MIDDLETOWN ?

One after another they all made a lavish play for him. Each hoped Jalin Marshall would pick them and lift them to new heights.

In turn, the Middletown High star took his time, sized them up, narrowed his list and finally made his choice:

Ohio State?

Nooooo ? this is not a recounting of the recruiting process that the Buckeyes went through as they beat out the likes of Notre Dame, Alabama and Tennessee to land one of the best prep football players in the nation.

This was Marshall last Tuesday night on stage at Finkelman Auditorium on the Miami University-Middletown campus. The Academy of Dance Arts was putting on its Spring Dance Concert in front of a packed house and he was part of an advanced tap dance number called ?The Bachelor.?

A spinoff of the realty TV show, it featured 17 girls in short, sequined cocktail dresses trying to win his affections as they danced to Dutch jazz singer Caro Emerald?s rendition of ?That Man.?

When Marshall appeared on stage ? looking very much like James Bond in his stylish black tux and shiny black shoes ? there were squeals from other young women in the audience.

As the girls danced, Marshall ? hand in one pocket and looking confident and debonair ? strolled through their ranks, stopping occasionally to spin one prospect, dip another in his arms and effortlessly lift a couple of others toward the heavens.

??I?m just supposed to be a single guy who kinda flirts with the girls and in the end picks one,? he explained beforehand with a grin. ?That?s not bad at all, is it??

And after a couple of more lifts, a twirl of one girl around his waist and then rolling another across his back, he left the stage before re-appearing with some flowers that he handed to the dark-haired beauty he chose, who, in real life, was his girlfriend, Aidan Fultz.

As he wrapped his arm around his choice and the other girls pressed in around them, he flashed a little grin and there were more squeals from the audience.

It was just another night in the life of Jalin Marshall, who assistant track and football coach Matt Tyla called ?a real Renaissance Man.?

Marshall returns for GMC track double
By Mark Schmetzer

MASON ?

Two weeks off proved to just the tonic for Jalin Marshall.

The Middletown senior returned to competition at this week?s Greater Miami Conference track meet at Mason after sitting out while dealing with what coach Keith Vincent described as a hip flexor. The rest paid off as Marshall captured the conference long jump and high jump championships.

Marshall earned the second of his dual championships by jumping 6 feet, 4 inches to win the high jump on Friday.

?I took those two weeks off because I was hurting,? said Marshall, an Ohio State football recruit. ?I?m recovered now. I was able to be explosive. I attacked it. For being off two weeks, it was big to be able to come out here and perform.?

Marshall felt so good that he decided to take a shot at setting school and meet records by clearing 6-10.25, but he fell short. Vincent believes Marshall still has that height in him.

?He will get that,? Vincent said. ?He was distracted. He was needed on the (800-meter) relay team and was trying to (help) to his teammates.?

Marshall, the defending Division I state champion in the long jump, won the GMC competition with a mark of 23 feet, ? inch on the first day of the meet on Wednesday. Chance Sorrell earned the discus title with a throw of 153-4 the same day, helping the Middies take a nine-point lead over Mason in the team standings going into Friday?s finals.

Jalin Marshall - A Future Buckeye
Last Wednesday, I watched the Greater Miami Conference Track prelims at Mason High School. Also on Wednesday, as most conference meets go, some of the field event finals were held. This was my first chance to see O-State bound Jalin Marshall. After his long jump competition was over, I talked with him a few moments.
As with almost everyone who evaluates high school football players, there are just certain high school players whom you grow to respect. Jalin is one of those guys for me. I respect him and everything he stands for.
First watched him his sophomore year at Middletown. First game of the year and Jalin was working the spread offense. He ran, dodged, and found the endzone more than once. Although he did not have the Braxton Miller arm strength (and still does not), I thought he threw well enough to make defenders honest. But he had the "wiggle," and he could "Wow" you. He had the "it" factor.
With a new head coach and a new offensive scheme, Jalin came up under center his next two years. Watched him last year against St Xavier in his first game of the season. He almost single-handedly beat St X. Long runs. Explosiveness. Hips. Great determination. Middletown lost, but Jalin was still Jalin to me.
As with some high profile propects, too many people were tugging at him. Too much noise! Some close to home and some distant. As usual, most of the noise was useless and not needed. But I fear that he got caught up in the "bad side of football recruiting." Already committed to play at Ohio State University, maybe the "noise" worked on him. Just a guess, but he may have gotten caught up in the media hype.
When I first watched him last Wednesday, I was afraid my guess might have been for real. He had the "Tiger Woods" look. No smile. No communication with anyone. The bad dude swagger. I talked to him briefly before he competed. I sensed that I was another "noise." Bad for me. After competiton, I waved good-bye and wished him well, because he was using his cell. Most impressive- Everytime he talked with his coach, all business, and listened to his coach.
I forgot to mention that Jalin is the defending state champion in the long jump. His first jump last Wednesday was just over 23 feet. Big time jump. He won the event.
As I was watching the sprints, Jalin walked over and we talked for awhile. Some of the "stuff" is between Jalin and me. He talked about Ohio State wanting him to play the H-back position. Even though he was a second team all conference basketball player, he worked out 4 days a week and that is evident. Bigger and stronger. Guessing 5'11-205. Needs to get a little faster, but he should. But long jumping consistently in the 22's is pretty good for his size!!
When I asked him about not leaving early at semester, his answer was impressive. "Just had a lot of things that I want to do and to finish at Middletown. Enjoy and high and sports." Jalin is not one of those guys who should have left early. Now, hopefully, he can defend his state champion long jump title.
As we parted, he acted kind of surprised when I told him that he was my number one recruit in the Ohio Class of 2014. Also surprised him, when I said that he potentially was a better passer than people give him credit. If you check Urban Meyer's record he likes QB's to be 6'2 or 6'3 and be a better runner than passer. Jalin will not line at QB at O-State. As of now, he will line up in the slot and catch, block, and run. That he will do well. He still has the "it."
Once again, in this case, Ohio State recruits Ohio State. He told me that he never really considered any other schools.
By the end of the conversation Jalin was grinning and laughing. But I guess Tiger does that once in a while. Ohio State fans will like Jalin Marshall.

DAYTON ?

Middletown High School senior Jalin Marshall has learned a few things over the years about track.

The main one, place in the top four and move on.

As a junior at the Dayton regional, Marshall was the last qualifier to the state track meet in the long jump, but turned it on the final weekend to claim the state title.

?As long as I qualified, I?m fine,? Marshall said after finishing second in the long jump at the Division I regional Wednesday night at Dayton?s Welcome Stadium. ?Last year I barely made it out and ended up winning it.?

Marshall and Wayne?s Jordan Latimer went at it for bragging rights Wednesday. Marshall leaped to the lead with a jump of 23 feet, 1.5 inches in preliminaries. Latimer came back to defend his crown with a jump of 23 feet, 3.75 inches.

?I don?t like to lose,? Marshall said. ?But, it is always good to move on. I qualified and that is all that matters.?

Heading into the state meet, Marshall is looking more within than tinkering with anything over the next week.

?This deep in the season you can?t really tweak anything,? Marshall said. ?It is just going out, going hard and trying to win.?

Marshall, who also placed at the state meet in the high jump, will attempt to advance in both events on Friday.

?I like this because now I can come out and just have fun and compete,? Marshall said.

Marshall grabs second runner-up finish at track regionals
By John Cummings

DAYTON ?

With the weather playing a game of stop-and-go with the high jump participants in the Division I regional track meet at Welcome Stadium, Middletown senior Jalin Marshall knew he better strike when the weather was right.

A torrential downpour hit Welcome Stadium at 5:45, 45 minutes into the start of the field events and caused a 24-minute delay in the start of the running events.

Marshall, who normally enters the event at 6 feet, came in early and easily cleared 5-10 on his first attempt Friday night.

?I thought, you just got to go, you can?t wait,? Marshall said after qualifying for next weekend?s state meet. ?The conditions had a lot to do with it.?

Marshall later cleared 6-2, claiming second place on misses and missing first by two inches.

?I was expected to go (to state),? Marshall said. ?But, you never know what is going to happen. It is a great accomplishment to go back to state.?

The event started and stopped several times with more delays as puddles in the approach pit were squeegeed off.

?I was fortunate enough to get in high enough when the weather was clear,? Marshall said. ?You get warm and then you have a delay and you never feel like you are warmed up again.?

Several competitors slipped on their approach as they prepared to take off on their attempts because of the conditions.

?When you see people slip, you start to think about it,? Marshall said. ?You just got to go out and compete.?

Vada Edwards? career in the purple did not come to the end she had hoped for.

Edwards shook her head after finishing eighth in the 400 in 59.85.

?I don?t know what happened,? Edwards said. ?I felt good taking off, but felt dead at the end. I didn?t feel like I was warmed up well. I just had a bad day and it was the wrong time to be a bad day.?

Mason claimed the boys title with 103 points. Marshall scored 16 points with his two second-place finishes to give the Middies all their points in a 14th-place finish. Wayne was leading Mason in the girls team race. The girls pole vault was delayed until close to 8:30 p.m. while the long jump was moved to today at 1 p.m.

Marshall will compete at the state track meet next weekend at The Ohio State University. The Middie senior enters as the defending state champ in the long jump and will also make a return appearance in the high jump. Marshall was second in the long jump on the first night of competition Wednesday, with a leap of 23 feet, 1.5-inches.

Marshall seeks one last Middie triumph
By John Cummings

MIDDLETOWN ?

It is the perfect place for Middletown High School senior Jalin Marshall to make the transition from Middie to Buckeye.

Marshall, an Ohio State football recruit, concludes his outstanding prep career at the state track meet beginning Friday at Jesse Owens Field at OSU.

Sunday, he moves to campus.

?It?s very exciting,? Marshall said. ?I have thought about it a lot. I can?t wait. It has been a fun four years at Middletown.?

Marshall led the Middies to three appearances in the OHSAA state football playoffs, to the cusp of the final four in basketball as a junior and will conclude by going after his second state title in the Division I long jump.

?I have heard people compare me to a lot of Middie greats,? Marshall said. ?I hope I will be considered one as well.?

Marshall will defend his title in the long jump, look to place higher in the high jump and then head back to Middletown for one last night with family and friends before moving onto campus on Sunday. He is scheduled to begin summer school Monday.

?It?s crazy,? Marshall said. ?I think it (the end of his Middie career) will hit me as soon as I pack up on Sunday.?

Until then, Marshall is going to enjoy his last opportunities to pull on the purple and white and represent Middletown.

?It is incredible,? Marshall said. ?There is no other feeling like it. I have one more time being a Middie and representing my family and the community.?

After enjoying the first two rounds of the postseason, Marshall admits the stakes are higher in the state finals.

?I just wanted to qualify and compete and have fun one last time with my teammates,? Marshall said of the district and regional. ?This week is more serious. I want to go up and win, especially as the defending champ.?

While some would see being the defending champ as a bull?s-eye, Marshall is relaxed heading into his last high school competition.

?At the end of the day, all you can do is compete,? Marshall said. ?I had a cousin tell me one time that pressure busts pipes. I am relaxed and confident in my ability.?

Middletown senior Jalin Marshall will have to overcome a slight but nagging back injury and pull double-duty in his specialties today, the long jump and high jump.

The defending state champion, the Ohio State football recruit will begin long jumping at noon. He won the Division I event last season with a leap of 23-0.75. He?s already gone 24-4.25 this season, but that was nearly a month ago.

Three hours later he?ll also go for the high jump title. He was fourth at state as a junior and owns a season best 6-8, which would have won the event last season. However, he cleared that height early in the season and hasn?t come close to matching it.

Marshall finished finished second in the Division I high jump (6-8) and sixth in the long jump (22-9 ?) . Marshall planned to go home Saturday night, return to Columbus and move in on Sunday, then start classes at Ohio State.

Marshall, a quarterback in high school, is projected as a slot receiver for the Ohio State football team.

?It?s something most Ohioans want to do, play for Ohio State,? Marshall said. ?I?m looking forward to getting started.?

In track, Marshall was Division I state long jump champion as a junior but didn?t have his best day Saturday, finishing sixth. A few hours later, Marshall rebounded with a second-place finish in the high jump.

?I just didn?t prepare myself well enough for the long jump,? Marshall said. ?I thought I?d win and unfortunately I didn?t, but I didn?t let it hit me hard. I got myself back up for the high jump.?

Marshall closes Middies career with second, sixth at state
By Marc F. Pendleton
Staff Writer

COLUMBUS —

Jalin Marshall doesn’t take defeat well. That’s why going from a returning state long jump champion to sixth during Saturday’s state track and field meet didn’t sit well with the Middletown High School senior.

“It hit me hard,” he admitted.

Marshall made up for that by placing second in the high jump a couple of hours later with a season’s-best leap of six feet, eight inches. He hadn’t been that high since winning the 2012 regional. Until Saturday, his season best was 6-4.

Last season Marshall won the Division I long jump (23-0.75) and was fourth in the high jump (6-6).

He missed three times at 6-9 to place second to Findlay’s Tyler Brown (6-10.25) in Saturday’s high jump at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Marshall’s best in the long jump was 22-9.50. Wayne junior Jordan Latimer unloaded a 23-4.75 to rocket from ninth to first on his final leap. That knocked Marshall down from fifth.

“I just didn’t prepare myself well enough to come out here and win again,” Marshall said. “I took it lightly. I know going on in the future, I’ve got to prepare myself.”

He’ll move to Columbus today and begin his Ohio State football career and summer school on Monday.

A record-setting quarterback at Middletown, he’s been told that he’ll be a slot receiver at OSU, taking handoffs in addition to catching passes.

A celebrated Buckeyes recruit, he never considered graduating early to enroll at OSU in time for spring ball. Instead, he wanted to finish out his prep career with the Middies and friends.

“This is always a good thing to do,” he said. “Going forward with your career, staying back and having fun with your friends. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

He said that he often forced himself not to think about football for fear that it would interfere with his track season. Not anymore.

“It’s something that I’ve been looking forward to my whole life,” he said. “It’s something that I love to do and it’s a great honor for me.

“Everybody wants to play college football and most Ohioans want to play for the Buckeyes. For me to be able to play for the Buckeyes is a dream come true.”

Yay!!!!!!!!!!! My favorite number. 7th prime number. Sum of the first four prime numbers. It's always been my lucky number. (Yeah, I'm a nerd...) I always imagined that if I'd played football, it would've been what I wore. Too bad I'm just 5'8" and scrawny... Aniways, I'm glad Jalin's wearing it. I look forward to cheering for him in the near future!!!
