Receiver Ted Ginn left the game after sustaining an ankle sprain on the opening kickoff of the second half. A team source indicated that X-rays were negative, but his status for Saturday's game against the Seattle Seahawks is uncertain.
Ginn returned to the sideline in the second half and watched the remainder of the game in street clothes without the use of crutches.
No Ginn ? Ted Ginn missed his second practice this week with a sprained ankle, increasing the likelihood that the hero of the 49ers' Week 1 victory over the Seahawks won't be available for Saturday's Round 2.On Sept. 11, the 49ers roared to 16-0 halftime lead, but Seattle closed to within 19-17 in the fourth quarter. Ginn, however, put the game out of reach with touchdowns on a 102-yard kickoff return and a 55-yard punt return.Kyle Williams said Thursday the plan is for him to handle punt returns and kickoffs if Ginn can't play. Asked if that would curtail his snaps at wide receiver, Williams said it shouldn't."Ted's been doing it all year," Williams said. "So there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to fill in for these guys on special teams."
Ginn Jr.: ?It kind of feels like my college days at Ohio St.?
Posted on December 26, 2011 by Grant Cohn
SANTA CLARA ? Ted Ginn Jr., who sprained his left ankle on a second-half kickoff against the Pittsburgh Steelers, spoke at his locker this morning. Here?s what he said.
Q: Do you think you?re going to play this Sunday against the Rams?
GINN JR.: I don?t know right now. I?ll leave it up to the players and the coaches.
Q: When you were warming up in Seattle did you think you had a chance of playing or were you just stretching?
GINN JR.: I?m not trying to really rush it.
Q: For you it?s all about the playoffs?
GINN JR.: I wouldn?t say that. It?s about the next game. Just kind of go day-by-day. I don?t want to think like that. I just want to take it day-by-day and hope that as the days go on I continue to heal.
Q: You injured your left ankle?
GINN JR.: Yeah.
Q: It wasn?t a high ankle sprain?
GINN JR.: No.
GINN JR.: It kind of feels like my college days at Ohio St. Everybody?s just for everybody. We?re just here for each other. We play for one another, we play for our coaches. Our coaches coach for one another and that?s all you can really ask. This year it?s not about who scores or who?s running the ball, it?s just about getting a ?W.? It?s just something that grows and comes with time. If you go through so many things as far as losing and being on losing teams, we try to change the culture and somehow we can change it by just being relentless and just being happy to have somebody next to you. I?m grateful to play with Frank Gore. Frank might be grateful to play with me. Take the little things that everyone can do and try to make them stand out. Forget who is who ? just play for the jersey.
Ted Ginn Jr., returner/wide receiver
Before the season, Ginn took a pay cut. His salary reportedly got slashed from $2.2 million to $1 million. He responded in valiant fashion, clinching the season-opening win over Seattle with two fourth-quarter returns for touchdowns.
No one before in 49ers history had returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns in the same game, much less in the same minute. Ginn pulled off that feat with a 102-kickoff return and 55-yard punt return. Not bad for a guy who hadn't won the kickoff-return job over rookie Kendall Hunter until the eve of the opener.
Ginn didn't take back any of his other 28 kickoff returns for a touchdown this regular season. But his average of 27.6 yards per return ranked third in the NFL behind the New York Jets' Joe McKnight (31.6 yards) and the Green Bay Packers' Randall Cobb (27.7).
Aside from kickoffs, Ginn also proved clutch on punt returns, but not only because of the league's fourth-best average of 12.3 yards per return. Ginn has not fumbled this season, not on any kickoff returns, punt returns or his 19 receptions.

Injury notes: The 49ers got receiver Ted Ginn Jr. back from injury, but Ginn spent as much time on the exercise bike as on the field, it seemed. His knee was a problem. Ginn had trouble getting much traction in the return game and was called for pass interference late in the third quarter.
49ers injury report: Ginn limping
January 16, 2012
SANTA CLARA -- Receiver Ted Ginn had a noticeable limp Monday morning as he arrived at the 49ers' practice facility for treatment on his injured right knee.
Ginn's status for the 49ers' NFC Championship Game on Sunday against the New York Giants remains uncertain after he left Saturday's game twice with the injury.
When the 49ers' medical staff assisted Ginn off the field in the third quarter, they examined his right kneecap. He did not return to action in the 49ers' 36-32 victory over the New Orleans Saints.
Coach Jim Harbaugh did not reveal any specifics about 49ers injuries during his Monday press conference. When asked if Ginn sustained an injury that would rule him out for Sunday's game, Harbaugh answered, "Not that I'm aware of."
Ginn's knee sidelines him from week of practices
January 20, 2012,
SANTA CLARA -- Receiver Ted Ginn did not participate in any of the 49ers practices this week because of a right knee injury, and he appears doubtful for the NFC Championship Game.
Officially, the 49ers listed Ginn as "questionable," along with five other players on the team's injury report. But Ginn is the only 49ers player who was unable to practice during the week.
If Ginn is unable to play, second-year player Kyle Williams would start at receiver, alongside Michael Crabtree. Williams would also handle punt-return duties, with Kendall Hunter returning kickoffs.
Ted Ginn not expected to play
Posted by Mike Florio on January 22, 2012
49ers return specialist Ted Ginn, an impending free agent who could make a lot of money for himself with a big return or two tonight against the Giants, officially will be a game-time decision, due to a knee injury suffered last Saturday against the Saints.
Per a league source, the decision is expected to be that Ginn won?t play.
Before the season, Ginn re-worked his contract to take less money for 2011. In exchange, the final year of the six-year rookie deal he signed in 2007 was thrown out.
The ninth overall pick by the Dolphins that year, Ginn was traded to San Fran in 2010. At times a potent return specialist, he has been a Desmond Howard-style disappointment as a receiver. Through five seasons, he?s averaging nearly 32 catches and nearly 410 yards per year, and as many career receiving touchdowns as return touchdowns ? six.
