CLEVELAND - Ted Ginn Jr., former Ohio State University wide receiver now San Francisco 49ers punt returner, is on a mission trip with Pros For Africa, helping hundreds of children in Uganda.

The trip this year consisted of Ginn and teammate NaVorro Bowman joining a group of other professionals, who include recently retired wide receiver Johnny Knox from the Chicago Bears.

The Pros For Africa team left March 2 for Uganda where they've been partnering with the Starkey Hearing Foundation to provide hearing aids to those in need throughout the African country.

The group will also be going to the northern Ugandan town of Gulu to visit Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe, a 2007 CNN hero award winner who runs St. Monica?s Tailoring Center. She gives women who have survived capture by the Lords Resistance Army throughout the region a new chance at a healthy and happy life for themselves and their children.

A trip to Hope North in northern Uganda, which is a boys school supported by actor Forrest Whitaker, is also scheduled on the trip.

The nonprofit, co-founded by NFL players Adrian Peterson, Tommie Harris and Roy Williams, and Mark Clayton, has taken more than 30 NFL players with them on this life-changing journey.

Ginn, the former Dolphins and 49ers return ace could be what the Bengals are looking for at receiver and on special teams, but mainly as a returner. A Cleveland native who was a first-round pick of the Dolphins out of Ohio State in 2007, Ginn has six career return touchdowns with three each coming off punts and kickoffs. He also has 161 career catches for a 12.7-yard average, six for touchdowns, but he had just two catches for a yard last season.

He would fit the role that free-agent wide receiver Brandon Tate filled last year as a kick returner who split time with punt returner Adam Jones while taking a few snaps as an outside receiver. With A.J. Green, Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones taking the bulk of those later in the season, Tate ended up with 278 plays and 13 catches for 211 yards. Ginn also has worn Tate's No. 19 his entire NFL career.

Meanwhile, Ginn, an Ohio State product heading into his seventh season, would bring six career return touchdowns and most likely take Brandon Tate's spot behind Sanu, A.J. Green, Marvin Jones and Andrew Hawkins.

"We haven't totally slammed the door; he shouldn't be an expensive person," Lewis said. "It was a good visit to get some things done and take a look at him physically and the coaches to spend a little time with him and just see if he's the right fit for us. I think there's something he can add to us. He would like to be a little closer to home. There are some positives."

Rivera excited about prospect of signing Ginn

PHOENIX

Panthers coach Ron Rivera did not hide his excitement about the prospect of acquiring receiver/returner Ted Ginn Jr., a free agent who visited the Panthers this week and left with a contract offer.

Ginn, who played with San Francisco last season, also reportedly has an offer from Cincinnati.

?Ted came in and did a nice job. I know our guys really spoke highly of his visit,? Rivera said Wednesday at the NFC coaches breakfast at the league meetings.

?The interesting thing about Ted is he gives us some depth at wide receiver who can challenge for playing time opportunity. But also he's got special teams value, which is big.?

Ginn, 27, a first-round pick out of Ohio State in 2007, has six career touchdown returns ? three on punt returns and three on kickoffs.

?He's an explosive guy coming off the line of scrimmage, too,? Rivera said. ?So there's some huge pluses for us as far as hoping to be able to bring a guy like that into the fold.?

The Carolina Panthers gave Ted Ginn Jr. a contract offer after he visited with the team this week, and coach Ron Rivera was raving Wednesday about the wide receiver/return man's potential if he chooses to sign with the Panthers, according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

?Ted came in and did a nice job. I know our guys really spoke highly of his visit,? Rivera said.

?The interesting thing about Ted is he gives us some depth at wide receiver who can challenge for playing time opportunity. But also he's got special teams value, which is big.?

The Cincinnati Bengals also reportedly have an offer on the table to Ginn, so he has at least a couple of options to mull over. The Detroit Lions are amongst other teams who may have some interest in Ginn if he doesn't pull the trigger with the Panthers or Bengals. He never earned a serious role as a wide receiver during his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, but perhaps he could find a niche as a pass-catcher with the Panthers.
