Houston used the 68th overall pick on DeVier Posey, who ran a 4.5 40-yard dash at the combine.

DeVIER POSEY
Position: Wide receiver College: Ohio State
Team: Houston Texans 2012 NFL draft: Third round (No. 68 overall)

Posey: I don?t think I?ve had it yet. I?m looking forward to it and trying to learn from it.

What are you going to miss the most about college?

My homeboys and just being a kid. Being able to mess up and get back from it. Now you?re serious, you?re a professional and you have to handle your business.

If you could get one rookie card from one player here, who would it be?

I would probably have to get Trent Richardson.

What is the best part of the Rookie Premiere experience?

Really just getting to hang out with all the dudes. You?re not going to be around a setting like this with all these guys again, and now they?re your competitors. I?m the only Texan here, so they?re going to be on the opposite sidelines now.

What rookie out here has the most swagger?

I would like to think myself, of course. Definitely. I wake up in the morning, and that?s just what I do.

Who are the nastiest fans you faced in college?

I would have to give that to Purdue. They?re not nice. They?re not nice at all.

If there were two Texans who could afford to miss most of offseason team activities while they rehab from injuries, they?re QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson. That?s the good news. But one adverse effect to keep in mind with Schaub being on the sideline is the impact it might have on an extremely young receiving corps. While players are getting extra reps because of Johnson?s absence, they have missed out on building a rapport with Schaub. One source indicated after Houston?s OTAs wrapped up that neither of the wide receivers the team selected in the draft, third-rounder DeVier Posey or fourth-rounder Keshawn Martin, had yet to jump out.

Ranking the Texans Top 40: No. 25-40

33. DeVier Posey, WR - Posey missed most of last season and is playing a position that can be tricky for rookies to pick up. I wouldn?t expect much from Posey this year and I think he?ll find himself behind Lestar Jean in terms of pecking order at the outside WR position. Despite his size and speed, Posey just isn?t ready to make a dent in 2012.

On DeVier Posey: ?Posey has outside speed and can take the top off the defense, but the best he will be is a No. 3 wide receiver in this offense. If he progresses quickly, Kevin Walter can work out of the slot and concentrate on short/intermediate routes while Posey hopefully takes some multiple coverages away from their star, Andre Johnson.?

Texans sign third-round pick DeVier Posey
Posted by Josh Alper on July 23, 2012

It won?t be long before there are no unsigned draft picks in sight.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans moved us a little bit closer to that magic moment by signing wide receiver DeVier Posey to a four-year contract. That leaves Posey?s fellow third-round pick, guard Brandon Brooks, as the only member of the Texans draft class without a contract.

Posey was suspended for all but three games of his senior year at Ohio State, a layoff that might have affected him during spring practices with the Texans. Gary Kubiak singled out Posey for a lot of hollering during the team?s workouts and said that he needs to be in better condition to earn time with the offense.

The good news is that there?s time to be earned. The Texans don?t have a third receiver right now, so Posey will have a chance to play his way into the picture if he can show the team more than Lestar Jean and fourth-round pick Keshawn Martin. If none of the rookies step up, the Texans will likely have to look outside the organization for someone to fill that role this season.

WR -- DeVier Posey vs. Lestar Jean vs. Keshawn Martin. For the Texans at wide receiver, it is Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter then a lot of inexperience. Posey is a third-round pick who missed a lot of his senior season at Ohio State due to off-field problems. Lestar Jean was an undrafted free agent last year out of Florida Atlantic. He was injured all last year, but he has impressed in OTAs. Jean might be the favorite to take the third wide receiver spot. Martin is a fourth-round pick out of Michigan State. At 5-11, 194 pounds, Martin could find a place in the slot. The Texans are also bringing in Roy Williams and Bryant Johnson for a tryout on Thursday. Some veteran help could make Houston feel a little better about the situation. Posey, Jean, and Martin have combined for 0 receptions in the NFL.

Opportunity comes knocking for Texans? WRs after injury to Andre Johnson

About the last thing the Texans want to find out this season is how much they will miss receiver Andre Johnson if they don?t have him.

Yet, Sunday morning, not quite three practices in, Johnson was the source of the first official training-camp scare when he suffered yet another setback, this time pulling his right groin. It was the fourth injury he has suffered since the fourth game last fall and his fifth going back to the 2010 season.

Suddenly, Lestar Jean, DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin found themselves a heartbeat away from Matt Schaub?s huddle kicking off a season for which the locker-room mantra seems to be ?Super Bowl or bust.?

That?s pressure. Each, however, seemed nonplussed by the circumstances.

When Posey saw Johnson being tended to as he lay on the ground, the rookie third-round draft choice felt badly for a man who has become something of a mentor. But he insisted he couldn?t let it change how he was going about preparing himself.

?I?m just trying to take small steps, do a little work after practice and get better every day,? Posey said. ?As long as I keep working on those things and just be the best player that I can be ? when my time has come, hopefully I?m ready.?

Rookie WR Posey has best practice

Receiver DeVier Posey, a third-round pick, had his best practice. He made terrific catches down the field and in the end zone.

?He made a couple of nice plays, and he continues to improve,? coach Gary Kubiak said. ?He has a lot of talent. You could tell in OTAs that he had missed a lot of football, but I see him catching up. I like the way he works.?

Posey served two five-game suspensions at Ohio State last season.

?He?s in very good shape and can go all day, so that?s what you?ve got to do in this league to play receiver,? Kubiak said. ?He?s had a good week so far.?

POSEY

Schaub: ?He?s a big-body guy. He fits the mold for the outside type receiver in our scheme. He?s coming along with all of his adjustments and assignments. But he?s very bright. He?s one f the hardest working young players that we have. He?s out there early catching balls, he stays late catching balls. You like that about him, because he has that want-to, to achieve the most he can out of himself and he knows he can help us. We know he can help us. That?s why we play preseason and training camp, because we need to get him there.?

Joseph: ?Posey?s got all the physical gifts you want from a guy. He hasn?t played football in a whole year, almost [because of a suspension at Ohio State[. He?s coming along. He?s playing so much faster than he did in the spring.?

My thoughts: It sounds like he?s making progress. I think when they took him the Texans knew he might not explode from the start because of the minimal playing time in his final year in college.

Patience with Posey
Rookie wide receiver DeVier Posey, a third-round pick from Ohio State, still does not have a catch in the preseason. He has been targeted just one time in both of the Texans? first two preseason games, both times in the fourth quarter.

Because rookie fourth-round pick Keshawn Martin and second-year pro Lestar Jean have played so well, Posey has had fewer opportunities.

?The way it kind of played out last night, the guys that are working with the third group did not get many reps last night,? Kubiak said. ?It?s just the way the game came out. I wish I would have got DeVier a little bit more but those other two guys (Martin and Jean) are playing extremely well. They?re picking things up extremely well. I wouldn?t say that DeVier is not doing the same things; I would not say that. I just think that it has taken him a little bit more time to get going with the offense, so to speak. I mentioned many times throughout the course of the month, he did miss a year of football in a lot of ways last year, but his ability shows up? We?re going to play our starters a bunch this week, but before this preseason is over, he?ll get plenty of time.?

Texans rookie Posey trying to show he wasn't a big reach in draft
By Tania Ganguli

HOUSTON ? When the Houston Texans drafted DeVier Posey, they knew his development would likely be slower than other receivers.

That didn't stop the Texans from taking him out of Ohio State in the third round of April's draft.

?We believe in his talent,? Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. ?That's why we drafted him, and I know he's going to be able to help this team. We've just got to get him up with everyone else.?

So far this preseason, Posey hasn't had as many opportunities as the Texans' other young receivers, in part because he is a little bit rustier than even other rookies. He missed 10 games last year due to NCAA suspensions, and while Posey won't use that as an excuse, the team is being patient with his development.

?I'm here for a reason,? Posey said. ?Everything happens for a reason. I really believe in that. I just try to take every day as a new experience no matter what happens. If I have a good day or bad day, I just gotta understand that. I'm a rookie, I'm not a Pro Bowler yet. So to get to Andre Johnson status, you've got to just work every day.?
