WR DeVier Posey (2017 Grey Cup Champion and MVP)

Jim Tressel: DeVier Posey?s Character Should Not Be Questioned
By TERRANCE HARRIS, SportsRadio 610
May 2, 2012

HOUSTON (CBS Houston) ? Almost as soon as the Texans made Ohio State receiver DeVier Posey the fifth pick of the third round during last Friday night?s NFL Draft the questions came.

What was the organization thinking taking a misfit who missed nearly his entire senior season due to misconduct?

After years of being unwilling to take a chance in the draft on any players with questionable backgrounds, general manager Rick Smith and head coach Gary Kubiak decided to give an opportunity to a young man with some baggage. They used a high draft pick, which they had gained by trading out of the second round, to take on player who had missed a total of 10 straight games his senior season as a result of two separate NCAA findings against him.

First, Posey was part of the now infamous memorabilia for tattoos and cash scandal in 2010 and then it was found last summer that he had been overpaid $728 for a summer job. The NCAA suspended Posey for five games each for the two violations, leaving him just three games to cap what had been shaping up to a brilliant four-year career as Buckeye.

Prayers answered for Posey
A long road to NFL for LaSalle, OSU standout
May. 3, 2012

DeVier Posey was sitting on his mother?s couch surrounded by friends, family and former teammates at their Mount Airy home when the call came last Friday night from the Houston Texans informing Posey that they had selected him in the third round of the NFL draft.

At that moment, his long nightmare was truly over.

?It was one of the best moments of my life,? Posey said. ?Getting that call and not expecting it and praying and praying and praying and working my tail off to be the best player I can be. I knew I had enough talent, but I missed 10 games. Coaches and scouts weren?t able to see me play. I was virtually invisible this year.?

DeVier Posey ready to catch what NFL throws his way

Former OSU wide receiver DeVier Posey addresses the media after a Nov. 26 football game against Michigan. OSU lost, 40-34.

Dante Lavelli, Paul Warfield, Cris Carter and Santonio Holmes are among many wide receivers whose Ohio State careers led to success in the NFL. On April 27, DeVier Posey became the most recent OSU wide receiver to join that fraternity. He was drafted by the Houston Texans with the 68th overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft?s third round.

Posey was the 10th receiver drafted. He was the second of four Buckeyes drafted, following offensive tackle Mike Adams, who was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 56th overall selection.

Posey told The Lantern he was excited to be drafted in the third round, but was prepared to be drafted at any time.

?I was ready for anything,? Posey said. ?I knew that anything could happen. I just felt like I had to mentally prepare myself to go late and mentally prepare myself to go early.?

In his four-year career as a Buckeye, Posey caught 136 passes for 1,955 yards and 18 touchdowns. Those numbers rank sixth, eighth and seventh respectively among OSU receivers all-time.

In his senior season, however, Posey only had 12 receptions for 162 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Posey was only allowed to play in three games last season, as a result of two separate five-game suspensions. Posey was one of five OSU players suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for trading Buckeyes football memorabilia in exchange for improper benefits in the form of tattoos. He also received a separate five-game suspension for receiving money for work he did not complete during a 2011 summer job.

Posey said NFL teams asked him many questions about his suspension, and he answered their questions honestly.

?They asked me a lot,? Posey said. ?They just really wanted to know what happened, but for the most part, they just wanted to figure out what kind of guy I was, and I feel like I was honest and forthright with everything, I gave them everything I knew.?

Last year, the Houston media was destroying Ohio State and Tressel. Now Posey made a youthful mistake and Tressel was just being loyal and covering for his players. Funny how this stuff works...

Time heals all... What DP and Tressel did was news. Now that the news is old news, their transgressions have faded to nothing more than jaywalking violations. The media makes these stories far worse than they appear and they just happen to sell a few more papers and magazines in doing so. Funny how that works...

the Texans drafted 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver DeVier Posey out of Ohio State. Known for his quickness and exemplary route-running ability, the Texans envision Posey to be a go-to slot receiver.

Through the first two weeks of OTAs, Posey has impressed coaches by getting separation from cornerbacks covering him.

?There are a ton of opportunities for us right now,? Posey said. ?Everyone in the group has taken the opportunity to get better.?

Posey has competed heavily with fourth-round pick Keshawn Martin, a 5-11, 189-pound receiver from Michigan State.

Walter?s evaluation of the two draft picks has produced nothing but rave reviews.

?DeVier, he?s a great guy,? Walter said. ?He?s got size, he can run, get in and out of his breaks. The same with Keshawn ? he can run fast, make plays, and those two guys are going to help us out big time.?

(on WR DeVier Posey) ?He continues to do good things. I want his conditioning level, and I?m not saying it?s bad but all these young guys need to get to where you can go all day in this Texas heat. They think they?re okay until they get down here. When that gets better, his talents will continue to take over. He made some plays and he?s a hard worker. He?s one of the last guys leaving here every day so that?s important.?

Posey playing catch-up at Texans' camp

DeVier Posey has a lot of catching up to do. Not only must Posey learn the Texans offense, the third-round pick from Ohio State also needs to get back to playing in actual games.

Posey, 6-foot-1 and 211 pounds, played in just three games during his senior season due to two separate five-game suspensions. Posey was punished for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring and for getting overpaid for a summertime job. Thus, Posey has not played a full season of football since 2010, when he caught 53 passes for 848 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games.

Had it not been for involvement in the Ohio State scandal, perhaps Posey would have been a higher draft choice with less baggage. The suspensions may have overshadowed his talents.

"Maybe, in way," said Posey while participating in the Texans' OTA's. "You can't really speak on hypothetical situations. That's one thing my mother always taught me. ... God has a plan for you. No matter what it is, you have to learn how to adjust and handle adversity."

Posey said he's been asked to address the Ohio State suspensions during virtually every media interview since he became a pro.

"It's probably the hardest thing I've had to go through in my life," Posey said. "It was a learning experience. I feel like I grew so much as far as mentally, the cerebral part of the game. Being at Ohio State and being able to sit back and sit like a coach, really for 10 weeks, I learned a lot."

Posey has plenty of catching up to do

With chronic needs at receiver, the Texans attempted to address the situation in part by investing a third-round pick in former Ohio State wideout DeVier Posey. But Posey played in only three games last year, thanks to a pair of five-game suspensions.

So now Posey has to get himself up to speed, after basically a year off.

?When his conditioning level gets better, his talents will take over,? coach Gary Kubiak recently said, via David Dalati of FOXSportsHouston.com. ?He?s a hard worker. He?s one of the last guys leaving here every day and that?s important.?

It could take Posey a while to get to where he needs to be. ?They say it?s not hot yet,? Posey said. ?But it doesn?t feel like this in Ohio.?

On WR DeVier Posey (third round, Ohio State): ?I?m probably hollering at him as much as any player on the field right now, but I?m trying to bring him along. I know how much he has to help this football team this year. He missed a lot of football last year, and that puts him behind. But talent-wise, he can help us. He?s got to go in there and he?s got to be a part of Kevin Walter, Andre Johnson and Lestar Jean and help us be a great football team, and I?ve got to get him to that point.?
