WR Drew Carter (official thread)

Colum: WR Carter has fighting chance to win starting spot
By Steve Reed
June 30, 2007 - 8:05PM

So the general feeling is this: If Carter can improve his route running, add a few pounds and become a more consistent cog in the Panthers offense, then the sky?s the limit.
And if there?s ever a time for Carter to breakout, this is the year.
He?s entering his contract year with the Panthers, meaning he?ll become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Friendly competition

Drew Carter and Keary Colbert split time as the No. 2 receiver throughout training camp, but Carter said the competition hasn't had a negative impact on their friendship.

"It's up for grabs, but everybody's going to contribute," Carter said. "You can make a big ordeal about the starting job, but third receivers make big plays. Ricky Proehl made lots of big plays when he was the third receiver. But you always want to shoot for the starting job.

"We both are working hard. We're good friends. There's no animosity because we just want to go out and win."

Rookie Dwayne Jarrett, a second-round pick, also is in the mix, but he missed time with an injury and hadn't had many first-team reps before the team broke camp Monday.

"It's not going to be something where you're given the job like at USC or Ohio State or wherever you're at," Carter said. "You come in on scholarship, so you know you're going to be around. But guys fight for jobs here. You've got to put forth effort every day and people are coming after you."

Drew Carter interviewing Keary Colbert

DC: In a couple seasons from now, Ohio State will play USC. What type of gameplan do you think USC is going to throw at the dominant defense of Ohio State?
KC: Dominant defense? That?s probably because they don?t see any speed in the Big 10, as we?re noticing now watching this Michigan/Oregon game. We?ll probably spread them out and let our playmakers use their natural God given abilities. They?ll run by them and do a lot of things with their quickness. Like I said, they?re not used to that in the Big 10. They?re used to that slow, run-the-ball (stuff). They?re not used to our game.
DC: Since this is Hot Potato, I?m going to hand it right back to myself. This is my rebuttal. We will overpower the offense of USC. We understand that they?re fast, but we?re a lot stronger AND smarter at THE Ohio State University.
