WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

I just watched that and I haven't watched Teddy in a long time.

The comparisons to ANY recruit and Teddy need to stop. There aren't many that have ever played the college game that have had the kind of skill set that Teddy had in college.

Kid was unreal. Oh if he were coming in this year.

49ers Will Weigh Ginn's Worth as Return Man
Though his impact as a receiver has been minimal, his results on special teams were a big part of 49ers' success in 2011
By Doug Williams

As a wide receiver, Ted Ginn Jr. hasn?t had much of an impact in the NFL. With just 31 catches over his last two seasons, he?s played just a supporting role in the San Francisco 49ers offense.

As a return man, however, Ginn has star power.

The question now is, how much is that worth to the 49ers?

Ginn is an unrestricted free agent on a team that needs to make significant upgrades to its corps of receivers. Only wideouts Michael Crabtree and Kyle Williams are under contract for 2012 and the Niners are looking to add an impact player or two through free agency or the draft to make their passing game more of a threat than it was in 2012.

Just before the 2011 season, Ginn agreed to restructure his deal ? some reports indicated he agreed because the team was thinking of cutting him ? to significantly lower his base salary while also eliminating the sixth year of the rookie contract he signed with the Dolphins he was taken in the first round of the 2007 draft.

Pro Football Talk?s Mike Florio reported last September that the new deal lowered Ginn?s base from $2.2 million in 2011 to $1 million, with the possibility of earning $400,000 in incentives.

More importantly, it erased the sixth year of the deal that would have been 2012.

Now, Ginn?s status is uncertain.

As a receiver, the former Ohio State star has had minimal impact in San Francisco. In 2011 he made just 19 catches for 220 yards and no TDs; the year before, after being acquired from Miami, he caught just 12 balls for 163 yards and one score. His biggest season came in 2008, when he had a 56-catch year for the Dolphins, averaged 14.1 yards per reception with two TDs.

As a return man, though, Ginn has been a game-breaker.

In the 2011 season opener vs. the Seattle Seahawks, Ginn returned both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns, two of six career return TDs in the NFL.

This past season, Ginn ranked third in the NFL in average yards per kickoff return (27.6) and No. 4 in average yards per punt return (12.3).

His production helped the 49ers ? who had some of the best special teams in the league ? consistently win the battle of field position with opponents. And the fact he missed the NFC Championship Game with an injury ? putting Williams on the spot in his place ? eventually proved fatal for the 49ers? Super Bowl chances in their overtime loss to the Giants.

Would the outcome have been different if Ginn had been able to return kicks and punts that day? We?ll never know.

So now, with the 49ers on the hunt for wide receivers ? while also needing to spend money to keep such free agents as quarterback Alex Smith, cornerback Carlos Rogers and safety Dashon Goldson -- will GM Trent Baalke decide it?s worth the money to re-sign Ginn, or let him go and seek a cheaper or younger option on returns through the draft or free agency?

After Ginn?s performance as a return man in 2011, it?s unlikely San Francisco will be able to get Ginn again for a base as low as $1 million.

Ginn acknowledged last summer, in signing the restructured deal, that he wanted to stay in San Francisco. After his two-TD game vs. the Seahawks in September, Ginn told the Associated Press:

?I?m a team player. It?s not always about money. You come in, you play the game and as you play the game, good things should happen for you.?

Soon, he?ll know if that includes staying in San Francisco

Ginn, Morgan closing in on free agency
March 8, 2012

In exchange for Ted Ginn accepting a $1.2 million pay cut at the start of last season, the 49ers agreed to rip up the final year of his contract to enable him to become a free agent.

So with free agency set to begin on Tuesday at 1 p.m. (PT), it would only make sense that Ginn would take advantage of the situation to see what's available to him on the open market.

Things can happen quickly this time of year, but there appears to be a strong possibility Ginn and Joshua Morgan will test the free-agent market next week.

Ginn caught just 19 passes for 220 yards in 14 games with three starts, but his most value to the 49ers comes as a return man. Morgan was playing well when his season came to an end. He caught 15 passes for 220 yards in five games.

The Detroit Lions are looking at San Francisco 49ers receiver Ted Ginn Jr. to possibly become its fourth receiver when he visits Allen Park this week.

San Francisco 49ers free agent receiver Tedd Ginn Jr. is going to visit the Detroit Lions either today or tomorrow, according to sources.

The Lions are looking for a fourth receiver to play behind Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Titus Young. Detroit had Maurice Stovall and Rashied Davis on its roster last season, but management decided to let each player test free agency and are looking in a different direction.

Ginn, a former first round pick in 2007, could possibly replace Logan as Detroit's returner.

He played for the Miami Dolphins from 2007 to 2009 before being traded to San Francisco for a fifth-round pick in 2010.

Last season, Ginn returned a kickoff (102 yards) and a punt (55 yards) for two touchdowns within 59 seconds against Seattle. He had 19 receptions for 220 yards in 2011. Ginn has 159 receptions for 2,047 yards and six touchdowns in his five-year career.

Ted Ginn visits Lions, leaves without a contract
March 15, 2012
By Dave Birkett
Detroit Free Press Sports Writer

Ted Ginn finished his visit with the Detroit Lions this afternoon but is leaving town without a contract.

?I enjoyed myself here today,? Ginn said. ?A great group of coaches all the way around. As far as a commitment, it?s just a little early right now. I?m going to see my options, but I like the Lions.?

Ginn, who played the last two years with the San Francisco 49ers after starting his career with the Miami Dolphins, said he doesn?t know of any other visits he has scheduled, but he plans ?to take it slow, take my time and just stick with it.?

After playing primarily as a return specialist through his first five NFL seasons, Ginn said he?s looking for a team that will utilize him more as a receiver.

The Lions like Ginn?s deep speed and would slot him as their No. 4 receiver, behind Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Titus Young. He likely also would handle return duties.

?I want to be known as a receiver, not a specialist guy, not a punt returner, kickoff returner,? Ginn said. ?I want to be known as an actual receiver, and that was some of the things that they expressed in here for me today that I enjoyed.

?I?m six years in now. I just want to be able to just be a receiver, and special teams is given.?
