making them very unlikely to play Sunday against the Lions. Ginn (ankle) went through warmups with his teammates, and he appears close to returning to the lineup. When practice began, however, he went off to a side field to work with trainers.

Ginn?s return to practice field apparently doesn?t last long

Posted by Cam Inman on September 19th, 2012 at 2:36 pm | Categorized as Uncategorized

(Updated with official injury report: See bottom of post)

Ted Ginn Jr. suited up and took the practice field Wednesday for the first time since an Aug. 26 ankle injury. But after catching a few passes in one-on-none drills, Ginn pulled himself from the warmups.

As team drills began (and the media access ended), Ginn talked with coach Jim Harbaugh and headed to a side field for, presumably, more individual conditioning.

Ginn looked spry in his first initial routes. While fellow receivers Michael Crabtree and Kyle Williams continued to catch passes from Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick, Ginn did not go out on any patterns and eventually took his helmet off and knelt on the field.

Ginn injured his right ankle in an Aug. 26 exhibition at Denver.

49ers special teams: Ted Ginn, Andy Lee dominate
By David Fucillo on Oct 19

20121018_kkt_st3_023.0_standard_709.0.jpg

Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

In previewing the 49ers-Seahawks Thursday Night Football contest, both Kenneth Arthur and I pointed out the importance of special teams in this game (Seahawks video, 49ers video). While I am not always right, I think I hit the nail on the head with this one. There were big special teams plays that did not have a huge impact, but the overall tone of special teams strongly favored the 49ers, and was a difference-maker.

The two big names we saw on special teams for the 49ers were Ted Ginn Jr. and Andy Lee. They both had big games thanks in part to their own skills, and in part due to the strong units surrounding them. Entering this game, the 49ers had struggled quite a bit on special teams. Andy Lee still had a strong leg, and Kyle Williams had some solid kick returns, but the various aspects of special teams were performing under par compared to last season.

Ted Ginn was the highest profile special teams performer on Thursday Night Football. Ginn had three punt returns for 70 yards, with a long of 38 yards followed by a pair of 16-yard returns. The 49ers only managed three points off his big returns, which is obviously disappointing. However, given the lack of consistency in the return game this season, it was nice to see several big returns from Ginn. He had one return where he ended up losing a couple yards trying to cross the field, but he has built up enough cred otherwise to get away with that every so often.
