WR DeVier Posey (2017 Grey Cup Champion and MVP)

WR DeVier Posey (third to sixth): Decent speed but didn?t always play that fast, now in the middle of the pack as about the 20th-best receiver, but not a bad bet to improve as a pro.

Which Ohio State alum has more NFL duty ahead of him? Brian Robiskie? Or DeVier Posey?
This much is a safe bet: Posey will be a lot cheaper than Robiskie was on draft day.
Once an interesting NFL prospect, Posey disappeared into the whirlpool of trouble in Columbus. Now he projects as a Round 6 pick by NFL Draft Scout. Pro Football Weekly likes him a bit more, projecting fourth-round value.
Using PFW?s Nolan Nawrocki?s take on Posey, we imagined two guys watching a flat screen at the corner place and having this conversation as Posey highlights were shown.
Joe: ?Hmmm ... smooth acceleration and hip swivel. Good balance and body control.?
Chuck: ?Yeah, but ... inefficient line release. Does not play to times speed or consistently separate vertically.?
Joe: ?Glass half full now, Chuckster. Nice route-running posture ... can stem, nod and get a cornerback?s hips turned.?
Chuck: ?Won?t be facing Indiana?s corners, Joe-boo. ... Runs imprecise patterns and tends to float. Shrinks in traffic.?
? ? ?
Posey goes 6-1 5/8, 211. In 2010. His numbers in 2009 (60 catches, 828 yards) and 2010 (53, 848) are enough to get your attention.

Posey served a 10-game NCAA suspension at the start of last season. Therefore, he didn?t have the senior year he had hoped, had to answer a lot of questions and tried to put his best foot forward in the past three months.

?I did my best, and now it?s out of my control,? said Posey, who has been projected to go anywhere from the third round to the sixth. ?I?m trying my best to keep reminding myself of that.?

Yet he?s just a glorified spectator at this point, at least until his phone rings.

?I?m just kind of anxious, I want to know what?s going to happen,? Posey said. ?I?m just looking forward to finding out, then getting in there with my new team and start working.?

Texans pick DeVier Posey No. 68 - NFL Network

Posey has the same intentions. But considering he had to sit out the first 10 games of his senior season because of NCAA suspensions, he went into the draft just hoping to get a call sometime during the seven rounds.

?I wasn?t expecting the Texans, I wasn?t expecting the third round,? Posey said. ?This is a true blessing.?

He went on thank more than 20 people, including former Ohio State coaches Jim Tressel, Darrell Hazell, Stan Drayton and Luke Fickell, and teammates who helped him and encouraged him along the way.

?I?m just happy God had a plan for me,? Posey said.

Meet the newest Texans

Hanging out on Miami?s South Beach with an Ohio State teammate last year, DeVier Posey caught a glimpse of a famous NFL receiver also chilling with friends. But not for a moment did Posey dare consider intruding on Andre Johnson?s space.

As a new Texans teammate, however, the rookie Posey plans to pester Johnson on a daily basis.

?I can?t wait to just quiz Andre Johnson and ask him about everything he does,? he said. ?I?m excited to get down to Houston and get to work ? and follow in his footsteps.?

The Pro Bowler?s new best friend fell into the Texans? laps with the 68th pick in the NFL draft because of personal lapses that caused him to endure two five-game suspensions his senior season. Before the NCAA busted him and four other Buckeyes for selling memorabilia and receiving improper benefits ? a scandal that ultimately cost coach Jim Tressell his job ? Posey could have been fast-tracking to the first round after catching 113 passes as a sophomore and junior while scoring 16 touchdowns.

?When you look at (his) talent, he compares very well with some of the guys (who went ahead of him),? Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said. ?He runs great routes and has good ball skills. He works hard. He fits with the rest of our guys.?

Historically, the Texans have been reluctant to take on players who have ?character issues.? They made an exception for Posey because they concluded he?s a good person who made a couple of bad decisions, and he showed proper contrition for same. That?s exactly how he came across in a short conference call with the Houston media, ending most of his answers by adding the word, ?Sir.?

Coming clean

After all, he broke rules, not laws.

?The first suspension happened when I sold my (Big Ten co-championship) ring my freshman year and missed five games,? Posey said. ?The second one happened (because) I had a job and they told me I was overpaid for it. I made mistakes. It was something I learned my lessons from and I?m moving forward. It?s made me a better man and a better person.?

Posey addition could mean end of Jones' tenure in Houston
By Arthur Arkush

Texans fans badly wanted a receiver in the draft ? almost as much as their desire to see Jacoby Jones run out of town.

It appears both of their wishes will be granted.

After sending its second-rounder to the Buccaneers in exchange for the opportunity to double dip in Round Three (plus add a sixth-round pick), Houston selected former Ohio State WR Devier Posey 68th overall. Shortly after the selection, a report surfaced that the Texans are shopping Jones, the goat of the team?s divisional-round playoff loss against the Ravens for a boneheaded muffed punt that turned into a gift-wrapped Baltimore TD.

I?ll be surprised if the Texans get anything of value for Jones, whose God-given abilities were overshadowed by his penchant for drops, inconsistency and sometimes lackadaisical effort in practice during his stint in Houston. But if the report is accurate, I salute Gary Kubiak and Co. for finally admitting what many of us have been screaming from the mountain top for quite some time: Jones is never going to figure it out ? at least not with the Texans.

But on to more pressing matters.

Posey, a 6-1?, 210-pound ?X? receiver with 4.4 speed, fits the mold for a Texans wideout. He is a big, playmaking receiver with polished route-running skills and some blocking ability. However, Posey was suspended 10 games last season for selling sports memorabilia and receiving improper benefits. Still, if Jones is indeed out on the outs, Posey will have a chance to contribute as a rookie, and he will have the good fortune of learning from one of the best in the game, Andre Johnson.
