Evan Spencer earned his way onto the field the hard way, but now he's finally emerging as a receiving threat midway through Ohio State's season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Urban Meyer stood in front of the assembled media in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Sept. 16, only two days removed from Ohio State’s convincing 52-34 road blowout of California, and he hurled lofty compliments in wide receiver Evan Spencer’s direction.
The Buckeyes had just got done racking up 276 passing yards and four touchdowns through the air against the Golden Bears, and three different receivers caught touchdown passes from backup quarterback Kenny Guiton, who was starting in place of then-injured starter Braxton Miller.
“That’s one of the best efforts I’ve ever seen a wide receiver play,” said Meyer, describing Spencer’s performance.
But then came the caveat.
“… And I am not talking about the ball in his hands,” Meyer said. “We tried to get it to him a few times, but his blocking of the safeties was as good as I’ve ever seen.”
