Wilson: Galloway to work out for Kansas City
Pioli checking out former Patriot Aaron Wilson
October 20, 2009
Now that wide receiver Joey Galloway is a free agent after being cut by the New England Patriots, he might not be unemployed long.
Galloway is expected to try out for the Kansas City Chiefs today.
So, Bill Belichick's discard could become former Patriots executive Scott Pioli's new player.
The Chiefs' wide receiver position could use an influx of speed.
Galloway didn't make a good adjustment to the Patriots' scheme, but Kansas City might be a decent fit for him.

It would be nice to see him go to a contender.

Galloway hasn't heard from Chiefs
Posted by Mike Florio on October 20, 2009
Contrary to a report originating from WEEI in Boston that free-agent receiver Joey Galloway was en route to Kansas City for a workout, Steve Duemig of WDAE in Tampa reports that, as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Galloway hasn't heard a peep from the Chiefs.
Galloway became a free agent immediately upon his release from the Patriots.
The Baltimore Ravens reportedly were interested in trading for Galloway. If so, they presumably are interested in signing him as a free agent.
Cincinnati Bengals did more than sign Larry Johnson. They tried out WR Joey Galloway and two former Colts, DT Ed Johnson and S Mike Doss.

Bengals kick Galloway's tires
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 17, 2009
Joey Galloway's career may not be over quite yet.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the Bengals worked out the former Patriot/Buc/Cowboy/Seahawk on Tuesday, in addition to safety Mike Doss and defensive tackle Ed Johnson.
The Bengals have replaced Chris Henry from within to this point, but Galloway could be an option down the line if the team feels it needs another vertical threat.
Laveranues Coles has improved his play of late, but lacks the speed he had early in his career. Slot receiver Andre Caldwell is another traditional possession receiver. Galloway still appeared to have his speed with the Patriots, but struggled to adapt to their system.
GALLOWAY TRYOUT: Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski wants to see how his receivers do this week against the Raiders before moving forward with Joey Galloway.
The 15-year veteran, who was with New England before being released last month, was in for a tryout on Tuesday. Bratkowski goes a long way back with Galloway. He was the offensive coordinator in Seattle when they drafted Galloway with the eighth overall pick in 1995. The former Ohio State standout has also played for the Cowboys and Buccaneers.
?I knew he was available and his people had called me when Chris got hurt. It was a time to bring him in and see,? Bratkowski said. ?Obviously losing Chris we lost a playmaker and we?ll see how things go as we move forward. See how guys do this weekend.
?He looked good. We just have to go forward and see how things unfold. We wanted to look and see where things were at.?
Joey Galloway
As a Buckeye: A three-year letterman -winner (1991, '93 and '94) from the Ohio River town of Bellaire, Galloway was two-time All-Big Ten and finished his career with 108 receptions for 1,894 yards.
As a pro: Galloway was a consistent pro in a 15-year career split among Seattle (five years), Dallas (four), Tampa Bay (five) and New England (one - he was cut on Oct. 20). Assuming he's done, he'll end his career with 689 catches for 10,777 yards, one of 32 NFL players to top 10,000 yards.
The skinny: Galloway had six 1,000-yard seasons in his NFL career, - three in his mid-20s with Seattle and three in his mid-30s with Tampa Bay.

Steelers add Galloway
Associated Press
PITTSBURGH -- Wide receiver Joey Galloway has been added to the Pittsburgh Steelers' roster as the replacement for Limas Sweed.
Sweed was placed on injured reserve Monday with a non-football related illness. Coach Mike Tomlin would not reveal any details of Sweed's problem Tuesday.
Galloway was cut by New England earlier this season.
Steelers sign veteran wide receiver Galloway

The Steelers added one of the NFL's oldest players to replace a promising young wide receiver whose career has stalled.
Well-traveled Joey Galloway, who turned 38 last month, signed with the Steelers on Tuesday. He will attempt to learn the offense fast enough to play in this week's game against Baltimore at Heinz Field.
In another roster move, the Steelers signed long snapper Jared Retkofsky to replace Greg Warren, who went on injured reserve after suffering an ACL injury against Green Bay.
Galloway replaces Limas Sweed, a second-round draft pick in 2008 who recorded only one catch for 5 yards this season before being placed on the reserve/non-football illness list.
"He's one of those unique guys in that he's in great physical condition for a seasoned veteran," said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who was defensive backs coach in Tampa Bay when Galloway played for the Buccaneers in 2004 and '05. "Hopefully, he can provide a little energy and spirit for us, some veteran leadership in a position that's been depleted somewhat. That's significant for us.''
Long considered among the NFL's speediest receivers, Galloway has 689 career receptions for 10,777 yards (15.6 average) and 77 touchdowns in 15 seasons. He was the eighth player drafted in 1995 and spent five years with Seattle before playing four seasons with Dallas and five seasons with Tampa Bay.
He played only three games with New England this season, finishing with seven receptions for 67 yards before being released.
The Steelers, who considered signing Galloway as a free agent in the offseason, signed him after Sweed went on injured reserve and receivers Hines Ward and Mike Wallace suffered injuries in Sunday's 37-36 win against the Packers.
"He's a guy I have some familiarity with, having worked with him in the past," said Tomlin, adding that how quickly Galloway receives playing time "depends on the speed in which he learns as we proceed through the week. It wouldn't surprise me if he is capable of learning what to do."
Steelers' Galloway makes another new start

Joey Galloway spent a couple of months in New England and played in only three games before ultimately getting released during the season for the first time in his long career.
Even so, Galloway, 38, wasn't about to say that his decision of choosing the Patriots over the Steelers was the wrong choice when both teams were trying to lure him to sign a free agent contract during the summer.
"At the time, I felt that decision was the right one to make," Galloway said. "This opportunity is here (now), and I am excited."
The Steelers signed the 15-year veteran of five different NFL teams on Tuesday.
Galloway had succeeded at every stop he had made ? Seattle, Dallas, and Tampa Bay ? before flaming out in New England. He had seven catches for 76 yards before getting released after Week 6 by the Patriots.
Galloway is battling with rookie Tyler Grisham for the fourth wide receiver spot, but he will have a lot of work to do to convince the coaching staff that he knows the playbook well enough to be active Sunday.
"Every system has different terminology," Galloway said. "Each team you have to erase what you had and start over. I have started the process."
Galloway has always had plenty of time when he moved from one organization to another, but this is the first time he has joined a team in mid-season.
"It is a new challenge for me and something I am looking forward to," Galloway said.
Galloway hopes he can help Steelers

PITTSBURGH ? It?s easy to spot the new Steelers wide receiver. He?s the guy whose goatee is speckled with gray hair.
At 38, Joey Galloway is now the oldest player on the roster. He?s even older than coach Mike Tomlin, who is 37.
?He?s been in the league forever,? quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said.
No, Galloway hasn?t played in the NFL forever. But this is his 15th pro season.
The eighth overall pick of the 1995 draft, Galloway spent the bulk of his career with Seattle (1995-99), Dallas (2000-03) and Tampa Bay (2004-08). This summer, he worked out with the Steelers before signing with New England.
?I came very close to signing here,? Galloway said. ?It came down to this team and the other team. I went the other way. But I?m here now and I?m excited about being here.?
Galloway spent six weeks with the Patriots, but only played in three games before he was cut in October. Galloway caught seven passes for 67 yards and no touchdowns in his brief stay with the Pats.
?He?s had a great career. It?s just one of those things that didn?t work out,? Patriots coach Bill Belichick said at the time. ?I don?t think it?s anybody's fault or anything that you can just pinpoint."
Since his release from New England, Galloway has been home in Columbus, Ohio, working out in the event an NFL team needing help at wide receiver would call.

Galloway, a former Ohio State star, got that call Monday when the Steelers placed Limas Sweed on the season-ending reserve/non-football illness list.
Galloway will be in uniform Sunday when the Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens (he?ll wear jersey No. 84). But it?s too early to tell how much he will play.
?I have a lot to learn in a short period of time,? he said. ?Just because I?ve been in this league a long time doesn?t help you picking up a new system. I?ve had so many systems over the years that I?ll have to erase them out of my mind and start fresh.?
Galloway, who has 689 career catches, is looking forward to playing with the Steelers. He?s a native of Bellaire, Ohio, located 63 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.
?I grew up a Steelers fan,? he said. ?As a kid, I used to wear my black and gold Steelers jersey every Sunday. It was a Lynn Swann jersey. So I always dreamed about this opportunity.
?So today when I came in here and got my jersey and helmet, I had that little kid smile. I am excited about being here. I am excited about playing football again and I am extremely excited about being a Pittsburgh Steeler.?
Galloway could play against the Ravens Sunday

Joey Galloway has learned enough of the offense since signing with the Steelers that he could play Sunday against the visiting Ravens if needed.
But Galloway is likely to be deactivated for the 1 p.m. game unless the Steelers dress five wide receivers or if Hines Ward or Mike Wallace suffer a setback before Sunday.
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said Thursday that Tyler Grisham, an undrafted rookie, has a strong grip the Steelers' No. 4 wide receiver spot.
Grisham, who spent most of the season on the Steelers' practice squad, has played in the last two games but he is still looking to make the first catch of his career.
"He's done super," Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said of Grisham. "Have all the confidence in the world in him."
