WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Ohio State junior has seniority
Sanzenbacher veteran of OSU receivers

Dane Sanzenbacher will be a junior in the fall but has already played in 24 games for Ohio State. His first reception was for a touchdown.

COLUMBUS - When the Ohio State receivers got together for their first spring meeting with position coach Darrell Hazell, they instinctively lined up by seniority, with the youngest players in the back of the group.

It was at that moment Dane Sanzenbacher realized that if the group had a couple of gray beards, one of them was him. After just two seasons with Ohio State on his resume, the former City League star was now one of the Golden Buckeye card holders in the unit.

"I looked around, and I was one of the guys sitting at the front of the table," Sanzenbacher said. "I knew coming in that we'd lost a couple of veterans, and we got a lot younger as a group, but it kind of hits you at that instant. You're now one of the leaders."

Sanzenbacher, who will be a junior in the fall, has played in 24 games for the Buckeyes. Among the receivers, only senior Ray Small has been around longer. But injuries and a couple of stints in the doghouse have limited Small's impact.

Sanzenbacher was in Ohio State's top three receiver rotation last year, with senior Brian Robiskie and junior Brian Hartline. Robiskie's OSU career is over and he is headed to the NFL. Hartline opted to leave the Buckeyes a year early to enter the draft.

That left Sanzenbacher sitting in the first chair.
"I like having that responsibility," Sanzenbacher said. "It kind of came on fast, but I like being the person that guys will come to with questions. It puts more responsibility on me, and that will only make everyone better in the long run."

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said he is comfortable with Sanzenbacher providing direction.

"Dane is evolving into one of the leaders, and he's a great one to show guys how it's done by setting an example," Tressel said. "He has the work ethic and the dedication to getting better every day - the things you want to see passed along to the new guys. I expect Dane to lead like a veteran, and that's what he'll do."

"We've got some bad boys," Pryor said. "We have some players that can catch a three or four-yard pass and take it to the house. Ray, Dane, Lamaar, T-Wash, DeVier - we've got some players here, and I think a lot of people will be shocked."

Go get em young WRs. Bad Boys whatca gonna do?

IMO the pieces are there. IMO we have more speed and athleticism. There are 2 players that need to step up.

Ray Small...I have heard nothing but good things about him this spring. He may have been woken up. This is his last Rodeo in college and if he slacks he won't be drafted. The kid has AA potential. If he comes to play this year he could help us out alot.

The other is Taurian Washington he has the ability to be a stud as well. If he can tear it up we will be in good shape.

I am excited about the potential of James Jackson and Corey Brown as well. When Brown caught that acrobatic TD in the AAA I jumped out of my chair and my jaw hit the ground.

We are gonna get alot of single coverage on the WR's because of TP...we need to exploit that.

That depends on what you mean by "single coverage".

To contain a QB that can score from anywhere on the field when he scrambles, you don't play man-to-man; you play zone. In man-to-man your DB's can get caught with their back to the quarterback as he runs by them. Your less susceptible to that in zone.

For a freshman, Terrelle was amazing at keeping his eyes downfield when he started to run. When defenses react to TP making a move toward that LOS, a guy that can find the resulting weak spot in the zone would be incredibly valuable. We need a guy who can burn a defense when they get caught "looking into the backfield".

Dane Sanzenbacher is that guy.

Caucasian Sensation!!

Position Outlook: Wide Receiver - We Will Always Have Tempe

Dane Sanzenbacher - Caucasian Sensation

There are various things I could say about Dane Sanzenbacher that would be code words or terms for the fact that he is, in fact, of a lighter hue than the "typical" wide receiver. "Gritty, tough, got a real lunch-pail mindset, coach's son" - any of these terms are used by sports broadcasters to describe white dudes and you won't be seeing them in the ensuing paragraphs. Here's what Dane Sanzenbacher is: skinny, shifty, athletic, and okay, I relent: tough. You can't avoid the last bit because chances are good some of your best memories of Dane Sanzenbacher from last season are various instances of him getting rocked by players from USC, Illinois, and especially Wisconsin. What's remarkable is that he basically bounced right back up from these hits that would break yours truly into two pieces. Nevertheless, Dane Sanzenbacher will end up being just as vital to the passing game's evolution as his darker-hued teammates.

A few sessions at Electric Beach and Sanzo will be all set.

I like the idea of Dane, Ray, Posey, TWash, Flash, and others dressed in scarlet and gray, and all will be making great catches from TP. The skin tone doesn't matter to me as long as the ball keeps advancing down the field.

Re-watching some of last seasons games it was pretty obvious we had guys open most of the time with TP in there....he just didn't see them.
When that changes we'll really have a dynamic offense.

He seemed to find Dane alot. It may have been his confidence in his ability to make the sure catch.

I watched the 2009 Spring game twice and I did not see any action or plays involving Dane Sanzenbacher. Of course the broadcast were over BTN and
there was only selected footage but at least he should have been on some plays. I only saw one play by Dan Herron also. Maybe i must have missed
some action. Was Dane injured during the spring practices ?

Dane sat the spring game out with a sprained ankle.

Just saw Mr Sanzo and his son will be ready to kick some USC asses back to LA and is looking forward to a productive season.

Sanzo's bravery got him leveled several times last year. Taylor Mays is not the kind of DB to play that game with.

Hopefully we will use Stoneburner to keep Mays busy so that Sanzo can stay alive.
