WR Drew Carter (official thread)

Raides notes: Carter trying to unseat Curry at wide receiver

NAPA ? NAPA ? One of the more interesting intra-team battles going on right now is at wide receiver, where newcomer Drew Carter is trying to unseat previous starter Ronald Curry.

Coach Lane Kiffin said Curry would start against the Titans on Friday because he didn?t get to play in the first exhibition game against the 49ers. ?We?re going to do the same with them as far as giving them the same opportunities, and there could be a decision on that within the next week hopefully,? Kiffin said. ?If one guy shows us he?s the starter, we?ll make a decision on that so we can go into Week 3 not having any starter question marks.? Curry said he felt fine before the Niners game. But having tweaked his hamstring previous to the joint practice against that same foe, he was shut down by his coaches.

Now the seventh-year pro isn?t sure where he stands. He is supposedly in competition with Carter for the starting spot, but said that Javon Walker and Carter have gotten nearly all of the first-team repetitions.

?I think they know what they have in me,? the straight-talking Curry said. ?You know, you see something new and you like it. I think that?s the case. I?ve been out here for a while, they?ve seen a lot of me. Drew, I guess, is a breath of fresh air. And you go out and get a big acquisition like Javon, I guess you see something new and you like it.? The Raiders gave Walker $16 million in guarantees when they signed him in March.

In 2004, Curry excelled as the Raiders? third receiver, becoming a reliable third-down option from the slot position under then-coach Norv Turner. He isn?t thrilled with that prospect now, though, pointing out that Oakland has become a running team that plays a lot of base two-receiver sets and even a fair amount of ?Hippo? sets, with two tight ends and one wide receiver.

?I?m used to battling,? Curry said. ?Last year was the only year really that I was given an opportunity to start. Every year other than that I always had to prove myself, and I feel like I?m in the same spot again.?

The players competing for the starting vacancies certainly had ample time Friday to make a lasting impression.

Wide receiver Ronald Curry outplayed Drew Carter and moved closer to earning the starting spot opposite Javon Walker. Curry caught three passes for 19 yards. On one reception, he juked a defender and turned a short play into a first down.

Carter's best, and only, shot at swaying Kiffin evaporated on a pass in the end zone that missed the mark. He finished without any receptions.

Unbelievable

The knee injuries that Drew has overcome was pretty amazing and such a testament to his character and hard work...everytime he came back better than before.

I think this is his 4th season ending knee injury.

You don't want to see this happen to anybody, but seeing this happen to him once again is painful.

hate to see people with his talent go down, especially when he was starting to shine. I used Drew sparingly on my Fantasy team last year. He picked me up points in clutch weeks.

Sad to see him go down.

wideout Drew Carter also injured his left knee. On just his second grab of the ?08 preseason, a quick 7-yarder, Carter saw his entire regular season slip from his grasp. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder tore his anterior cruciate ligament and, like O?Neal, is guaranteed to miss the entire upcoming season.

Carter is no stranger to devastating injuries. After battling knee and ankle injuries his entire college career at Ohio State, the 26-year-old (whose birthday is in 11 days) sat out his entire rookie season with another ACL tear and several more games over the next two years with ankle problems.

?He?s had so many things like this happen to him,? Kiffin said of Carter. ?He?s had a lot of tough breaks injury-wise. He was on a one-year contract, so this was very tough for him.?

Oakland Raiders "Offense takes a deceivingly major hit with Drew Carter injury" - Realfootball365.com

Carter was injured during a 7-yard reception when he was tackled by Cardinals linebacker Gerald Hayes. Carter immediately rolled over, grabbed his left knee and awaited help from two team trainers.

Carter already has endured three ACL injuries in his five-year career. He was competing against Ronald Curry for a starting spot opposite Javon Walker.

Carter and O'Neal both were dejected, Kiffin said.

"Obviously, both were really down, especially Drew," the coach said. "He's had so many things like this happen to him. He's had a lot of tough breaks injury-wise. He was on a one-year contract, so this was very tough for him."

*WR Drew Carter reports rehab on his left knee is going well. He admitted he questioned whether he really wanted to go through rehab after a fourth ACL injury (he's torn it in each knee twice).
He thought it might be time to move on to the next phase of his life without football.
"I almost went into a little depression stage but, luckily, I had my family there," Carter said. "They just kept me up. But it was hard. When I did it, it felt like it was surreal. I was like, 'There's no way I just did this again.'"
Carter signed a one-year deal in the offseason and said he'd be interested in returning to the Raiders, especially if receivers coach James Lofton is still on the staff.

There is also talk that the Raiders are in negotiations with center Jake Grove as well as wide receivers Ashley Lelie and Drew Carter. Grove probably gauged his market and realized that he won't be due a big payday. He would be valuable for depth as he knows the system, but the Raiders should look for an upgrade in Alex Mack from Cal in the draft if he is there in round two. Ashley Lelie would likely be camp competition, and would see little guaranteed money. Drew Carter has expressed a desire to sign with the Raiders to play, since he was on injured reserve all of last season. None of the three should command much over the minimum for their positions.

Ohio State?s Drew Carter Now Working With Jewelry

headshot_lrg-150x150.jpg

Ohio State?s Drew Carter had just 41 career receptions for 632 yards and a touchdown during his career because of injuries, but was a member of the Buckeyes? 2002 national championship team. Right when it appeared Carter would have a break-out season with the Buckeyes as a fifth-year senior in 2003, he tore his ACL and never played for the Buckeyes again. After bouncing around the NFL, today Carter works with Metal Noir, a high-end jewelry house that specializes in black diamond jewelry. He currently resides in Los Angeles.
