I like Ray. But he's the only person I know who is almost a Senior in college, and hasn't gotten faster since high school. I think that's the reason for his running style. He expects to be able to outrun everybody, but his speed just hasn't progressed much.

I don't know about his progression, but I personally haven't seen the exposion in Ray that everyone seems to say he has. JMHO

I don't know if it comes down to his work ethic or what, but coming out of high school, he was arguably the most explosive player in the state. He's had some flashes of that explosiveness such as the punt return against OU this year, and in 2007 he had a reverse against Minnesota where he had an insane cut and run.

Well, I'd like to see Ray Small achieve what many of us hoped he would. A good place to start would be for him to behave in the fashion that Tressel and the team expect and for his father to get out of the limelight.

Ray needs to do his talking with his legs and hands.

nah, ray has all the tools in the world. while he's not going to qualify for the olympics anytime soon he's more than fast enough to stretch a defense and has been stupid wide open on many a occasion. he doesn't get credit for this as often as he should because on a hand full of occasions the ball was thrown to him while he was extremely open and he dropped it.

the only thing holding ray small back is ray small off the field. he's had some bad luck with the dropsies, but honestly he really hasn't had that many opportunties. what about the 07 penn state game where he had 4 or 5 steps on the defender? if the ball isn't underthrown its an easy td. people tend to forget how many plays the kid has made.

the kid has the talent. will he get the reps? time will tell.

Small's status: Receiver Ray Small was suspended for two games late last season before returning for the end of the year, and his father spoke of his son possibly leaving the program. As of the moment -- and things can always change -- receivers coach Darrell Hazell said Small is on track for spring ball.

"I think the big thing with Ray is he's got to be consistent with things we ask," Hazell said, "and he's done that this far. He's been very accountable the last few weeks. He's just got to be consistent through the springtime. Obviously, he's an outstanding player."

If Ray can get the mental part of the game of football and of life down, then the sky is the limit for him. I hope he buckles down, works his butt off and exceeds expectations his senior year in the S&G. Like JT always said, in order to have a successful season, the seniors need to have their best year in their senior campaign.

This may come off odd but the thing I like most about Small is his size. Tress and his crew has always gotten the most out of kids sitting around the 5'11" range on both sides of the ball - Holmes, Ginn, Gonzo, Smith, Doss, Fox, etc.

He has what is needed for success.

I've said it before, but I'd love to se Ray utilized out of the backfield in similar ways UF has done with Percy Harvin.

I don't think he's as explosive as Percy, but he certainly has similar characteristics, and similar size.

I agree, Small has good wiggle and shiftiness, it would also help him to be able to see the hits coming so he wouldn't blindsided. I'm not sure that he has the vision to be anywhere as explosive as Harvin. It will be interesting to see what wrinkles JT and staff add to the offense this year. I wonder if the staff will make a visit to another school to see their offense, I sure wouldn't mind a visit to UF to pick up some wrinkles.

Harvin got HUGE this past year too.

Small may have the height, speed and quickness of Harvin...doesn't have size and vision, in my opinion.

I'm not completely against him having runs, reverses, etc, but I think there's better suited players to use in a Harvin-type role (Lamaar Thomas and down the road Jordan Hall). Keep Ray out wide and stretch the field.

There are those who would like to see Lamar Thomas get those types of plays.

And now with Hall coming in, there's another guy to utilize in those types of plays - if we ever run them.

It's nice to have some different options to run some of those type of plays, God knows that the Gators have plenty and use them. Hopefully now that JT and the Staff have loaded up on ammunition, they'll be willing to fire the gun. This is Ray's last year to make the kind of impact expected of him, hopefully he feels the urgency of the clock ticking down and does everything in his power to strive toward reaching his potential.
