WR Joey Galloway (Official Thread)

Galloway fantasy a reality
By F. Dale Lolley, Staff writer, [email protected]

PITTSBURGH - Growing up along the banks of the Ohio River in Bellair, Ohio, just over an hour's drive from Pittsburgh, Joey Galloway used to put on his Lynn Swann jersey and pretend he was the Steelers' star receiver.
Galloway won't have to pretend any longer.

The 38-year-old veteran of 15 NFL seasons was signed earlier this week by the Steelers when they placed Limas Sweed on the non-football injury/illness list with an undisclosed illness.

He's spent the past few days digesting as much of his new team's playbook as possible to be ready to play Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.

One would think that a receiver with 689 receptions for 10,777 yards and 77 touchdowns wouldn't have too much trouble picking things up. But Galloway said it's not so easy.

"I got here (Tuesday). Give me my book and let's sit down and see how much you can get into your brain and how quickly it can stick," Galloway said. "You go from looking at it on paper, from talking it over with your coaches, and probably the biggest step is to stand in the huddle with the quarterback, who is used to talking to 10 other guys that know the plays pretty well. So I've got to get my ears prepared and be ready to grab these things off the air as he says them and hopefully not make too many mistakes."

Galloway: Patriots weren?t a ?good fit?

Former Patriots receiver Joey Galloway ? who had a brief but unceremonious run with New England during the 2009 season ? spoke with ESPN Radio?s Scott Van Pelt on Friday, and said ?it just wasn?t a good fit? for him with the Patriots.

The veteran receiver played in three games with the Patriots in 2009 and finished with seven catches for 67 yards, but never seemed comfortable in the New England offense. He was released in mid-October, and signed on Dec. 22 with the Steelers.

?It just wasn?t a good fit,? Galloway said. ?I had a different idea of what I was going there to do. I thought that I was going there to be the third receiver. I thought I was going there to help them stretch the field to go vertical, and once I got there, that just wasn?t the case. The third receiver in New England doesn?t a large role in much of the offense, and that?s in practice, that?s on game day.

?There was a lot of talk that me and Brady were having issues and we couldn?t get on the same page. Me and Tom Brady are great friends. I still talk to him. Great guy.

?But there is no page for the third receiver. We would go a week through practice. There would be one maybe two balls thrown to the third guy. It just wasn?t a good fit for what I thought I was going there to do.?

Fauria on Galloway: He didn't understand the offense

Former Patriots tight end Christian Fauria disputes Joey Galloway's assertions that he struggled in New England because of the limited role he was asked to play, saying Galloway's failure to grasp the Patriot offense was what led to reduced playing time and, ultimately, his release.

Speaking on ESPN Radio's Scott Van Pelt Show last week, Galloway said: "I had a different idea of what I was going there to do. I thought that I was going there to be the third receiver. I thought I was going there to help them stretch the field, to go vertical, and once I got there, that just wasn't the case. The third receiver in New England doesn't . . . play a large role in the offense, and that's in practice, that's on game day."

But on Comcast SportsNet's Sports Sunday with Michael Felger, Fauria -- a teammate of Galloway's in Seattle from 1995-99 -- says Galloway's problems were self-inflicted.

"Here's Joey Galloway's problem: He couldn't get the offense," Fauria told Felger. "That first game against Buffalo . . . the first thing he said to me was, 'Man, this is tough. This is harder than I thought.'

"It had nothing to do with the fact that he was the third wide receiver. If he gets open, they're going to get him the ball. The fact is, he didn't know where to line up . . . He's not used to being a third receiver. He's always [been the] No. 1 receiver. Now you say, 'Hey, Joey, guess what. You gotta learn the X, you gotta know the Z, you gotta know the F, you gotta know all these positions. You just can't line up as the Z any more.'

"To me, he didn't even look as fast as he used to. Why? Because he didn't know where he was going. It had nothing to do with his speed, or [that he was] losing a step; he just didn't get it.

"Nothing irritates Tom Brady more than a guy that just doesn't get it after you do it again and again and again."

Source: Galloway agrees to 1-year deal
By Adam Schefter
ESPN

The Washington Redskins reached an agreement with wide receiver Joey Galloway on a one-year contract that will give the 37-year-old wide receiver a chance to play his 16th NFL season, according to a league source.

Galloway will try to win a spot on the Redskins' roster when Washington gathers for its next minicamp in two weekends. The Redskins have been looking for another veteran wide receiver, and they believe Galloway has the chance to provide them with some long plays.

Galloway caught seven passes for 67 yards and no touchdowns last season, averaging 9.6 yards per catch while playing for New England and Pittsburgh. The former Ohio State receiver has 689 catches for a 15.6 average during an NFL career that began in 1995, but he hasn't had a TD catch since making six for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2007.

From 2004-2008, Galloway and Redskins general manager Bruce Allen worked together for the Buccaneers.

While together in Tampa, Galloway caught at least five touchdown passes in each of the first four seasons they spent together.

Report: Joey Galloway signed by Redskins

The Redskins have agreed to terms with veteran wide receiver Joey Galloway, according to a league source.

Galloway, 38, is a 15-year veteran who would provide leadership for a mostly young receiving corps if he makes the roster. He signed a one-year deal with the team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Galloway began last season with New England but played in only three games and was released in October. Pittsburgh picked him up late in December but he didn't appear in any games for the Steelers.

Galloway, who is joining his sixth NFL team, was with the Buccaneers when Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen was running Tampa Bay's front office.

He is a four-time Pro Bowl alternate and has tallied six seasons of 1,000-plus yards, though none since 2007. That year also marked the last season Galloway was a regular starter in the league.

The Redskins now have 10 wideouts under contract for next season. Last year, Antwaan Randle El was used as the team's the Redskins' third wide receiver, usually lining up out of the slot. Since his release, they've yet to sign a wideout that automatically replaces Randle El in the rotation, though Galloway could be an option.

The team's other wide receivers include Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Marko Mitchell, Anthony Armstronng, Marques Hagans, James Robinson and Roydell Williams. They also drafted UCLA's Terrence Austin laast weekend.

Joey Galloway brings experience, leadership to Redskins' WRs

There was no mistaking newly-signed wide receiver Joey Galloway among the large number of wide receivers who were in the Redskins' minicamp last weekend. Not with a salt-and-pepper beard that gives away the age of the 38-year-old wideout entering his 16th season in the NFL.

Signed to a contract shortly after the team's first minicamp last month, Galloway'provides another veteran voice and more experience to a unit that has lacked a proven threat behind No. 1 receiver Santana Moss.

What Galloway's precise role in the offense could be has not been made clear. Right now he could be considered the No. 4 receiver behind Moss and third-year wideouts Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. The veteran said coaches have not discussed with him the specifics of what his role could be.

"Not at all," he said. "No, it's strap on my helmet, go out there and get to work."

But with a career forged around speed and the ability to get deep, the Redskins likely hope they may be able to recreate at least the production he turned in with Tampa Bay in 2007, when he caught 57 passes for 1,014 yards and six touchdowns.

"The guy still can run," said quarterback Donovan McNabb. "And it is good that myself and Phillip Daniels aren't the oldest ones on the team. But you know what the thing about it is, with the veteran leadership, it'll definitely help with the young guys we have on this team of being able to set the tone and knowing that he's been in certain situations and knows how to handle it. He's learning just like we are in this offense and he has an opportunity to make some big plays for us."

McNabb aged Galloway even more when he recalled watching his new teammate play with Warren Moon in Seattle in the 1990s. But despite his age, McNabb believes Galloway can still provide the same values he has given to quarterbacks since he first started playing in 1995.

"The thing about it is, when you have guys like that that come in and can get downfield," McNabb said, "you start to gain more and more confidence."

Hogs Haven:
How did Joey Galloway fare? Is the old horse slowing down in his second camp?

Hard to say because a guy like Galloway should look good now. He's getting open and catching passes. He caught a nice pass on the sideline today, then had Keenan McCardell shout at him to turn upfield and run about 15 more yards to a cone. I liked that McCardell kept on him to turn and run (Galloway didn't hear him at first; McCardell was about 15 yards away).

This is probably a better offense for him than New England's, which is considered a very difficult one to pick up. Still, I'm not confident he has a lot left (and I say that as a Buckeye myself). My guess is they'll hold onto him for a while, in part because of Santana Moss' knee. They need another speed guy at this spot just in case. Plus it has to be good for Malcolm and Devin to have guys like Galloway and McCardell working with them.

It's hard to imagine Selvish Capers or Erik Cook could perform well if called upon early in their first season, so guess time will tell.

WR Joey Galloway might be 38 years old, but that hasn?t stopped him from consistently getting separation from defensive backs in these OTAs. He got open between SS Reed Doughty and FS Kareem Moore on one play near the right sideline today, and McNabb hit him in a tight window with a beautiful throw for a 25-yard gain.

Galloway has gotten plenty of reps this spring because WR Santana Moss is recovering from knee surgery and WR Devin Thomas was out until last week with a hamstring injury. The Redskins have to be pleased with what they?ve seen so far. Galloway didn?t succeed in New England last year partly because he wasn?t a good fit in that program, so don?t put him in the ?finished? column quite yet. It?ll be interesting to see whether some of this spring success carries over to camp, when pads, the heat and the workload take a massive toll on players.

Galloway opens camp as Redskins starter
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 29, 2010

The Redskins drafted Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly two years ago to be the future of the wide receiver in position, but they reached far into the past when lining up their first team at the open of training camp on Thursday.

Joey Galloway lined up with the first team offense, while Thomas and Kelly caught passes from Rex Grossman on the second team.

This is probably motivational tactic directed at Thomas, but it's still an indictment of Thomas' abilities, as my good friend Evan Silva mentioned on Twitter today.

Galloway is 39 years old and has caught 20 combined passes over the last two years. Donovan McNabb is probably missing his talented young wideouts in Philadelphia right about now.

Redskins veteran camper Joey Galloway knows what to write home about
By Tracee Hamilton
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Joey Galloway doesn't enjoy training camp. Let's just get that out of the way, right from the start. He's in Ashburn, competing for a spot as a wide receiver for the Washington Redskins, but he doesn't enjoy training camp.

"They all feel fast. They all feel long. They all feel hard," he said Sunday when asked to compare the many training camps he's known. "If we come outside and the sun's out it's going to be a long day."

Still, he's out there, at 38 years old, in his do-rag and his -- what are they? Cutoff sweat pants? Long shorts? Capris? No, not capris. No matter. He's in camp -- his 16th, no less -- and doing well enough to play opposite Santana Moss with what appears to be the first team during drills. For a man of his age, er, experience, that's got to be a good feeling, right?

"We don't play tomorrow, so it doesn't really matter," Galloway said. "It's early. There are 12 receivers. We just started three days ago. The depth chart doesn't really matter."

So, how does he feel about the way he has played in this camp?

"I'm tired. It's camp."

One of the reasons Galloway has been so durable over the years is that he stays in ?Galloway Shape? meaning he is always ready to go. Whether or not he is on his way to training camp, he never stops working out.

?Part of the longevity for me is that I don?t get out of shape,? Galloway said. ?When it?s off-season, I may take a week off and that?s about it. I don?t allow myself to get really far out of shape because I understand that if you have to climb that ?hill? every single time to get back into shape that makes it a lot more difficult to do.?

Could there come a time when he might not ever get back into shape if he went too long without working out?

?I?m not going to find out. When they gave me a call to find out, when they asked me ?could I still do it? Was I still in ?Joey Galloway Shape??? I told them, ?yes. I am. I?m ready to go?.?

Joey Galloway watches, Anthony Armstrong catches

Thirty-eight year old receiver Joey Galloway has started two preseason games. But he's had zero catches and has only been targeted once. There's a reason for that, says Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan

"I've watched Joey catch a lot of balls in games throughout his career," Shanahan said. "He's come in here and did a great job in OTAs. We've had him obviously in camp here, evaluate him a lot. Pretty good shape.

"I wanted to get some of the guys that I really haven't been able to evaluate, some of the younger guys and see how they do in game situations. I think I know how Joey has handled himself for a lot of years, playing in games."
