WR Joey Galloway (Official Thread)

WR Joey Galloway showed up tonight, another good sign for Washington?s offense. Mike Shanahan said his plan all along was to get Galloway significant time only in the third preseason game. Galloway responded with three catches for 29 yards. He got separation on different types of routes?something we hadn?t seen frequently. Galloway also helped create a 29-yard completion from Rex Grossman to Santana Moss by running deep down the middle and clearing the safeties out. That?s the kind of help that Moss didn?t receive last season. If Galloway can do that all year, it?ll add another dimension to the passing game. Galloway?s game tonight will at least keep the doubters at bay for a bit.

How will the receivers? roles be defined?

Santana Moss is without question the starter at one wide receiver position, and Joey Galloway has spent all of camp and preseason as the starter opposite Moss. But Shanahan cautioned that Galloway isn?t necessarily that guy although he took all those reps in the preseason.

The soon-to-be 39-year-old Galloway certainly is the most proven with only Devin Thomas, Anthony Armstrong, Roydell Williams and Brandon Banks being the other members of the receiving corps. But does Shanahan have something up his sleeve? Will Galloway start? Will one of the other wideouts, or even a receiver that is not yet on the team? (The Chargers? disgruntled Vincent Jackson and newly released T.J. Houshmandzadeh have both been rumored to be possible receiver upgrades for Washington. And the Tampa Bay Bucs cut Michael Clayton, who has ties to Washington G.M. Bruce Allen.) We shall definitely see . . ..

No Houshmandzadeh means Joey Galloway should start for Redskins
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 6, 2010

It's hard for the Redskins to miss a player they never had, but losing out on T.J. Houshmandzadeh to the NFL team slightly to the north of Washington D.C. has to be frustrating.

Housh was the rare September pickup that could have improved the Redskins roster immediately. It's not like he would have got in the way of young players developing; the expected starter across from Santana Moss on Sunday is 38-year-old Joey Galloway.

It's hard to overstate how surprising this is. Galloway was an unmitigated bust in New England last season, and sat "on the street" for a few months last season after unsuccessful tryouts before finishing the year with the Steelers. He has 20 catches in the last two seasons combined.

When Galloway signed in Washington -- they also picked up similar aging veterans Mike Furrey and Bobby Wade -- he looked unlikely to make the team. Or to put it another way: It would be a very bad sign for the young Redskins receivers if he made the team.

Now Galloway is not only the team, he's expected to start. The Redskins have only two draft picks on their 53-man roster.

As a freshman at Ohio State, Rams middle linebacker James Laurainaitis remembers seeing Galloway working out early in the morning.

"You'd see him running sprints at 6:30 or 7 in the morning, and dusting all of our wideouts who are in college,'' Laurinaitis said. "He has still got it. He is extremely fast as you can see. You watch that game against the Texans, he's getting behind guys. He's 38, and he's out there doing things that some guys in this league can't do when they are in their 20s. I have a lot of respect for Joey Galloway, especially being a Buckeye.''

WR Joey Galloway: Galloway made no impact for the second time in three games. I don?t need to tell you this, but he?s the team?s No. 2 receiver. You can?t expect an offense to put up points without two good receivers, much less one who can?t produce even one catch. I suppose it?s not as much Galloway?s fault as it is the architects of this team (Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen). Anyhow, it?s difficult to know how often Galloway is getting open because the public doesn?t have access to the coaches? film, but it?s safe to say that if he was getting open, he would have at least one catch. Too bad we can?t give QB Donovan McNabb some truth serum on this one. Galloway was targeted on two deep balls, but he was covered both times. He was the primary receiver on a second-and-10 in the third quarter, but the cornerback defended the deep hitch well and Galloway wasn?t open.

Could Anthony Armstrong surpass Joey Galloway on Redskins' depth chart?

Today's print-edition story focused on the Redskins' lack of production from players not named Santana Moss or Chris Cooley. The two receivers behind Moss - Joey Galloway and Anthony Armstrong - are tied with seven receptions apiece entering Sunday's game against the Colts.

Since Armstrong's 84-yard performance last week against Green Bay, there's been a lot more chatter among fans about the team's No. 2 receiver spot. Galloway has started opposite Moss for all five games this season, though Armstrong has been building a compelling case for more playing time.

Asked whether Armstrong might be ready to start, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said, "He was in the starting lineup last week."

Technically, he's right. The Redskins opened in a three-receiver set last week against the Packers. It marked Armstrong's first career start. But on the depth chart - at least the one distributed to the media - Galloway is still listed ahead of Armstrong. Shanahan wouldn't say whether Galloway will remain ahead of Armstrong.

"He might not be the No. 2 receiver," Shanahan said of Galloway. "We definitely got a No. 1 receiver. Last week, I think there was equally two No. 2 receivers. We'll see who it is this week."

Coach Mike Shanahan was asked on Thursday whether Armstrong might move up the depth chart, to which he responded: "He's going to get a lot of playing time. We don't go through the depth chart for obvious reasons, but if he continues to improve like he's been improving, he'll get a lot of playing time."

Anthony Armstrong starts in place of Joey Galloway

First-year wide receiver Anthony Armstrong started in place of Joey Galloway Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts, a move that comes as no surprise considering Armstrong's recent performances.

Galloway has started opposite Moss in all five games this season but has just seven receptions for 121 yards. Armstrong, meanwhile, has made strides in the offense and last week turned in a career performance, catching three passes for 84 yards and a touchdown in the 16-13 win over the Green Bay Packers.

The performance prompted questions this week regarding Armstrong's role and whether he had done enough to surpass Galloway, 38, on the depth chart. During the week, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan indicated that the 27-year-old's performance would at least earn him more opportunities.

"He's going to get a lot of playing time," Shanahan said. "We don't go through the depth chart for obvious reasons, but if he continues to improve like he's been improving, he'll get a lot of playing time."

Despite Galloway's lack of production as the No. 3 receiver, Shanahan is pleased with longtime player's performance.

"I think Joey's done a good job. I think he really has," Shanahan said. "He's had a number of opportunities out there, at least where he's been open. There's been a combination of different things why he hasn't gotten the ball. If we didn't think Joey was a positive for our football team, he wouldn't be with us."

Was Joey Galloway demoted during Monday night?s game?

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in recent weeks have spoken highly of veteran wide receiver Joey Galloway despite his lack of statistical production.

Their praise, however, has rung hollow with many fans and media partly because they almost never publicly critique players and because Galloway?s scant production?only nine catches on 32 targets this season?belies their positive evaluations of his play.

Mike Shanahan?s actions speak the loudest in these cases, and we might have learned his true feelings during Monday night?s 59-28 loss to Philadelphia.

Roydell Williams replaced Galloway as the Redskins? third receiver after a pass intended for Galloway was intercepted with 5:08 remaining the second quarter. Williams played 24 snaps the rest of the game; Galloway played only one.

The interception occurred on third-and-12 from Washington?s 11-yard line. Galloway lined up wide left and ran what quarterback Donovan McNabb treated as a deep ?in? route. It appeared that Galloway did not push cornerback Dimitri Patterson up the field with his route, and his cut in was not sharp.

Patterson broke hard to the inside at the top of Galloway?s route, beating him to the ball for the catch. The play occurred right in front of the Redskins? sideline.

Galloway?s only offensive snap the rest of the game came on the play after McNabb missed Williams on a deep throw.

Another strike against Galloway on Monday was his drop of a potential third-down conversion. With the Redskins? offense struggling to keep the team in the game during a horrific first quarter, Galloway would have converted third-and-8 if he had caught the ball, but McNabb?s perfect throw went through his hands.

Galloway, who turns 39 on Saturday, already has been demoted once this season. Anthony Armstrong replaced him in the starting lineup in Week 6.

Mike Shanahan was not asked about Galloway after the game on Monday, and he was not made available to reporters yesterday. We should learn more about the decision today.

Short of coming out and saying it, Shanahan made it clear that Joey Galloway was indeed replaced by Roydell Williams as the third wide receiver on Monday after Galloway played a big role in McNabb?s second interception.

?It was a pick, but we liked the throw,? Shanahan said. ?He had the right timing, had the right footwork. I liked the throw.?

In other words, the receiver was the problem. Williams played 24 snaps to Galloway?s one the rest of the game. It?s the second time in four games that Galloway has been demoted. He began the season as a starter.

I?ll hazard a guess and say that Williams isn?t the missing piece to the Redskins? offensive puzzle. However, it at least proves that a lot of media/fans were on target with what they saw (or didn?t see) out of Galloway, no matter how much praise Mike and Kyle Shanahan have heaped on him.

So it was Joey Galloway's fault?
November, 18, 2010
By Matt Mosley

The Shanahan family -- Mike and Kyle -- teamed up this week to let reporters know that an interception thrown by Donovan McNabb in the first half of Monday's 59-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was actually Joey Galloway's fault. Mike was a bit more diplomatic than his son on the issue Monday, saying the coaching staff "liked the throw. He [McNabb] threw it. Had the right timing, had the right footwork. I liked the throw."

It's obvious that Shanahan was blaming Galloway, but he didn't use his name. Kyle then connected the dots Thursday and called out Galloway:

"I thought Joey could have done a better job on it," said Kyle Shanahan, who benched the veteran in the second half. "It was a tough look for Joey, but any time it's a pick, and the quarterback's throwing it on time, you could have done better."

Or maybe the Shanahans should have anticipated this might happen when they started a player who will turn 39 on Saturday. It's sort of silly to make someone a scapegoat following a 31-point loss. If Galloway had somehow run the route perfectly and prevented that interception, would the Skins have had a shot at staying within three touchdowns of the Eagles?

This reeks of a coaching staff that will spend the rest of the season trying to justify a long-term commitment to McNabb. It was obvious before the season that Galloway wasn't going to contribute to this team -- especially as a starter. There was a time when McNabb was talented enough to win while surrounded with inferior talented. We're about four years removed from that time. And placing blame on aging players such as Galloway isn't going to make this fan base feel any better.

Coaches not pleased with Joey Galloway's play Monday
By Jason Reid

No. 3 wide receiver Joey Galloway, who has contributed little this season, was benched in the second half of Monday night's 59-28 blowout loss to Philadelphia.

Roydell Williams replaced Galloway in multiple-receiver sets during the second half after Galloway did a poor job while running a route late in the second and quarterback Donovan McNabb's pass was intercepted.

On Monday, Coach Mike Shanahan declined to directly criticize Galloway for the play that resulted in a turnover, but he said the coaching staff "liked the throw. He [McNabb] threw it. Had the right timing, had the right footwork. I liked the throw."

Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan took things a step further after practice Thursday, expressing his dissatisfaction with Galloway's performance early in the game and especially on the timing pass that was intercepted.

"I thought Joey could have done a better job on it," said Kyle Shanahan, who also made the change at receiver because Galloway had a drop in the first half. "It was a tough look for Joey, but any time it's a pick, and the quarterback's throwing it on time, you could have done better."

In nine games, including four starts, Galloway has nine receptions for 141 yards (a 15.7-yard average) and no touchdowns. The 16-year veteran has a base salary of $855,000. He also received a $100,000 roster bonus.

Redskins release Joey Galloway

The National Football Post 1 hour, 31 minutes ago

Joey Galloway might have reached the end of the line.
The Washington Redskins have placed the veteran wide receiver on waivers this afternoon, ending his run with the club. They used the roster spot to promote rookie wide receiver Terrence Austin from the practice squad. Austin was a seventh-round draft pick from UCLA, and the team deemed the time had come to give him a shot.

Galloway made 12 receptions for 173 yards in 10 games. The Redskins were the fifth team in Galloway?s 16 seasons. He has 701 career receptions for 10,950 yards and 77 touchdowns. Galloway played in only three games for the New England Patriots last season. In his prime, he was considered one of the best vertical threats in the league.
