WR Drew Carter (official thread)

OregonBuckeye;927188; said:
Every conference bashes the Big-10's speed, it's just SEC fans and the media are the most obnoxious about it.

There are quite a few big ten guys still in the leaugue and the speed jump from college to pro is more significant than high school to college.

Delhomme: Drew did his job

This won't make the paper, but I was listening to quarterback Jake Delhomme today when someone asked him his thoughts on wide receiver Drew Carter's two touchdown catches in Sunday's win at St. Louis.

Delhomme went beyond the usual "he did a great job" platitudes that players usually toss around, and was particularly excited over the second score, a 9-yarder with 7:15 remaining in the game.

"Two touchdown passes is very nice, but one thing I was most proud of, it wasn't the catch he made on the second one, it was the route he ran," Delhomme said. "He ran what he was supposed to do; he wasn't the primary read. He didn't rush it; he took his time, he did it exactly the way it was drawn and it worked out how you practice it; how you go over it.

"And that's huge for young guys to see and other guys to see; just do your job. And I'm as guilty of that as anybody else; you want to try to do too much. "He did his job." -- Stan Olson

Carter turns in big game with Smith out
STAN OLSON
[email protected]

With top receiver Steve Smith out with an injury Sunday, Drew Carter took his place and responded with a five-catch, 132-yard afternoon that included a touchdown.

While it wasn't Carter's career best -- he had eight receptions for 144 yards against the Giants last season -- his previous best this season had been three catches for 56 yards.

"The biggest thing we wanted to do this week was step up and show people that without Steve we can still play," Carter said. "People always think that Steve's just a one-man show, and you feel like you want to step up with him out.

Carter hopes to build off big game, solidify spot with Panthers

By Mike Cranston, AP Sports Writer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Drew Carter added to his short highlight reel last Sunday.
He needed to, because time is running out for the often invisible Carolina Panthers receiver.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Carter has to do something to give the Panthers a reason to keep the former fifth-round pick, who has speed and size, but few big plays and plenty of dropped passes in the NFL.

His performance at Green Bay was different: five catches for 132 yards and a touchdown.

"These next six games are going to be big, I guess, from a contract standpoint," Carter said. "But you can't think of it like that. You have to take each game and make plays when your chance is called."

Off and on: Panthers' Carter plagued by inconsistency
By John Delong
JOURNAL REPORTER

Drew Carter has had some productive games during his four seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

He had another last week in the Panthers? 31-17 loss at Green Bay, catching five passes for 132 yards and one touchdown.

But the concern about Carter has always been inconsistency. He?ll make a big play now and then, or have a big afternoon now and then, but the next game he might go silent again.

Panthers to place WR Colbert on IR
Keary Colbert - WR - CAR - Dec. 20 - 12:58 pm et
Panthers will place WR Keary Colbert (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Drew Carter will take over as a starter opposite Steve Smith in the final two games, with Dwayne Jarrett stepping into the third receiver role. Colbert, a pending free agent, seemingly lost confidence after a 47-catch rookie season in which he averaged 16 YPC. He's hovered around 10-11 yards per catch ever since and struggled with drops. Colbert will get signed to compete for a role somewhere in the offseason, but won't be viewed as a starter. Dec. 20 - 12:58 pm et

Carter points to character

Wide receiver Drew Carter had his best season yet in 2007. This despite the adversity the offense faced, especially at the quarterback position. Four different quarterbacks started for the Panthers, with all four getting wins but none getting more than two.

Carter played in all 16 games and made a career-high seven starts. He set career-best marks with 38 receptions, 517 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He also had a career-long 49-yard reception. And yet, on his way out of Bank of America Stadium Monday, his mood was a mixture of relief and disappointment.

?It was a bumpy road this season, up and down, but it showed the character of our team,? said Carter. ?I?m just going to take some time off, relax and try to come back this offseason with the main goal being the Super Bowl next year.?

Potential Bills Free Agent: WR Drew Carter
By Brian Galliford

Carter had a lot of opportunity to emerge as the #2 opposite Steve Smith, but never seemed to be very consistent. Do you think he has #2 capability?

Carter has been a bit of an enigma with Carolina. He started last season with a bang (4 catches and 2 TD's in game one) but then finished the season with only 4 TD's despite starting the second half of the season. He just disappeared at times. At 6'4" and tons of speed he should be a bigger threat than he is. Can he be a solid #2? It seems he should be but he hasn't yet.

What are the chances, in your mind, that the Panthers re-sign Carter to see if he can finally lock down a starting spot permanently?

I'm expecting the Panthers to re-sign him though they haven't given any indication yet. This is his fifth season so it's "put up or shut up" time. If the Panthers don't re-sign him I'm sure someone else will give him a chance. I would like to give him one more season. Maybe by then Dwayne Jarrett will be ready to go.

In general, what do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of Carter's game?

I don't really know what his problem is. He battles drops and sometimes just can't get open on those critical third downs. He improved as a blocker though so I don't think it's a strength issue. His strengths are his height and speed. His weaknesses are drops and failure to get open. He is an average blocker and has average hands.

I would love this pickup for the Bills! The Bills lack size at the wide receiver position which makes it tough for them to throw into the endzone once they reach the redzone. The addition of Carter would give them some much needed height. Plus, Carter and Evans would be an excellent deep threat combination, with the ultra elusive Roscoe Parrish in the slot. Then throw in Josh Reed as the #4 receiver who runs good routes and who has a reliable set of hands. I would still like to see the Bills add another tall receiver who's a little bit thicker and more physical than Drew.

As a Charlotte born guy, naturally, I'm a Panthers fan. Unfortunently inconsistant would summarize Drews career. He's been solid.. Sometimes. Other times, he drops the easy ones.

I don't see him being resigned, but I certainly wouldn't mind giving him one more year, as Jarrett has done rat shit, and we have nobody else.

Moose returns: The Panthers should complete a deal Wednesday to bring back wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who was cut by the Bears. Muhammad's mission will be to be a possession receiver and help the development of second-year wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett. The hope is Muhammad does such a good job with Jarrett that the second-year receiver starts and Muhammad is third. But if Jarrett isn't ready, the Panthers believe Muhammad's got enough left in him to start. The return of Muhammad, though, probably means that Drew Carter and Keary Colbert are probably going to leave via free agency.
