WR/RB Lamaar "Flash" Thomas (transfer to New Mexico)

I wouldn't exactly say the "brought in McPhearson" as a HS recruit. He transferrred after he couldn't make it at Florida, no?

Actually, after originally committing to Zook at Florida McPhearson prepped for a year and then committed to Illinois. It's not like Florida and others didn't still want him (see http://www.alligator.org/pt2/050201recruit.php).

He was considered a huge get for Illinois at the time. Definitely not in high demand now, though. washingtonpost.com

The main purpose/question with geography is "where?"... In this case, "where" indicates that tOSU is closer to Maryland than Illinois is... The point you are making would rely more on social geography (the study of "where" in regards to how people gather and act in social settings) vs. basic geography which focuses on the location of places and features (in this case tOSU is closer to MD than Illinois)...

As for Thomas, the things that he says to the media are not as telling as the things he's saying out of the public eye, FWIW...

Isn't that what Kevin Koger did by first, telling the coaches he was coming to tOSU all the while saying to the media he was 50/50 and then ulimately committing to that smell up north?

Of course, I am not alluding that Thomas will end up @ scUM, or for that matter, Illinois...

What Koger said apart from the public eye changed depending on who he was speaking to...very good at telling certain people what they want to hear. As far as Thomas goes...of course he says everyone is even. Every recruit says that and most the times it isn't true but they likely want a bit of suspense to their recruitment. If not, then they would probably committ. Sometimes you will get a recruit that is telling the truth but if there is no line heard more than "everyone is even". I am still confident on Thomas.

Once again, Thomas could be telling the Illini staff exactly what he is telling the OSU people... didn't last year teach everyone something... I'll remain cautiously optimistic

Could be...however, I haven't heard Lamar name Illinois his leader in 5 or so updates in a row. He has been pretty consistent is saying so and that won't change in my eyes until he has a new leader. You have good reason to remain cautiously optimistic and I'm with you...I'm in no way conceeding Lamar to OSU, just saying we are in good shape.

One thing that people absolutely can not do in recruiting is attempt to parallel every recruit to one that came before him... Everyone is different, and situations are rarely ever the same... Just because recruit X handled his recruitment a certain way this year, last year, or 10 years ago, doesn't mean that recruit Y will do the same...
Caution is always good with recruiting, but you can't let caution cloud your judgment or decrease your optimism on a situation... You have to go case by case...
I for one feel that Thomas will be a Buckeye in the end, based on what I know of the situation... But that is my prediction, based on what I am comfortable stating from what I know and have heard... I'm not telling everyone to subscribe to my way of thinking, just to not so quickly dismiss info because we have been burned in the past by other recruits...

Exactly. Great post. I don't know why people attempt to compare so and so recruit this year with so and so recruit last year. Usually it's the people looking to be negative, so they look for a negative recruiting story from the previous years.

Forget quickest, that's fastest. I mean 10.16 is crazy fast.

As a side note anyone look at the stadiums in that clip from the voting site. Maybe it's OH football for you, but my old D-6 HS has a bigger stadium than any of those and it's basically in a corn field.

Lamar is extremely quick and on a sidenote...DJ Monroe sucks. How he is rated so highly I have no clue. Really doesn't close on the ball very quickly, horrible in run support, and has no size. Lamar Thomas was an easy vote over Monroe and is quicker than Barnes.

"On field speed comparable to Ginn Jr."
Rivals hits it on the nose there, some of these runs are rather "Ginn-esque"
Agreed. Just get the ball in his hands! When he gets around the end or gets out in the open, he's awfully hard to catch.

Would love to see more video with him catching as a WR or a RB split out wide. He's a playmaker in the Ginn/Small/Saine catagory for sure. Easy to see why we're recruiting him. Lamaar has a ton of potential and I'd love to see what our coaches can do with him, because we've got a bunch of positions for him to play!

I'm not sure how to set this all up, so I just cut and paste. Anyway, this is a link to vote for the quickest player in the 08' class. Thomas is leading by a good margin. I also noticed a video to the left from June on the top players in Maryland and they have Thomas #1. They said he qualified for the Junior Olympics in the 100 meter dash after running a 10.16!
Are you sure he ran that fast?

He's obviously ridiculously fast, but 10.16 isn't Ginn-esque, that's faster.. by a decent margin (of course, Ginn was a hurdler, but still). That's just insane.
I google'd it and I haven't seen any other sources that state he ran that fast.

Course it doesn't really matter what the track time is, but still...

He ran a 10.63 to win the MD class 3A 100M championship. That time would have won any of the other divisions by at least .1 as well. He also ran a 10.64 in the prelims.

At regionals he ran:

1st Round: 10.50
2nd Round: 10.60
Finals: 10.40

The Maryland 3A record for the 100m was 10.61 while the overall record was 10.44.

He also won the regional 200m with a time of 21.30. He ran a 21.54 for the State prelims but finished second in the finals with a 21.93 (the winning time was 21.88)

He ran a 6.41 55m at the State Indoor 2A/3A meet (the previous 3A record was 6.44) in a very competitive race where the top four finishers ran a 6.50 or better.

---To put it into perspective a bit Brandon Saine's Ohio State record 100m time is 10.38 and the fastest time ever run at the Ohio State championships is a 10.50, also by Brandon (Teddy's top 100 time is often quoted as 10.5 but I have no idea where or when that number comes from).

Thomas says Bucks are back to "even"

Saw someone posted about this on Scout, and thought I would post it on here and update everyone...

Free article by Allen Wallace:

Scout.com: Early October Decision?

Ohio State, Illinois, and Maryland are even as Lamaar heads into his official visits. He will visit Maryland on September 15th (West Virginia); Ohio State on September 22nd (Northwestern); and Illinois on September 29th (Penn State).

Man, I would love to have his speed in this recruiting class. Wonder if WVU trouncing Maryland would change his mind at all. Month left until he announces, and say he will decide after the Illinois visit.

:oh:
