WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

There were times last year when he was SO wide open that you had to wonder if he was wearing camo or something. I can think of several times (against PSU, scUM, etc.) where I was left scratching my head of why he was so wide open. I've heard from other guys that he runs great routes and thought I read a quote somewhere from Malcolm saying that he thought Dane was the hardest guy to guard because his routes are so clean. Every program needs guys like that. He is shifty, runs good routes, and still alive, albeit barely.

Clean route runners like Dane keep zone defenses honest. Hopefully Lamaar can develop into a deep threat and Posey can be our all around guy to give us an arsenal of receivers comparable to what we had in 2005,2006.

he's also faster than i think people give him credit for.

Cup Runneth Over: Ohio State Players To Watch in 2009 | Bleacher Report

Wide Receiver

In recent years, WR "U", as Ohio State has been called in the past, has still had a talented receiver or two in any given season, but not a whole lot of depth.

That WILL NOT be the case in 2009! So much so that at this point, even attempting to project the starters would be a complete crap shoot.

Ray Small, Dane Sanzenbacher, Taurian Washington, DeVier Posey and Lamaar Thomas headline the list of returning veteran receivers. It has also been rumored that Brandon Saine may be moving to wideout.

WR/TE Jake Stoneburner will join the team in 2009 after red-shirting his freshman year, along with new recruits Duron Carter, James Jackson, Chris Fields, and dual-threat Corey Brown. Brown was a two-way star in H.S. who may potentially play both WR and CB for the Buckeyes.

Depth is not an issue here. Who will get the nod as #1, 2 and 3 WRs this year? But I think Dane and Ray for sure, the rest is up for grabs

Starting lineup is great, but I would love to see plenty more rotation this time through. I thought Posey should have seen a field a bit more last year, but hey..

I'm excited though - depth is great.

Agreed, lots of talent and unless someone proves they should never leave the field, get a rotation. I wanted to see more Thomas and Posey but it will be interesting to see how WR shakes out. I think Dane will be on the field plenty though.

Dane will play consistently and Ray Small will have to decide if he'd like to as well. I'd say Posey in the top three easy and possibly could go into the starting two. Lots of people behind those three that could all get action at least early on.

Just speculation here, and it may have been said elsewhere, but here goes...JT's MO since his arrival at OSU has been that punters hold for place kickers to create unity among the special teams packages. This season, it's to be assumed that Thoma will hold for Pettrey on the first team. Since Buchanon is the de facto 2nd team PK and P, and the only other kicker on the roster is a walk on (Barclay) and not guaranteed to be on the fall roster, it makes sense to tab another player as 2nd team holder for the sake of continuity. Sanzo's sure hands make him a good candidate, but I suspect another factor is that he seems to be the type of guy who would run thru a brick wall if it would help the team. If running fakes were a consideration, I would think Flash to be the obvious choice (not that Sanzo is slow). Considering the amount of dedication that Sanzo has shown since day one, it seems logical to me that he got the nod because the coaches believe he will take the job just as seriously as his WR duties.

Good point on the PK/punter combos - they like to have that setup partly because it makes it simpler to arrange practice sessions. I think it's likely that Barclay will be 'on the fall roster'; but I'll speculate that you really meant that JT would want both PK/holder combos to be guys that will make the 70-man travel squad.

Catching the football comes from other aspects of the game. I wonder if there's another motive? Catch it and run a fake? Pass it on a fake? The vest has a reason other than his "sure hands".

Part of the reason was explained in the Ozone article...that Ben Buchanon is partially handling multiple duties at the moment, we are using one less person in the rotation because of "The Chanon's" multiple talents. So, since we don't have the extra punter or kicker, Dane is filling in. Having said that, there could be other reasons as well. It's all good stuff though.

Edit, general alluded to what I was saying...beat me to it.

Thanks, that is what I meant, even if I didn't know it at the time. I had forgotten that even though rosters are trimmed to 105 in the fall, walk-ons are allowed back on the roster after cuts (at least, I think that's the way it works). The traveling squad is the important factor. While Barclay may stand a good chance of being on the team for the season, Sanzo is a lock for the travel roster, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Also, I do think that non-scholie players are a bit more of an uncertainy. Take a hypothetical example of a life altering experience (family crisis, fatherhood, eg), a scholie player with NFL prospects would be more likely to stay with the team, whereas a walk-on may choose to move on. But that's more speculation.
